F.3.A.R is set to be an asymmetric co-op title starring the Point Man himself and a ghost named Fettel. They both hate each other but are working together in an odd buddy-cop style pairing, much like how Master Chief and the Arbiter unwillingly teamed up in the Halo series. The game itself is set to take place 9 months after the events of F.E.A.R and F.E.A.R 2. Alma, who has been the most mysterious and important figure in this series, is now pregnant and is about to give birth to some horrible and unknown monstrosity.
In terms of gameplay, fans can expect some nifty upgrades and changes. The AI, for example, is now much smarter and unpredictable, behaving differently each time you play. Players will never know what to expect from the enemy and where they may be lying in wait. Also, there will be extensive use of mechs and exo suits, so expect plenty of explosive action in addition to the usual horror. Speaking of horror, scares in the game will be more in the form of ‘surprises’. In other words, you will be getting shocks because of a false sense of security, getting around a corner and thinking that everything is okay, when in fact they almost never are.
We also mentioned earlier that the game would be a co-op shooting fest. In F.3.A.R, each character will offer a vastly different play style. For example, Fettel can take over bodies and see things that the Point Man can’t. This interesting new co-op angle will be available in 2 player split screen form.
The stage demonstrated to us was a village level, and right from the start, things were chaotic and explosive. The action was also relentless and frenetic throughout. The demonstration didn’t seem linear, as we were never quite sure where to go and what to do. Flashback sequences also came thick and fast, making the whole experience very exhilarating and intense. It really was one crazy urban fire fight.
F.3.A.R is shaping up to be another solid entry for the franchise. We like the idea of a co-op game and the split screen option should be very satisfying. The action, intensity and pacing the shooter is going to provide could make this one a potential classic.
