Aliens Vs. Predator faces extinction in Australia

360 News | As the OFLC slaps on another RC. UPDATE: Report now available.
According to IGN and games.on.net, another title has fallen foul of the Office of Film and Literature Classification. The upcoming franchise revival and first person shooter, Alien Vs. Predator is the latest title to succumb to the rigidities of Australia's classification system, as it has been refused classification. At the time of writing, the reasons for this decision have not been made available yet, but the decision has indeed been been made.

SEGA Australia PR manager, Vispi Bhopti, issued the following official statement, "SEGA Australia can today confirm that the initial submission of Aliens vs Predator has been Refused Classification by the Classification Operations Board of Australia. We will continue to investigate all options available to us, including the possibility of appeal".

Aliens Vs. Predators is the latest in an increasingly long line of high profile titles to be refused classification in Australia in recent years. The last title, Left 4 Dead 2 was eventually released in a heavily edited form. Our review will be up in the near future. Given that Aliens Vs. Predator is fondly remembered by long time PC gamers, here's to hoping that it doesn't meet the same fate.

UPDATE: Ausgamers has made the full report over the RC decision available for viewing. To summarise it for you, it's apparently too violent.

Predator was originally released with an R rating. I'm quite sure the M rated version has some minor changes, but I lack a copy of the original R release to compare.

Predator 2's theatrical release was rated M. The video release restored footage and got an R rating. The same R rated video release now fetches an MA on video.
I saw predator in the cinema the day it came out, it has never been rated R as far as i know as i would have been around 14 at the time.

I vote that this comment should be a news article in itself. Sublime.

As of the 18th of December, Sega have successfully won the bid on the classification of the game in Australia. "It is with great pleasure that we announce the success of our appeal," says Darren Macbeth, managing drector of Sega Australia. "We are particularly proud that the game will be released in its original entirety, with no content altered or removed whatsoever. This is a big win for Australian gamers. We applaud the Classification Review Board on making a decision that clearly considers the context of the game, and is in line with the modern expectations of reasonable Australians."
