More Mass Effect 2 details

360 News | Don't delete your old saves just yet.
IGN recently spoke to Grek Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka from Bioware about their upcoming projects, while of course focusing on the hotly anticipated Mass Effect 2. The two gave away some nuggets of information, albeit hardly releasing a flood of new details.

Interestingly, they revealed that they are already planning on making DLC for Mass Effect 2. Zeschuk commented "We'll look at Mass Effect 2 differently because it's a different kind of game. It's a very cinematic action shooter / RPG and with different kinds of consumers and different kinds of likes for DLC, so that's something we're always going to be iterating on."

They also talked about how they are taking into considerations the opinions of both critics and fans, and making a list of features with which to improve the sequel upon the original, and thus Mass Effect 2 will likely have more intense action and greater control over character interactions. Planet exploration is another area they'll be tightening up. They also confirmed that the PC and 360 versions of the game are being developed simultaneously, although it is not confirmed whether they will be released as such.

Finally, they made sure that fans knew that to still hold on to their old Mass Effect saves, as despite the image of a deathly Shepard in the teaser trailer, there will be a use for them yet.

Factoring in DLC already?

As good as the game may be, this might make it a no-buy already.

How long until each damn part of the game is sold separately for an extra $20? Want to explore other planets? $20. What to level up your character? $20. Want dialogue? $20.

I'll leave my final judgements until the game comes out, but I'm quite disappointed already.

Keeping your saves does give me a little hope, though I don't think they'll give players much more than the same look - giving them all their skills is too much. Which means we're going to see the way-to-often-used plot technique of the Hero losing his powers, and needing to get them back. Only hope otherwise is that Shepard is just an ally character, who either gets your old skills, or a prefabricated set of skills, and you are his student or something.

If the first DLC pack for Mass Effect is anything to go by, I'm the complete opposite. I really liked how they handled that mission; plenty of new stuff, fun, and not necessary to udnerstand the overall plot. You didn't loose out by not playing it, but got great gameplay if you did.

If that's how ME2 DLC will be handled them I'm glad they are planning it now. ME's DLC plan was terrible.

However, if they decide to pull a Bethesda I probably wont buy any.

While I like post-release DLC, the fact that they are planning it now means they have a mindset where they're not going to release the full game for the retail price. They'll release most of it, but they already are planning to take bits out.

I guess it's possible they were merely saying that they would support the game with patches and more updates, on top of the release experience (rather than from it), but I'm pretty wary of this kind of news.

It doesn't necessarily mean that at all. I can see how you interpreted it that way, but look at it from another angle; BioWare planned to consistently release DLC for the original Mass Effect, and all we got was one pack, and another more simple pack (although I'm not sure it's been released yet). It's been pretty much fail.

Just because they are planning DLC now doesn't mean they are cutting anything from the game. That DLC will still take time to develop. They are no doubt focusing on the package that is "Mass Effect 2", while on the side putting certain DLC elements into the design and conceptualisation stage. That way they can jump straight into DLC development when the full game is out.

If they manage to pull this off it's not cutting content, as for that content to be in the game Mass Effect 2 would require an even later release date. If DLC is consistent like they planned with ME2 (but failed to execute), then ME2 would have a theoretically infinite development time, which doesn't make sense.

I can certainly relate to your wariness. I, for one, hate most DLC. Bethesda are especially a company I would label as a complete failure in the modern DLC market (minus one or two mod). I guess I just have more faith that BioWare will deliver a full package with Mass Effect 2, and offer great side content in DLC.
