Mass Effect 2 teaser trailer released

360 News | Shepard? Shepaaard!
Mass Effect fans, the days of speculation are officially over. Hours ago, Canadian-based developed BioWare released a teaser trailer for Mass Effect 2. The footage can be viewed over at the official Mass Effect site.

The trailer begins by showing an Earth-like planet from space. Next, the words ‘Commander Shepard, SSV Normandy’ are displayed, with the character's service achievements listed beneath, including the liberation of Eden Prime and siege of the Citadel. The teaser goes on to the list Shepard's alien companions from the first Mass Effect game, Liara T'Soni, Garrus, Tali and Wrex. In the background, the N7 logo is depicted, over which the announcement is made that Commander Shepard has been killed in action. Finally, a Geth robot (the enemy in the first game) is viewed above the N7 patch. The official Mass Effect 2 logo then makes its first appearance. And in case there was any lingering confusion as to who would be picking up publishing duties, the Electronic Arts emblem can also be seen at the end of the trailer.

Interestingly, the Cerberus insignia (Cerberus were the main criminal faction in the first Mass Effect game) can be seen beside the announcement trailer. From the main Mass Effect community page, clicking on the words ‘Cerberus Database’ returns browsers to the trailer. The picture of Commander Shepard, which previously graced the top of the main site, has also been replaced by a silhouette filled with static.

While staying mum over the fate of Commander Shepard, BioWare's Community Coordinator Chris Priestly stated in the official forums "don't delete your Mass Effect 1 saves yet".

Last week, we heard about BioWare's plans for future Mass Effect sequels and downloadable content. The teaser trailer announcement, nevertheless, is the clearest indication yet that the adventures in the Mass Effect universe are far from over.

It is probably safe to assume that Mass Effect 2 will be released on Xbox 360 (owing to the "saves" hint), but BioWare has not yet made any official announcement regarding platform availability. Nonetheless, Electronic Arts has stated that the game will be released before the end its financial year in April 2010.

2010 is too far away.

It would be so awesome if Shepard "dies" at the end of the game to set up the third game

I'm calling it: Shepard fakes his death to go into some deep cover assignment. Possibly involving killin' some Reapers.

They release a trailer indicating that Shepard is dead (or presumed dead) so we all say "oh noes" but the devs are going around telling people to keep their ME1 saves as the characters will continue on. hmm.

I'd agree with matrix-cat in that I don't think Shepard will really be dead. Perhaps you will get to play as a newly created character on a mission to find the truth surrounding Shepard. Then, hopefully, in the last third of the game you find Shepard and get the choice to either continue playing as your new character or return to Shepard with all your acquired skills and level. Intriguing. icon_shifty.gif

I have read the second novel which is set between games 1 and 2 and from that I can presume several things about the subject matter of the sequel.

Spoiler wrote

1 - The player will visit the Quarian fleet, and the fleet may even be the base of operations in place of the Citadel. The fleet is set up much like in Battlestar Galactica - and their flagship has people living on it, essentially in office cubicles. There is also a marketplace trade system in effect, instead of money.

2 - Biotics will be integral to the plot. The second novel centres around biotics with unusually powerful abilities. And I mean powerful.

3 - The bad guy of the second game will be The Illusive Man, an unnamed human who is essentially some form of human elitist terrorist akin to Blue Cosmos from Gundam Seed. His organisation will be the main antagonists.

4 - Sovereign's race most likely will not appear, and be saved for the third game.
All conjecture of course, but those are my thoughts. Mass Effect is one of my favourite games of all time. I cannot wait. icon_biggrin.gif

i have been waiting sooo damn long for (official) ME2 news to surface. I've heard some interesting rumours and it looks like 1 or 4 of them could be true. Liara is going to cause a lil bit of trouble and Garrus is hiding a secret and Shepard IS DEAD.

as for the final rumour , well , that will probably and hopefully not be true.
