A surprising Call of Duty 4 stat

360 News | Seems quite a few skip the single-player campaign altogether.
Yesterday we reported on a Gamasutra article that revealed Xbox Live players have racked up 2.5 billion achievements to date.

There was actually another little interesting nugget of information in that report that we thought we would share with you. In tracking achievements to see how people are playing their games, developer Infinity Ward has discovered that thirty percent of players do not play the single-player mode in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare at all.

Of course this percentage is based only on those using Xbox Live, so the figure is probably being skewed somewhat higher. Still, it's a big proportion of players sticking just to the multiplayer mode and one that may have future implications for the gaming industry.

I can understand players going straight to multiplayer, but seriously COD4 has a great story and campaign (one of the best FPS I've played. So for players not playing the campaign, thye are truly missing out on an awesome experience.

^ You're right, Andy. Any player who skips over Call of Duty 4's campaign is missing half the point. It is extremely impressive in terms of pacing, and is undoubtedly worth playing through at least once.

I don't get how you could never play the campaing. Sure, if a friend brought it over I can understand not playing it, but how could you buy a game and only play half of it, just seems weird to me.

I've never played the campaign. Too boring and linear. COD hasn't had a good story since the earlier games (1&2), 4 just seems rather forced.

The multiplayer is definitely where it's at. While I do enjoy single player games, a game that's designed to be mainly multiplayer kind of feels lackluster.

Sure, they may have made a whole campaign, but really it's just a prop for where the real replay value is. The maps are just larger versions of the multiplayer maps, the guns are all unlockables (but not customisable mind you), and the bots are almost too easy. The real challenge comes from playing against people.

most people i know never play the single player campaigns for FPSes, but get them solely for the multiplayer, so really, not a surprise to me.

I finished the COD 4 campaign before touching MP, but with COD WOW i havn't managed to finish the SP campaign. Its wak compared to the multiplayer.

how can you know the story is 'too boring and linear' if youve never played the campaign?

I find it really sad and disturbing that so many people disregard single player games these days. In my day (assumes old-man voice), gamers enjoyed the satisfaction of playing through a well-designed single player mode where great game designers led you around, i.e. they directed the experience.

I don't know...sandbox games and multiplayer-focussed games deifinitely have their place, but I like it when a talented designer takes me for a ride.

Spot on Michael. I have to say some of my favourite games all come down to having a fantastic single player. Bioshock, Uncharted and Dead Space, Final Fantasy X are all brillant games and are solely single player experiences.

however, are they any worse than people who never play multiplayer?

i don't think i've loaded COD4 MP, and tbh, i don't see myself ever doing so, it just doesn't interest me.

I’m somewhat surprised, as Andy says, CoD4 has an amazing single-player campaign with excellent pacing and some of the best set-pieces in any FPS. Although, I’ve always predominately been a single-player gamer and am not that into multiplayer. Give me a compelling or entertaining story set in an interesting world with memorable characters any day of the week over yet another unoriginal stab at Deathmatch and CTF. Don't get me wrong, I still love playing online (I've been addicted to UT3 in the past 2 or 3 weeks, already racking up 200 wins, and before that, Quantum of Solace, Skate 2, Burnout etc), but single-player is where the most fun is at for me.

That’s what scares me most about the future of gaming. Moreso than DLC and badly implemented QTE’s.

if their anything like me they probably intend to finish the SP but never get around too it because the MP is too awesome to put down. i'm having that problem with killzone2 at the moment. icon_smile.gif

I would of never touched the campaign if my net wasnt out for a week, and as good as it was, i doubt i will even touch modern warfare 2's campaign unless my net is out again.
I find it alot (like a billion trillion times haha) more fun online, playing with mates, or even randoms, offline i last about 10 mins before im bored and back online again, or if the net is out i just stop playing, and thats with almost every game.

I'm not surprised at all, I'm sure the stats are the same for Halo 3 (although COD4 has a great campaign compared to Halo 3).

I'm the opposite. I played through single player (on Normal and half way on Veteran) and haven't even touched the multiplayer.

Same thing with Halo 3 and Gears of War 1.

Like someone else said, WTF? how can you know that withotu playing, COD4 is a breath of fresh air compared to other fps campaign , its like your playing in a movie every turn something new happens that isnt in your options e.g. Teammates trying to open doors with explosives while you defend them, Blowing up walls to get across

Or ( my fav part ) a gun gets slid to you across a broken road while your hurt and dieing

UHH such a good storyline

Wow this is very surprising for me. Sure I understand some people prefer multiplayer, but to not even touch the songle player campaign just seems stupid to me!

Not really surprising for me.. I was one of those people at one stage. I usually dislike the single player campaign in most FPS titles so I didn't touch it in CoD4 and didn't really intend to. Then about after 5 days of online play (in-games days that is) I decided to give it a go and even then only did the FNG and went back online. Then after about 10 days online I decided to have a go at the single player again and got instantly hooked. Such a great experience and I've since played and finished it numerous times. Plus racked up 25 days or so of online play icon_razz.gif

If you're one of those people who've stuck to the MP.. give it a go. It's awesome.

Doesn't surprise me either that 30% of all accounts hadn't played the single player when you've got people who have offline and online accounts, people who have two accounts, people who have 3 accounts etc etc. If it had been what percentage of people had skipped the campaign im sure the percentage would have been a lot lower

Owned GTA4 from launch and have never set foot out of the apartment...just played MP with my mates all the time.

multiple accounts, I dont think that people play multiplayer without touching the single player game.
you may not think it but there deffinetly is a hell of alot of people who dont play single player on alot of games, there is a fair few of my mates who never touch single player.

I whole heartedly disagree.
I can't understand what it is people like about COD4's story mode.
Yes I've finished it, and the sniper mission is pretty gnarly, but that was about it.

On the other hand I love Halo's story (probably because I've read the books).

And yeah, we got COD4 at launch and last week was the first time I touched single player on it, Really it was just too short, 4 hours or something?? (On normal, I know doing it on the harder difficulties would take longer).

Michael Kontoudis:
Personally I hate sandbox games.
No problem with COD/Halo.

The problem for is that there isn't any good single player experiences anymore. (IMO).
I really didn't like Bioshock, I don't really like Fallout 3 but I'm playing it anyway, haven't really played that many recent games though.
Give me Secret of Mana/Evermore anyday.
