Australian GoD pricing revealed

360 News | Microsoft's Games on Demand service has a strange pricing structure.
While the it doesn't go live in Australia until 12 August, prices for titles on the Xbox 360's Games on Demand service have started to appear on the Xbox Live Marketplace for those fortunate enough to be previewing the new dashboard upgrade.

For whatever reason, prices are not uniform across the world with, unfortunately, Australian and New Zealand customers paying a hefty premium on several games. If the current prices on the Marketplace are anything to go by, here's what we can expect to be paying if we want to use the service on Wednesday.
  • Viva Piñata - 1800 MSP / AUD $29.95 (1600 MSP for US)
  • BioShock - 3000 MSP / AUD $49.95 (2400 MSP for US)
  • Call of Duty 2 - 3000 MSP / AUD $49.95 (2400 MSP for US, 4400 MSP for NZ)
  • The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - 3000 MSP / AUD $49.95 (2400 MSP for US)
  • Mass Effect - 6000 MSP / AUD $99.95 (1500 MSP for US)
So far, prices for the other Games on Demand available on 12 August - Kameo: Elements of Power, Prey, Perfect Dark Zero, Table Tennis and Viva Piñata 2: Trouble in Paradise - have yet to surface.

Keep in mind that these prices aren't official as of yet, and could change before the service goes live. For a current list of pricing for all games across the globe, head to NeoGAF.

Steam = Epic Win
Games on Demand = Epic Fail
PSP Go = likely to follow in M$'s footsteps

Seriously, you can pick up a 2nd hand copy of Mass Effect for $20, brand new you can get cheap as well. M$ sure knows how to keep its head shoved up its ***. I really hope this bombs, to be successful at this you need to show incentive for the consumer. This just shows incentive for publishers: Digital Restrictions Management and desperately trying to rip off the consumer of every last possible cent.

Epic fail M$, epic epic fail!

I'm sorry, but when did Australia being ripped off for games become news?

1500ms points for ME is fair, 6000 is WTF!?

What the hell do they loose?

They get more of the money back because it saves shipping
No case , manual OR DISC!
And they dont need to expand to let people download this.

This makes no sense at all, i think Games on demand should only include games 1 year old or older and have a Max cost of 2000ms points

The reason why we are paying 6000 MS Points is because over here Mass Effect still has a RRP of $99.95 Whereas over in the US and those other countries Mass Effect has been released as a classics title.

Still annoying as all hell but it's at the very least something somewhat legitimate.

Terrible. What could be a useful solution for getting cheap games is now not even an option for me.

Paying $100 for a game nowadays is madness if you know where to go. Getting a digital copy for $100 is even worse. At least with a *real* copy you can sell it or trade it. $30 for Viva Pinata is bordering insanity as well. You can pick up copies of this in any dumpster.

That's my concern for digital only. At least with retail there is a medium for competition.

^^^^ Also the chance for clearance stock is gone.

This is really bad. What are microsoft thinking this might work for america, europe and asia but not for us bcus of the prices for these games when i can just simply go down to my local EB store and buy mass effect for $60-$80 this is Bull.

I have only 10gb download each month so i dont think i will gat any 360 games on the market place anytime soon icon_sad.gif

Some of these prices are absolutely ridiculous and doesn't give me much hope at all for the PSP Go.
Maybe I've missed something, but when did Sony become a division of Microsoft?

This is all EB's fault, sif pressure companies to charge full retail for the digital distributions icon_sad.gif

Ridiculous pricing means nobody uses the service giving xbox australia an excuse to not bother continuing the service. lazy good for nothing... update the bloody contest page.....

I saw that and nearly vomited.

The Domayne down the road has copies of Mass Effect for $30, I saw a copy of Bioshock for $20 at Dick Smith.

It will be interesting to see sales figures for GoD, because I don't think Aussie gamers are as misinformed as MS would hope.

Erm, you can already play Xbox games off the HDD... so how is this an improvement.

Paid $20 for Mass Effect, Bioshock is about $40 everywhere I've seen it. These prices have to come down, but I hate to say it, a lot of gamers won't know any better and will buy games on impulse using this service. I can only see this being of benefit to people living too far from retails outlets to regularly buy games. And they probably don't have good enough internet to take advantage of the service.

All they need to do now is either release a 500GB drive or allow third party HDD's. I've filled 80GB of a 120GB drive, they start going digital downloads (as well as HD movies and tv shows) they HAVE to start giving us more room to play with.

I seem to remember rumours of a much larger HDD not long ago, though they were just that - rumours. Being able to plug a 3rd party HDD in would be sweet, but I can't see it happening, at least not officially. Now if somebody would create a hack like the Wii USB loader, I would be tempted, as it is awesome having all of my games loaded onto a HDD. Though you probably get permabanned from Xbox live for your efforts.

I wouldn't buy Cod4 for 50 nevermind 2, and don't get me started on $100 Mass Effect

I asked a mate of mine to check what price he could get the 120gig HDD for me (his company is about to start stocking x360 games and hardware), but he said that it had been discontinued.
Fingers x'd that this means there will be a larger drive (at a reasonable price --> mind you looking at these GoD prices methinks we're doomed!) or 3rd party HDD support.
