E3 2009: Splinter Cell: Conviction a 360, PC exclusive

360 News | Ubisoft issue Microsoft their own personal spy.
At Microsoft’s E3 2009 press conference, Max Béland and Alex Parizeau from Ubisoft Montreal took to the stage and revealed that Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction will be an exclusive Xbox 360 title.

During the conference the pair showed a demo of the game, which saw Sam Fisher strangling another character and asking who killed his daughter. Apparently, the gameplay is similar to Double Agent, with a notable boost in visual eye candy and a new weapon in the form of an EMP grenade. Ubisoft ended the presentation by teasing it was just “a small sample” of what to expect in the final build.

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction will be released in Q3 2009. It’s likely we’ll see more of the title during Ubisoft’s conference later today.

UPDATE: Ubisoft revealed at their press conference the game will also be released on PC. Looks like Max and Alex got it wrong the first time.

I thought the projected instructions against the game world looked really snazzy, though I would like an option of turning them off as they could get a little bit bothersome. I mean, they will mean there won't need to be a HUD overlay, but it seems to make the fact that it's a game a bit more apparent at the same time, by having large obvious lit up text across surfaces you and other characters interact with, made only for you to see, while noone else can.

That said though, I did like the effect, it probably just requires trying it out, I'm sure it'd grow on me.

The rest of the gameplay looked good too, and the story seems a bit stronger, as if there's a living breathing world outside of Sam Fisher's own activities (with the exception of the projected instructions). Looking forward to this one, do miss the raggy haircut though from the earlier builds. icon_sad.gif

Why would then shun the PS3 with this title. Splinter Cell, its hardly a massively interesting franchise?

Did Splinter Cell sell a lot on PS3? Probably not, developers have got to weigh in the costs of developing for a system verses how many sales they get. Ubisoft might have judged that the sales wouldn't generate enough cash to make it developing worth while.

That is probably true but since the very beginning of the production of this game it has tried its very best to market its exclusivity. It felt like there was a touch of "personal" with this one. Most likely generated, as you said, by lack of PS sales, but i'm fairly certain the PS2 days sold their fair share of Splinter Cell's? Double Agent not so much though as that was out AGES in advance on the 360.

Doh! I would have picked this up day 1 had it been on the ps3. I guess now I may just wait for the discounted pc version.

I'll be picking this up, loved the first and third (the second was a disappointment).

The footage of this game really impressed me. Looks a lot better than I expected. The last one was good, this one seems to have taken a big leap in terms of graphics and gameplay though. Some of the effects looked awesome.

Okay, I'll edit the article to acknowledge the PC version as well.

wasn't this always meant to be a Microsoft exclusive? i though that was announced befor Double Agent was released.

Trailer and screens look cool, but i'm kinda dissapointed. I was really psyched when they started showing off those screens with Hobo Sam, in the middle of a busy street/park, fighting in a office building, using improvised/enviromental weapons. Hiding in plain sight. Its almost a completely different game.

But still, this looks cool.
