No new Xbox coming, says Microsoft

360 News | Natal will work fine with existing hardware.
Microsoft executive Aaron Greenberg has dismissed rumours that a new Xbox console could see the light of day in 2010. The rumour surfaced over the weekend, suggesting that an updated console could be released to take advantage of Project Natal.

"I think part of the excitement about this announcement is that in many ways we are delivering a next generation experience this generation," Greenberg told Eurogamer. "With that said, I can confirm that Natal will run on Xbox 360 so no new console investment will be necessary."

Another unnamed source also shot down the rumour.

"Don't believe nonsense on the internet is all I'll say. We'll do the right thing for Natal."

Thank god for that, here i was wondering how many of us had recently bought x box's that are now obsolete, no such problem now. Having said that, still does not rule out a slightly update 360, just not a new generation. All in all, it makes sense given the announcements made at E3

As if they'd need new hardware to run it, it's just a glorified eyetoy

^You try programming that computer vision code. Trust me, it ain't anywhere close to "easy" or "glorified".

Can't stand fools who judge hardware before it's released. Personally, I'm sick of keyboards and mice, these interfaces are in desperate need of an overhaul, and even if Natal fails, it's still pioneered a new way of control, and it already has my blessing for that alone.

But then you're missing the whole point of this 'Internet' business.

The mouse and keyboard is the most precise control system available and your complaining about it? I sure hope developers don't start using it for hardcore games and leave it to the casual audience

^Best available? Yes.

Best possible? Doubtful. Main trouble with control systems like Natal is that they are really, really hard to implement, so no-one really has a successful one to judge. But voice recognition, speech transliteration, and physical awareness are all very powerful tools to endow upon a computer. Many people will argue that the keyboard alone is far more efficient than K+M, or that the mouse trumps the keyboard for ease of use. Ultimately, it just goes to show that the best control scheme is the one that uses paradigms we're used to.

Did you see the news a couple of months ago about using MRI to control a robotic hand? That'll be the next big thing after this big thing.

Today, I can tell you that I have obtained the first details on the next Xbox (info that we'll reveal in the coming weeks) and that's why we can confirm that the rumor reported by 1UP is false. Microsoft is NOT launching a new, upgraded Xbox 360 disguised as a new Xbox in 2010 (although built-in Natal technology is a possibility for a new edition of the Xbox 360, similar to the Elite or Arcade flavors).

It's not our intention to tease you, but for now the only thing I'm going to say about everything I heard regarding the next Xbox is that it won't launch until a certain type of television becomes more widespread because... (be sure to check out our Twitter account to learn more)
and later ...

So much for the next round of consoles not being majorly updated. This would be hella expensive. But then, everything seems expensive when it's developed these days.

Yay, so for the next XBox people have to buy ANOTHER TV to get the most out of it, massive fail much? It's all well and good to buy a 700 dollar console but when you're adding a 3000 dollar tv (or more) to that you're suddenly spending a lot of money.

Oh snap. Stereoscopic 3D in the next xbox, that's pretty big news, if unconfirmed. I'm sure people are gonna scoff when they hear about this, but maybe this will become as common as Wiis in a decade or so.

No thanks I had to splash out for a new tv for this generation. If I have to buy another tv to take advantage of the next gen consoles ill strongly consider going back to PC gaming as it will probably end up being the cheaper of the two.

Keep in mind, while it will be designed for use with these tvs, surely your current tv will still work with it. I think the point they are making is, they will wait until those tvs are not just released, but becoming mainstream if they really want to focus on that feature.
