There was something about the original Devil May Cry game that was truly exceptional at the time and the sequels that came later expanded on the concept that Hideki Kamiya had laid down. While Devil May Cry 3 and Devil May Cry 4 were really good games, they never made the same impact as the original.
Games like Ninja Gaiden and God of War soon came along and introduced a different style of action but many gamers still craved an evolution of the stylised action that the original Devil May Cry introduced. Bayonetta is an upcoming Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 action game by Sega and Platinum games with none other than the talented Hideki Kamiya as the game’s director. It is perhaps because of his involvement alone that the game has sparked quite an interest in the gaming press. So far the reception has been quite positive and many are looking forward to it’s worldwide release in September.
Based on the trailers we have seen so far, the game apparently tells the story of a British woman named Bayonetta, a witch who battles evil angel-like creatures with her magical shape-shifting hair and a wide range of guns and melee weapons. The recent trailer that offered a glimpse of her daughter, also showed off her rival Jeanne and a few other characters we don’t know much about at this point.
During battle mode, Bayonetta’s hair covers her entire body as her main piece of clothing and apart from the weapons she holds in her hands she even has fire arms attached to her boots, which was something that gamers found very odd in the first teaser trailer of the game. Her hair is able to shape shift into powerful creatures and weapons, which as we have seen in the screens and trailers, can really be quite devastating. Of course no game with a beautiful female protagonist would be complete without a little fan service. The more of her hair she uses to create these powerful creatures/weapons, the less of it remains on her body and that will give some gamers a reason other than to inflict some serious damage on bosses to pull off some truly devastating hair attacks.
To call the gameplay style a mere Devil May Cry clone would be an insult to the effort Hideki Kamiya is putting into this very fresh and charming action game. Outrageous character designs, magic hair and wacky premise aside, Bayonetta looks to have some great gameplay to boot. The media for this game has so far showcased an insane variety of attacks and the chain combo system looks to be very dynamic and varied. Some of these attacks look plain ridiculous but the amount of possibilities will surely impress Devil May Cry fans. Mixing up several weapons and magic attacks together while also pulling off some finishing moves makes Bayonetta look that much more attractive.
There even seems to be quite a bit of platforming and adventuring. Bayonetta can perform some really cool maneuvers, much like in other action games that require a bit of platforming. The adventuring elements along with the immense variety in the battles alone will surely give the game plenty of variety and save it from the repetition trap that most action games fall into.
Visually the game looks quite nice so far, Bayonetta herself is already gaining a fan base and that comes to no surprise as she has a very cool design, along with a witty and humorous personality. Even the creature designs are pretty cool from what we have seen so far. Technically, the game looks stunning with plenty of detail and impressive effects, along with a good variety of enemies and action on screen. So far the animations look nice and smooth especially when Bayonetta effortlessly creates those behemoth creatures with her hair.
We are certainly looking forward to this stylish action game and whether you are a Devil May Cry fan, a Hideki Kamiya fan or simply in love with the protagonist, come this September Bayonetta looks to provide gamers with a very entertaining and explosive action experience.
