That excursion funnel puzzle is crazy. I don't know how long that would take me to figure out =\

(Maybe I'm a little slow?)

can someone explain to me what the big deal is about this game? is it just because vavle make it and they make half life so omg its amazing or was the first one really that good? I mean its winning best game of e3 etc? To me that's a joke cause its a short puzzle game and its up against zelda, gears, killzone, fable, halo, dk, kirby, infamous, rage etc.

Should i play portal one? is it going to change my mind or am i going to be confused about why anyone would look twice at this?

Because Portal has absolutely phenomenal gameplay, creativity, art, writing, and pacing, which is no surprise coming from Valve. Its very short, but wholly memorable and unique.

To say its a joke "cause its a short puzzle game" doesn't make much sense, as its more than a puzzle game, and Portal 2 is a full lengthed game, not a short product. Plus, with that view, we could easily say Killzone 3 is "Just another arcade shooter", Zelda is "Just another Zelda game", and Gears is "Just another third person shooter".

In short, the first one really was 'that good'.

i marvel at the day they make a self release Valve.

good to know. Well i recently got braid and im really liking that, but I heard portal 2 would be twice as long with a different co-op mode. Twice as long should not be a full game if that's the case, but I may be mistaken. I mentioned killzone etc so I didn't sound bias, but for portal to get more excitement than zelda to me personally is crazy. Again my opinion, but ill pick up orange box for 20 bucks and give it a whirl

Considering the first game came with the Orange Box and was Packaged with TF2 and all of HL2, it's length/price ratio isn't really an issue.
I don't imagine Portal 2 will be charged at full game price and fingers crossed Valve will pull another shifty and release it with EP3!

Na, I agree with you!
But knowing Valve they will have designed the game so by the time you come across this puzzle you be fluent in the art of excursion funnels.

Anyway, the graphics are looking better too!
Really pumped for this!

portal was minimalist gameplay perfection. it has very few mechanics to master but what it does have is done perfectly. you should definitely play it. it's doesn't have all the flashing lights like some of the games you've mentioned but it's not trying to. it's kind of like comparing a movie like ' the shining' to 'scream'. well at least that's my take on it.

Play, then give us your opinion.

Most of us have played the original and understand why there's more hype than Zelda. Portal was a breath of fresh air =P

I'm gonna chuck in my two cents here as well.

Portal (the first) was just a phenomenal game. Sure, it only lasted a few hours, but finally finishing off those last few puzzles was really rewarding for me. I'm not a huge Valve fan, I really didn't enjoy HL2, but Portal was brilliant with it's humour and very clever puzzle design. The story isn't half bad, either.

The thing is, Half Life 2 wasn't that good.
By the time Portal came out, it was just a passable FPS.
Portal turned convention on its head and produced something truly brilliant without being arty-farty. That's why it's still a favourite 3 years on, and an even better version of it will be orgasmic.

thanks guys im convince ill be playing it for sure and hopefully i find it as brilliant as you all do icon_smile.gif

I actually bought the Orange Box on Steam for a mate for his birthday recently. He'd never played Portal or TF2 before which I found shocking and thought had better remedy.
He finished Portal quickly and was amazed how good it was. One of the best games he'd ever played. And to play through now with all the teasers of Portal 2 all over the place.... Exciting stuff.
I guess my point is; you've got to play it, to understand how good it is.

Half Life 2 was cutting edge and a brilliant game back in 2004 when it was released. But yes when Portal was released - three years later in 2007 - HL2 was merely average compared to other FPS games.

Half-Life 2 is AMAZING dammit.I played it through for the first time in 2007...great game, easily the best plot development and atmosphere of any FPS. The world is also really great, the score aswell. Halo 1 is the only game that compares favourably in the genre imo. BTW...played that game, Halo CE, for the first time in years this week...it's still owns most modern FPS games sadly. Portal 1 was so clever and just a nice game overall...the sequel, with more epic story and co-op etc should be really good i reckon.

I'm currently running on no sleep for like 24 hours.

Someone...anyone..did I just really read 'average' and 'HL2' in the same sentence? Or am I hallucinating?

I'm hopefully hallucinating. I mean..I hope I'm hallucinating.

Like...oh my God. What? HL2 essentially pioneered physics based puzzles in FPS. It also kinda sorta takes a massive dump on 95% of FPS games on the market now. That and find me an FPS that does facial animation better.

Oh come on... I was comparing Half Life 2 (2004) to 2007's games.

That comparison includes:
- HL2 episodes
- TF2
- Portal
- Bioshock
- The Darkness
- Several Call of Duties
- Crysis
- Unreal Tournament 3

2007 was a good year for shooters

I never really liked most of the physics puzzles in HL2. They were rudimentary levers and flotation mechanics that you learnt back in primary school. Plus it was frustrating to try and position the objects so the effect took place. The Eps 1 and 2 had much better puzzles.

Bah! I still believe Half-Life 2 is one of the best games ever made, and design wise beats the living out of a vast majority of shooters released since.

Every single little thing in HL2 feels totally deliberate and unique. No pointless corridor running. No copy/paste levels. Each level feels like a wholely contained unique game on its own, and the game never stops delivering something fresh and new right up until the credits roll.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to wash my fanboy goggles.

I think it is better than all of those games (except I haven't played or heard of The Darkness) and I haven't played another FPS game that is really anywhere near as good in quality... HL2 episode 2 could have been the best if it wasn't so short, which is the problem with episodes really I think because they can't stand up on their own!

I think Half Life 2 and its episodes still have all fps games beat in terms of level art and character design, variety and just plain simple fun that doesn't age. Everything about it is just polished to a shine and although I love Portal too I think the Half life series is better. Alyx is still my favorite game character ever too <3

Are you sure you're not confusing HL2 with the Episodes? I remember a few too many corridors in the citadel and abandoned residential areas.

Anyway... I was trying to argue against Esposch's point and now you guys have turned me around =(
