The rumours of the game's demise were pointed directly at developer CD Projekt, with many believing that the game was being cut loose due to financial issues. Today, it has been revealed that there is more to the story, with WideScreen Games, the outsourced developer for the title engaging in a round of mud slinging, stating that they had not received payment for reaching certain development milestones on the project.
CD Projekt CEO Michal Kicinski has bitten back at the claims, arguing that delays by WideScreen Games had meant they'd not earned the performance payments that they had been expecting:
"It is sad that we cannot talk with WSG in normal business way, but communicate through media. It is absolutely not our style of making business, and we answer here as we feel forced to do this to clarify the unclear information.
"The most important fact is that development process didn't make planned release date possible, and moreover, propositions of the new release date were changing few times. Besides the schedule, technical incapability created a risk of missing planned quality, which is absolutely unacceptable. And this brought an end in our co-operation with WSG."
While all this in-fighting doesn't bode well for The Witcher: The Rise of the White Wolf with Kicinski stating that the game is on hold for the time being, he still believes that the game will make it out into the marketplace. CD Projekt will just need to find another way to get the game into stores.
The sequel to The Witcher is not expected to be affected by these developments.
