The trailer begins by showing an Earth-like planet from space. Next, the words ‘Commander Shepard, SSV Normandy’ are displayed, with the character's service achievements listed beneath, including the liberation of Eden Prime and siege of the Citadel. The teaser goes on to the list Shepard's alien companions from the first Mass Effect game, Liara T'Soni, Garrus, Tali and Wrex. In the background, the N7 logo is depicted, over which the announcement is made that Commander Shepard has been killed in action. Finally, a Geth robot (the enemy in the first game) is viewed above the N7 patch. The official Mass Effect 2 logo then makes its first appearance. And in case there was any lingering confusion as to who would be picking up publishing duties, the Electronic Arts emblem can also be seen at the end of the trailer.
Interestingly, the Cerberus insignia (Cerberus were the main criminal faction in the first Mass Effect game) can be seen beside the announcement trailer. From the main Mass Effect community page, clicking on the words ‘Cerberus Database’ returns browsers to the trailer. The picture of Commander Shepard, which previously graced the top of the main site, has also been replaced by a silhouette filled with static.
While staying mum over the fate of Commander Shepard, BioWare's Community Coordinator Chris Priestly stated in the official forums "don't delete your Mass Effect 1 saves yet".
Last week, we heard about BioWare's plans for future Mass Effect sequels and downloadable content. The teaser trailer announcement, nevertheless, is the clearest indication yet that the adventures in the Mass Effect universe are far from over.
It is probably safe to assume that Mass Effect 2 will be released on Xbox 360 (owing to the "saves" hint), but BioWare has not yet made any official announcement regarding platform availability. Nonetheless, Electronic Arts has stated that the game will be released before the end its financial year in April 2010.
