E3 2009: Assassin's Creed II Preview

360 Feature | Back into the Animus we go.
For reasons completely unknown to us, Assassin’s Creed became a scratching post where numerous critics decided to vent some bottled up yet completely irrational anger. Still, the hype train had already left the station and the game went on to become one of the best selling new IPs of the current generation. While we didn’t buy into too much of the game’s so-called flaws, we admit that there were things that could have been done better. As if on queue, Assassin’s Creed II is due for release on November 17th, almost two years to the day after the original's monumental opening.

Now that the whole sci-fi twist and general back story is out of the way, Assassin’s Creed II is looking to focus on what the first game did best, providing an open yet focused role as an assassin. The story this time around is a little different. We know so far that players will take the role of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, a young nobleman who is not part of the 'Assassins’ to begin with. Fuelled by revenge after the betrayal of his family, Ezio enlists the help of others, including Leonardo Da Vinci, to learn how to become an Assassin.

Set during the Renaissance period in history, Assassin’s Creed II takes place in 15th Century Italy. During this time, Italy wasn’t so much a country as it was a bunch of regions and cities controlled by powerful families. Ezio is going to take up his gripes with a number of these families. From what we know so far, the cities of Florence and Venice will feature prominently in the game.

The vastly adaptable free-running mechanics will make a return, although Ezio will now have one up on Altair with the ability to swim, use boats, and later gaining the ability to fly. The structure of the game promises to be more open-ended, with players having the choice of when they want to do the missions. These missions have also disposed of the need to gather three pieces of intel and liaise with the handler. The developers are hoping that these additions and more will allow the players to truly play the game in whatever manner they choose.

To further immerse the players in the environment, the developers have tried to add an extra level to the dynamics of the crowd and random occurrences. Ezio will also have access to a range of new weapons, most notably, the double hidden blades. We quite enjoyed the combat in the first edition, and it seems the focus this time around will be on using the enemies weapons against them, as well as fighting a variety of enemies at once. PlayStation 3 owners will have even more weapons at their disposal, if they connect with the upcoming PSP version, as we reported recently.

It seems that the Renaissance was a much more colourful time than the 12th Century, so the drab environments of Jerusalem and Acre have been replaced by the more lavish and colourful surrounds of a vibrant Venice. Several animations and other adjustments have been added to the graphics, which hopefully will have the right amount of polish this time around. Furthermore, the developers are looking to have a ‘relevant’ overworld to the game that is actually worth spending time in.

Assassin’s Creed II probably isn’t going to do too much different to its predecessor, but a number of the areas that were previously criticised have been taken on board and considered by Ubisoft. The result will hopefully be a product that will be even better than the original, but one that may not be as fresh. Still, we’re very excited to be taking the next trip into the Animus and we’re really hoping to find out, just what is this Piece of Eden that everyone wants?

While you wait, why not check out the E3 trailer?

That video is pretty damned good as a show off for the context of the game. Certainly makes me wanna hurry up and finish the first one in time for its release.

Been waiting aaaages for this one.
I've put in easily over 80 hours on the first AC.
Not being as fresh as the original is fine. This is one game where sticking rather close to the original is a good thing

Bring it onnnnnn

I finished the first one then went back to play and all i could do was walk around the room and look at all hte trippy sh*it that was written on the walls and the floor. Then the credits role and that's it. Can't you just cruisse around the cities anymore once you have finished?

^Not sure if that's a complaint or serious question or both. But you can load up your same game and choose a past mission from the animus and then just cruise around the cities etc. Make sure to choose the final block though, because you will have all of your abilities etc. I guess you couldn't cruise around the cities after you finish the game becuase I'd like to think that ACII will begin immediatly after ACI, so it makes sense that you can't put Desmond back into the animus, becuase as soon as you look at the wall, game 2 starts...if that makes sence...

Yeah, just go back into the Animus, you can even start the game all over again by selecting new game, which puts you right back at the start if you feel like killing all the dudes again.

Hey just a quick question, with all the memory blocks, when you are finished, is there a way to finish things within say memory block 2, while having full rank? I am just trying to do all the quests so i have all my memory blocks 100% complete, and some of those informer challenges are damned hard.

Unfortunately, no you can only go back with the skills you had acquired up to that point (which makes sense given the way the Animus works, it's merely replaying an ancestors memories, if the ancestor hadn't acquired an item at that point, he's not going to have any memory of it).

yeah thats fair enough. I will just have to work on my stealth. Thanks

sorry to bump and old thread....but how do you go back into the animus at the end of nuber 1....doesnt let me....do you need to quit and start again?

Just walk up to it and press whatever the button is (I think it's X on the 360). You might have to do it after you activate the end credits though, I'm not sure.
