Grand Theft Auto: Hollywood?

360 Rumour | Rockstar might be returning to familiar ground.
A recent post from IGN has revealed the potential location for the inevitable Grand Theft Auto V. And it's probably not what you expected.

Even though the last entry to the series split fans down the middle, Rockstar answered some of the criticism by releasing The Ballad of Gay Tony. If this rumour is anything to go by, then GTA might be continuing with another glitz and glamour approach. Word of mouth suggests that the next location will be Los Angeles and in particular, Hollywood. Players familiar with the series will already know that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas featured a similar area, so maybe the high-roller lifestyle is something you enjoy? Or maybe the gritty realism of Niko's story was the zenith of Rockstar's work?

At this stage, we're looking at nothing more than a leaked rumour so keep in mind that it may never develop. According to the post, the public debut of Max Payne 3 will act as a platform for the announcement, assuming anything eventuates from all of this. Considering the huge amount of success that GTA IV had, this move is just as likely to cause another divide among fans. Let's just hope that a return to London isn't out of the question; the potential surrounding a cockney story and Rockstar's talent is enormous. Either way, leave your thoughts below.

Weren't the three cities in San Andreas already representations of the area? Just like how Liberty City is supposed to be New York.

Los Santos = Los Angeles
San Fierro = San Francisco
Los Venturas = Las Vegas

You are correct sir, that's why I said Hollywood is familiar territory.

Yeah, so it would be a game sent in a current-gen and better Vinewood and therefore Los Santos in general. Which would be pretty awesome because they could also put in a bunch of coastline fleshed out with tourist towns/attractions.

It's a great idea for people who liked San Andreas. But a lot of people didn't.

I've played every GTA and San Andreas was my least favourite. It was too big and bored the hell out of me at times. London just seems like a much better option, but we'll find out soon-ish I suppose.

Well that doesn't mean it's familiar territory. LA is a unique place and is very different to the Hollywood part. It's a bit like saying GTA: South Central is familiar territory. Or every Street Fighter game is familiar territory.

Hmm, I'm also not really sure the game "split fans down the middle". The game has one of the best critics' average for a game ever and the best ever for a PS3 game, and while some people liked the old games better, I don't know if half of people who played it out-right disliked it. Sure, many had gripes with it, but I doubt many people who love the old ones thought the new one was much different. I personally liked a lot of the stat stuff in San Andreas stuff but not everyone did.

a return to the state of san andreas is in no way a bad thing. but i have very little faith that it is true. rockstar have always been majorly tight lipped in the development of their games.

If they return to the post-IV era of story and gameplay, then it's going to be VERY familiar. I'm well aware that the actual location would be receiving a major overhaul, just like the evolution of Liberty City from GTA III. But this whole rumour suggests that Rockstar are moving back towards a Vice City-esque game, which I don't buy.

Honestly, I don't think anything will come of this. Rockstar are moving further away from that 'immature' side that they had, just look at Red Dead Redemption. Actual evidence suggests that realism is very much on the agenda. Of course they could always do a realistic story in Hollywood too, but I've always had a feeling that GTA V would be based outside of America.

That said, the last rumour was GTA: Bondi. Look how that turned out...

[EDIT]

As for splitting the fans, like I said, GTA IV was huge and brought in a whole new legion of gamers. But a LOT of people complained. I disagreed with them completely and I still think GTA IV is the best game this generation of consoles has seen, but yeah....haters gonna hate, or whatever that saying is.

Its going to need more than a change of location to reignite my interested in Grand Theft Auto, but its a start.

Call em split, the game bored the **** out of me and I've never even bothered finishing it, the driving controls were rubbish, the story dragged and the characters after you end up in the mafia all kind of blend together. If they'd kept some of the awesome characters from the beginning in the game like Little Jacob, Packie and Brucie I probably would have kept playing, but as is I just couldn't be ****.

Saints Row 2 was better.

GTA IV bored me to tears also. I can't remember all the specific reasons I hated it at the time but let's just say that I was completely underwhelmed by the whole experience after the first few hours of gameplay. I remember that I tried to trudge on through it, hoping for some GTA-goodness to arrive but it never did and after probably 10 to 15 hours of gaming, I stopped and traded the game at a local EB.

Vice City was my favourite overall and San Andreas was definitely a lot more enjoyable, for me, than GTAIV was.. I really wanted to like it.. but it just didn't have what I needed.

Blasphemy, I would NEVER say that...

GTAIV was the first one I did not finish. I agree completely with Benza.

Clearly everybody is different as I loved GTAIV, and conversely, tired of San Andreas and never finished it. My favorite to this day is still Vice City, so a return to that location would be my preference. However, I'd like to see Rockstar do something different; perhaps set it in the 1960's during the whole Communist paranoia era and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Then you could incorporate a bit of Havana into the mix. The soundtrack could be awesome and the cars would be sweeeet!

I want to see them do a current gen version of the london 1960 expac from way back.

I doubt that they would set it outside of the United States any more as the US market is too big and Americans would have difficultly understanding all those **** accents. Aw rite gunva!
It would be cool though.

Grand Theft Arizona may be? icon_smile.gif Something with some highways in it that connect two big cities.. like San Andreas kinda had, where there was all that area between the cities that you could do off-road racing etc. Would like to see a more "grand canyon" style.. but they probably will try to avoid anything that looks like Red Dead Redemption..

They need to bring back the stolen car garage miniquests and stuff like that AND make them mean something. Other than the missions, I seem to recall that anything else didn't really seem to be much use in GTAIV..

Add another to the "Found GTA4 boring" pile. I didn't like that you couldn't just pinch any cab to do taxi missions, you could only do it in Roman's taxi. It also dissapointed me that there seemed to be less distractions around the place, which have returned in force in Red Dead. It could just be that none of the side stuff they put there was fresh, but it just seemed lacking in that department, which to me, was one of the series main strengths. Also, it was too realistic. I wanna car surf, dammit!

Red Dead on the other hand... brilliant.

Seconding this, Red Dead seemed to fix up everything that I didn't like in GTA, bar one thing.

It still introduced a whole bunch of awesome characters at the beginning and then got rid of them never to hear from them again.

No RDR spoilers please!
Still plodding though it.

wouldn't really call it spoilers, but edited the post anyway, sorry dude.

I really enjoyed GTAIV, I found RDR to be terrible. I'm going to approach this with mild curiousity for now (I tried playing San Andreas but it was after completely GTAIV and it felt positively archaic).
What I'd really love in a Rockstar game is if they dropped their daytime-soap convention of repeating the plot every **** cutscene. It's pretty much the only gripe I had about RDR.

I also yearn for another GTA1-esque game show style game. Crackdown was the closest we've gotten to that this generation. And who'da thunk it, but the same designer was involved.

I thought GTA IV was good, however there wasn't as much "replay value" for me once the storyline missions were done. I went through III, Vice City and San Andreas multiple times (storyline play throughs, and causing general mayhem - giving myself tasks like seeing how long i could outrun the police etc).

Like others, my favorite in the series is Vice City (perfect location, characters and storyline), i loved the environment of San Andreas...... i hated the storyline though.
