E3 2010 Feature: Crysis 2 Preview

360 Feature | Leaving the jungle and going urban.
The original Crysis became a hit courtesy of its groundbreaking graphics engine and its immense and non-linear sandbox style gameplay. It also had a bit of RPG style elements in terms of character customisation and building. The game was similar to the Far Cry, which is no surprise since they are both developed by Crytek. Crysis is set to be a trilogy and we now look into upcoming sequel, Crysis 2. The game will be the first game ever to showcase the powerful new CryEngine 3 engine. The build we saw was running on a PC but was played using the Xbox 360 controller.

The highly customizable Nanosuit returns as the new and improved ‘Nanosuit 2’. The new suit is essentially a more streamlined version of the previous suit and will allow the usage of multiple power modes simultaneously. Gamers can use strength, increase armour strength, use stealth and use a Tactical Visor to scan for information.

Unlike the original Crysis and the Far Cry series, which took place in a jungle environment, Crysis 2 will take place in New York city, which in this game, is an urban wasteland. This new setting will provide gamers with a very different experience as the urban environments will allow for a much different gameplay style and approach. It will certainly offer more options and change the way players explore things, as they will be able to navigate buildings and interact with the city. You can do things like picking up cars and tossing them around, among other things. You could even stick grenades on cars and toss them at enemies, for much more disastrous results. The urban setting also allows for a more tactical urban stealth like experience, allow you to perform stealth kills and take cover will standing.

The sandbox gameplay form the previous game will be present but it has been evolved to a ‘Polygraph Sandbox’ style gameplay, and what that means is that Crysis 2 will be far a more cinematic gaming experience. The game will feature several dramatic and intense cinematic moments that have a strong influence on the core game, for example, there was this one moment where a couple is trying to get out from underneath a collapsing building, tension builds when they get stuck and you are forced to abandon them because otherwise you would have been crushed yourself. Gamers can expect plenty of heavy and emotional moments like this.

Among all the new adversaries we saw, we should give a special mention to the ‘Pinger’, a mech like enemy that uses sonar to detect enemies. They look a lot like the Metal Gear Walkers from Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4, and they took a lot before going down for good.

Graphically, the game looks really impressive and packs one hell of a visual and technical punch. There were a few minor hitches in the build we saw but overall, the game seems to showcase the powerful new CryEngine 3 really well and we can’t wait to see other games powered by it.

Crysis 2 looks to provide the same engaging and open world sandbox gameplay the previous game did. The new urban setting will add a whole new dimension to the way the game will be played and offer an experience unlike the original.

Looking pretty solid for a cross-platform title. I had the original at one christmas with the PC I got and it was pretty cool (but I wasn't much of a PC gamer at the time).
