R-Type Dimensions for XBLA Wednesday

360 News | 1200 points.
Microsoft has revealed that the newest entry into the classic 2D shooter series, R-Type Dimensions, will be surfacing on the Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday.

Fans of the series will be happy to learn that included in the game is a HD remix of the original R-Type, and its imaginatively titled sequel, R-Type II, so pretty pretty graphics are the order of the day - but they can be switched back to the 2D originals should the player wish. Players will take control of a high-tech flying machine, before proceeding to fight off the hordes of evil Bydo aliens that will do everything in they possibly can to ruin the player's day.

Developers Tozai have also added Infinite Mode, which will ramp up the challenge for anyone who finds things a bit too easy. As is standard fair for any Arcade remake, online co-operative play is an option to keep things from getting too tedious.

It won't be the cheapest thing on the Arcade, though, coming in at 1200 MS points.

400 points too much

Yeah was saying before, when did games start coming out at 1200 for the norm. I don't mind playing for full blown games but 1200 (Braid, SF2HD etc) for an R-Type updates is a bit rich. I can't remember the last time I saw a 400 classic go up. Have we moved past this point?

I love R-Type. But I think 1200 points sounds a bit steep.

Unfortunately it seems that 1200 points is going to be the new "norm" for XBLA releases it seems, which is a shame as it'll get to the point when people don't buy the games due to the price.

It sounds like they just reached that point to me.

Sounds like the norm for HD remakes and most new games. I'd complain, but, it's only $5-6 on top of an 800msp title. Does that mean I have to forego one take-out meal this week? Say it isn't so.

If the trial ends up being good, I will probably snatch it up.

A lot of people tend to complain about the prices, so they must be the minority if MS is *still* pricing games like this.

Remember R-Type Final for the PS2? The keyword here is Final. I thought that it was going to be the last R-Type game. As usual, we have been tricked. Why is it that game companies are so determined to keep all of their series alive?

I just picked that game up for $12 from the EB second-hand shelf. Great fun, but I'm not very good at it (playing on "baby" difficulty and still haven't passed the 3rd level icon_lol.gif )

I wouldn't pay any attention to the word "final" in a title. Remember "Friday the 13th: the Final Chapter" followed by seven more movies?
Indiana Jones' Last Crusade wasn't really the last, nor was Tomb Raider's Last Revelation.

They just put that on the box to make you go "Oooh, I'd better not miss that one, I wanna see how it all ends!"

Surely you jest.

Final Fantasy? Final Doom? Final Fight?

That's some dodgy titling right there. Don't get me started on the Never Ending Story...

I haven't bought an XBLA arcade games since Braid and BC: Rearmed. I thought it was a bit rich asking for so much on those games but I also thought it wouldn't be a trend so this sux hard. I'm gonna hold off on these half arsed games and just wait for big releases like SFIV, RE5, basically retail games only. The fact that i'm not getting any packaging or extras with the game is just gonna make it much easier to stick by it.

Also my biggest HATE with these stupid downloadable games is that they are locked to Xbox Live. I can't actually play more than 1/2 my games if i'm not connected to Xbox Live! Seriously what sort of rort arse **** is that!? Why do I need the internet if I don't wanna play online? It's not like the game needs data to be streamed over the net does it? It's just stupid digital signatures and behind the scenes security which is one of the last things I want in my gaming. I bought that **** fair and square so stop **** monitoring it!

Yea **** this! No more stupid XBLA games (except Castle Crashers 2).

This R-Type game is that strategy one from Psp right?

Eddie: Oh wow! Just saw that it's the **** original game with HD graphics! As in lots of Anti Aliasing. The graphics haven't even been redone like SF2HDRemix. What a **** rort!! ****!! Infact **** R-Type! Final was the last and it's really all you need. 101 **** ships! Eat that!

It locks the content to whichever console it was purchased on (and all users of that console can use all that content online or off). I think all you need to do is just redownload the stuff, and since you already have the content, it should just re-register (and not have to redownload entire files).

Hopefully that solves it (but I'm not 100% sure on that).

Nah that's not right. A few games I did buy when my HDD was plugged into Zarnoss' 360 yea and those games I can understand, but heaps of games (especially new stuff like Castle Crashers, Braid etc) are locked out unless Xbox Live is connected on mine or Zarnoss'. So **** that! I'm not redownloading anything! The games are locked to servers, in other words....one day...they'll all push one big red button and we won't be able to play these games anymore! Yeaaa no thanks! You can these stupid downloadable games, I don't need 'em.

I've had the same issue with my HDD in another 360. I just redownload the games (which takes half a second cause I already have it on there) and then it's good to go.

Actually, now that I think of it.....cuz i've sent my 360 back for repairs 3 times, maybe cuz i've been gettng refurbished machines that's why it's been doing it.

Might try that re-download thing tonight. Thanx for the tip.

I had no problem playing 1200 points for SF2HD where you can see the amount of effort gone into the game. Likewise with Castle Crashers, Bionic Commando etc.

But things like this is a total rip.

Hey Ugh, didn't you say you're getting a Jap 360 soon? Because all of those shmups could easily be on xbla but cost $100+. Prepare to feel the sting (Raiden Fighters is totally worth the asking price though)

I guess shooter fans have to fork over an arm and a leg to pew pew.

It was nice that we got Ikaruga at a decent price on XBL though, 'cause my local GameTraders has it for $100 new on Gamecube. Still waiting on Raiden to one day possibly maybe hopefully make it onto XBL D:

I've never played an R-Type game before, so I won't knock it until I try it. And at least they didn't milk it by releasing each game separetely at 800msp.

edit for rant: It's really annoying to find that 99% (maybe 100%?) of Japanese-only games are region locked. Then developers/publishers/whoever come out and complain about how the Japanese VG industry is failing to compete or whatever. It's because you don't let us play your damn games! Dx!

You know I had no idea what the hell you ppl were talking about with shmups. I was thinking, what the hell is this, some sort of 2D art game style or something? A quick google quickly made myself feel stupid. SHOOT 'EM UPS!
Just buy R-Types on PSN. You get Part 1 and 2. You don't need HD resolutions on these games. Anyways if you're playing shmups on LCD you're doing it wrong. CRT all the way.

I already have two versions of this game and I prefer my shmups in SD resolutions cuz I play all 2d games on CRT, having it in HD resolutions kinda makes it seem cheap or artificial in some way. Like SSFT2HD Remix looks very pretty but it almost looks plastic, kinda like a barbie doll. It's just missing something. Fire up Third Strike and it's much easier on the eyes imo. Maybe SSF2HD Remix has more to do with the artwork (cuz Udon sux) but I really don't like the way the characters don't contrast with the backgrounds, very sharp and clear but there doesn't seem to be any depth of field, also it's so NOT capcom.

I don't mind paying upwards of $100 for a game that is in very limited supply, is rare in arcades in Japan and unheard of in arcades anywhere else. Games like these are collectibles, that's why I have 2 copies of stuff like Mushihimesama, Ibara, Shikigami etc. Shmups are in a genre that is not going to be making a big comeback, the games rely in hardcore skill, timing and reflexes, something a lot of newskool games don't wanna be bothered with or just don't have the time for. These sorts of games are always gonna be rare imo, they might not be as sought after as JRPG's etc cuz of their popularity but they will always be rare so I gotta get in while I still can.

I'd love a new R-Type but paying more and more for old games with the anti aliasing turned up is like the opposite of what I want. It's stupid really. If anyone was serious about bringing some shmups to the west we'd see all the Strikers games, all the Shikigami games (who have had PAL releases aswell), and much more. I know CAVE stuff is hard to localise but games like Strikers, Castle of Shikigami (Shikigami No Shiro), Dragon Blaze, basically anything Psikyo, Raizing or Eighting should be released on XBLA or PSN. I don't wanna be playing the same **** games I was playing back on SNES and MD, let's get with the times. I mean new shmups are still being made so why the **** aren't we getting an opportunity to play them? It's cuz **** like R-Type, Asteroids, Galaga....crap people have played decades ago and have played to death keep getting re-released, why bother spending time and money releaseing new shmups when dumb old monkeys keep paying more and more for the old ones.

Seriously I hate people!

^ Actually, I disagree about the SF comment. I really didn't like the art direction (and music) of SF3 at all. I felt they nail the gameplay in that game but kind of lost the plot with art direction. I'm a bit of a fussy gamer when it comes to how my fighting characters look and in some instances HATE a game because no characters actually look or move decently. I felt I had this problem with SF3 cause I didn't like any of the characters (same problem I had with Guilt Gears).

I think SSF2HD is fantastic, except for Ryu and Dhalsim, which look terrible. But some of the charaters look awesome like Sagat, Cammy and Guile. Some of the stages are a bit static though but others great. Like Ken's stage looks fantastic while Dhalsim's looks awful.

No way! Third Strike is considered the best in the series, especially the hardcore tournament players. Nearly all of the characters (except Sean) are evenly balanced, you have a wealth of options like high jump, air guard, cancels, super cancels etc. It's the most refined version. I hear SFIV is the most all-round version but when it comes to hardcore SFIII: Third Strike is it. Not debateable.

SSF2HD is ok. Nothing special. Redrawn art doesn't really mean anything. It's basically the same game as The New Challengers. I actually prefer the look of Capcom's drawings....I mean they did invent the **** after all.

I know the music was a bit hit and miss, but those are original Street Figher raps man! That's pretty cool.

Edit: I agree some of the characters looked weird (like Emo Remy) but they all played real solid.

Also characters like: Q, Urien, Dudley, Alex, Hugo and Makoto are some of the best characters in Street Fighter ever! Also I thought you liked that Anime type character art (Dawn of Sorrow Boxart)? I'm not a huge fan of it but SFIII: Third Strike absolutely nailed it imo. Made it look nice and colourful but still all muscly and mean at the same time. Imo SFIV is a direct upgrade of these visuals in 3d. I don't imagine the character art to be based off any other game.

I was talking completely about appearances with SF3. I know the game is considered the best 2D fighter around.

I do really dig the rebalance in SSF2HD though. Almost all the characters are very playable now. Cammy is awesome plus I love Guile's new flash kick which you can almost use as a rush attack to get in close to your opponent.

See edit.

Also the animation in Thrid Strike is probably the best i've seen in 2d. Next in line would be the Metal Slug games imo. There is so much detail in Third Strike. Even Yoshinori Ono has said there was nowhere they could go in 2d because Thrid Strike was the pinnacle.

According to the Ono they at Capcom felt they had done as much as they possibly could in SF in 2D. In other words Capcom felt that they couldn't go above and beyond what they did in Third Strike when it came to a 2D SF game in terms of both graphics and gameplay. Ono went on to mention that while they could do could've done HD sprites that it would'nt have effected the gameplay much and that is was something that SF2HD pretty much already had covered.

I didn't mind Yun, Yang or even Makoto but the rest of the cast looked like they belonged in the Last Blade or Guilty Gears. I mean, Twelve and Q don't fit into the SF universe at all. I MUCH prefer the Street Fighter Alpha characters. I don't think it's in the same style of Dawn of Sorrow. I just didn't like the style of the game, with the funky music and voices, I guess and I really don't think it flowed from SF2 which was a little more realistic and gritty.

I think it's a good thing that SF4 is a rebirth of SF2. Although I hate the look of the new boss (again, another VF type rip off), Crimson Viper, Rufus and El Fuerte (what the hell, is this the exact guy from VF5?). Abel and the rest of the Alpha characters are OK (plus I love it how Guile can wear Charlie's outfit too!).

Don't get me wrong, I played SF3 to death and loved the game, I'm just nit picking at the asthetics.
