Midnight Club: Los Angeles Preview

360 Preview | A preview of the upcoming DLC.
While we enjoyed ourselves the last time we took to the streets of Los Angeles in the latest Midnight Club foray, it seems that we weren’t the only ones. And so, Rockstar are heading down the same path as they did with Grand Theft Auto IV and The Lost and Damned. On March 12th, Midnight Club: Los Angeles will be receiving some downloadable content named South Central, though in a form that has not been often seen in the short lifespan of console DLC.

The content will be made available for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, unlike The Lost and Damned, which was an exclusive for the Xbox 360. However, it will also be released in tiered form that gives the player a choice as to whether they want to pay for it or not. As some player have found out in the recent past, they wouldn’t be able to play against their friends if they didn’t want to download the new content. The South Central addition to MC:LA looks to get around this.

Hah, I've seen lower.

For those who played the game back at the end of last year, they will have found that the story in MC:LA was not one for the ages. That, and the developers borrowed from GTA IV by having rivals annoy you to come and entertain them. Thankfully, this didn’t involve taking them to play pool but actual, brutal races. In conceding these weaker elements, the DLC doesn’t add to these directly. However, the first tier of the DLC actually expands your racing space by about one-third by adding a big chunk to the south of your original map, hence the name, South Central.

The beauty of this first tier addition is that it's free. That’s right, no direct cost attached. So upon downloading this, you’ll have around 33% more driving space and four new neighbourhoods to explore. However, if you want the rest of the content attached with this DLC, you’ll have to pay the standard XBLM or PSN fees, or roughly 800 MS points or $16 respectively. This content includes nine new vehicles, 26 new races, 12 new battle maps, 10 new delivery missions and over 100 new red light races, as well as a host of new aesthetic and practical car part and accessory additions.

Among the nine new vehicles, two new classes are added: SUVs and (appropriately) Lowriders. Neither addition is strictly better for racing but each has its perks. SUVs are slowish and hard to turn but very beastly when if comes to bullying traffic, while the Lowriders allow you to have some fun with the hydraulics. While a lot of these new additions are sure to get the enthusiasts excited, those who like the game but aren’t into it enough to justify paying for the content aren’t left in the dark. While they won’t be allow to access the new stuff or initiate online races in this area, they will still be able to join in and play against friends that have taken the full plunge.

One problem, you'd so get beaten up driving that around South Central.

You would not expect the game's visuals to be much different, but the new area has a distinct style to go with the name. The roads are worse for wear, there aren’t as many high rise buildings and there are the iconic dirt roads and mining fields. While visually, the game won’t ever be too different with DLC, there can be more substantial audio additions made. In keeping with the theme, most of the musical additions will be rap and hip-hop based, as is typically associated with South Central Los Angeles.

The South Central DLC for Midnight Club: Los Angeles is quite the robust addition. All players will have access to the space addition, which is great for the less enthusiastic, while the payable extras are sure to give revheads something to look forward to. Debate will rage till the cows come home over the appropriateness and value, but in the very least, we have a non-paying option and (hopefully) we have certainly come some way from the Oblivion Horse Armour fiasco.
Overall:
With both free and paid options, the South Central DLC for Midnight Club: Los Angeles looks to have all players covered.
