Halo: Reach details emerge

360 News | Return of the Spartans.
February’s Game Informer has let the cat out of the bag. Or the Convenant out of the spaceship. Or something. Either way, we’ve got a whole new set of details regarding the upcoming Bungie (apparent) opus, Halo: Reach. As most players would know by now, this game is a prequel to the original Halo and will have you returning to play as a Spartan, just like Master Chief, after the brief foray as the ODST.

To be more specific, you’ll be part of a six-person squad known as ‘Noble 6’, made up of mostly ‘Spartan III’ warriors, considered by the UNSC to be expendable. Each squad member will have unique traits, while one is female. Played on the planet Reach, the environment’s darker colour palette and new native cultures are meant to be crucial to the story. Bungie is trying to make the Covenant a scarier foe by portraying them as much more brutal and with them speaking in their own language in “deep and creepy voices”. Apparently, battles will now be fought with up to 40 AI characters and 20 vehicles, as opposed to the 20 AI characters in Halo 3.

Some original Halo features will return, including a non-replenishing health bar as well as the sniper rifle, assault rifle, magnum, plasma pistol, sword, and needler. However, spike and flame grenades have been removed in favour of frag and plasma grenades. New weapons include the designated marksman rifle, which is something of a mix between a sniper and a battle rifle, and the needle rifle, which is a medium range gun that will cause three people to explode if they're hit in succession. Context sensitive melee assassinations will also be possible for the first time. The game will have enhanced armour abilities where you can choose a super-up ability, such as sprint or camouflage, and use them until a rechargeable meter runs out.

While there is not too much known about the coveted multiplayer, Game Informer has confirmed that Halo: Reach will at least have all the multiplayer features that were in Halo 3. Apparently, the armour abilities will play some sort of role as well. Finally, there is one new enemy known as the Skirmisher, which are similar to Jackals and travel in packs.

No release date is available yet, but we expect to see Halo: Reach sometime in 2010. But until then, we’ll bring you all the Halo information that you need as it becomes available to us.

Halo meets Crysis.

Actually I think that 'Choose your super-up ability' suits this game because there are many Spartans this time round, and in the book the spartans did have a diversity as to who was good at what.

Kelly could run, Linda could snipe, Sam was strong, John is only lucky and a good leader.

So this kind of adds to the feeling of their being more then just one Spartan imo.

Bet those are gonna be the perks of multiplayer

Ah, sounds like those leaked screenshots were real then, with the descriptions of those weapons. Can't wait for the game, should be sweet.

"Maximum Copy"

Interested to see what they do with halo: reach in general though. Hopefully it isn't just Halo 3 with squad stuff and actually has some different gameplay mechanics that push it away from standard shooter fare. I do like the sound of the super-up abilities, even though it does sound like a very blatant rip off of the Nanosuit from Crysis icon_razz.gif (which isn't a bag out, the Nanosuit is what made Crysis so incredibly fun to play).

That is encouraging news. I always thought all Halo needed was to take itself more seriously.

I haven't read the book(s), I apologise. But wouldn't that be just based on they're physical attributes as a human, and not applied to the armour?

Na thats ok and yeah you are right, it is their physical attributes. However these Spartan III's may have had special armour which were unique in their power-ups. The books don't actually have anything about Spartan III's, only Spartan II's. So I'm not quite sure what these guys armor is capable of. It might not even be an MJOLNIR suit their wearing. icon_confused.gif

I'm just of the opinion that this ability to choose a particular power-up does give the sense that these Spartans aren't just robots, and that they have their personal traits, much like the Spartan II's in the Fall of Reach.

Either way I'm kind of excited for this, which is good cause I'm not even slightly interested in ODST :)

So lemme get this straight, me not being the avid Halo series afficianado the spartan ranks go from III = meh , to II = better to a I series = pwnsauce?

Do I have to wait for halo 4 to be able to use the supersoldier?

The way I see it Spartan II's are the advanced versions of Spartan I's, who were apparently very expensive and ineffective (According to the references made in the books) however Spartan III's sound like they are a cheaper versions of the Spartan II's.

So in order of awesomeness imo it goes II>III>I

I wouldn't mind betting that Spartan III's are just trained warriors given a suit, as opposed to the bio-genetically enhanced Spartan II's that were kidnapped and trained to be warriors from a near-kindergarden age. I could be wrong though, I'll have to read that magazine article when I can be bothered =]

I just hope they actually feel empowering to use. The problem I have with all Halo games is that regardless of you being a bio-engineered super soldier with super human reflex and training, you still feel ordinary as all ****.

I'd like to see a Halo game run at 60 FPS.

Rawr, Ghosts of Onyx revolves all around the Spartan-IIIs.
You're right, III's are cheaper versions of II's, and as the article states, were expendable. They more or less got the same augmentations as the II's, despite not being the most genetically 'perfect' human specimens, and were fitted with some not-as-great armour.
How they try meld with the book, or whether or not they decide to take some creative liberties just to make it fun is anyone's guess, I suppose.

Bish has it.
I'm a little confused, it's been a while since I've read the books, but I never knew that Spartan III's were on reach, I had always thought you would be playing as the Spartan II's that we're defending Reach.

Also I'd like to find out someday where Master Chief end up after Halo 3.

But then it would need something else to be bad, textures, effects, animations etc. I would rather all the animations, effects and textures to be good and run at 30 FPS.
Or, you know, they could actually pull their fingers out of their ********* and keep the textures/effects/animations the same and have it running at 60 frames.

The Spartan Is were failures, effectively testbeds for the highly successful Spartan IIs. These two projects were backed by a female Doctor who will no doubt make an appearance in Reach's story.

Spartan IIIs were made by one of the main opponents of the Spartan I & II program. Corners were cut wherever possible in order to make them expendable, kamikaze-like super soldiers. These were physically similar to the Spartan IIs but just had psychological disorders. The unique abilities would no doubt be tied to their genetic traits as opposed to the armour.

Multiplayer sounds as if the skins introduced in Halo 3's multiplayer will now have an effect on gameplay as opposed to just being an ego thing.

^ i always thought that the "Spartan I's" were the original Spartans of Greece, 300-style, and that the Spartan II program got it's name from the fact that these were born and raised soldiers, rather than recruits, and therefore in a similar manner, 1 Spartan warrior was worth xx regular soldiers.

and then the Spartan III's are basically mass produced Spartan IIs.

They can't just magically make the 360 do more than it is able to.

Halo 3 didn't exactly push the system graphically, it failed at producing 60 frames, other games have managed it (Bayonetta seems to be one such title), why not the Halo franchise?
Probably because they would rather get everything else better in Reach, rather than make it look like Halo 3 at 60 FPS.

If we're gonna get technical..

Halo 3 was quite a mess when it came down to it. Sup-720p resolution with no AA, but rock solid 30fps and using a layered HDR setup for lighting. Sure they got it smooth, but it looked pretty terrible as well (aesthetics are good though). On the other hand as Sin has said, Bayonetta dons 60fps, 2xAA, 720p, and great texture work.

It comes down to Bungies inability to learn hardware imo. They didn't do anything to make ODST look better, so hopefully they'll finally deliver what Halo should have, which is awesome visual fidelity.

Personally I want to see better animation. I really, REALLY hated the animation setups in Halo 3 and ODST, they didn't feel believable at all, and felt more robotic than anything. Here's hoping Bungie l2make an engine.
