Director wants to make Gears film trilogy

360 News | One is not enough for Len Wiseman.
Hollywood director Len Wiseman has revealed his plans to not make just a single film based on the Gears of War franchise - he is keen to create an entire trilogy.

"The hope is that we're wanting to do three movies and really cover the bases on everything. Basically a harder edged Lord Of The Rings," the Underworld and Die Hard 4.0 Wiseman revealed to Bloody-Disgusting (via Eurogamer) in a red carpet interview.

Apparently, Wiseman wasn't much of a gamer, until a scene in Die Hard 4.0 forced him to be.

"I suck at video games, it just takes me too long and I can’t get the coordination of ‘em. When I was [working] on Die Hard 4.0, I had to choose some video game for the background in a scene with Kevin Smith," stated Wiseman. "I just really connected with [Gears of War]; the design of it the world, the whole thing. So I actually bought an Xbox 360 to start researching what it was."

The film is still being written, so it's unlikely we will see it in cinemas anytime soon. A report from Temple Hill Entertainment last year suggests that a mid-year release in 2010 could prove possible.

It never sounds promising when a director; someone who is meant to be a visionary, is already talking of creating a trilogy despite the first film being nowhere near release itself (look at how Chronicles of Riddick 'panned' out - pardon the pun). To top it all off, comparing the aforementioned yet to be released film (that is based on a videogame no less) to the 'scope' of a movie already released (and to critical acclaim) makes him sound like a complete idiot (and an unoriginal one like that).

Shouldn't a movie stand on it's own merits? I feel that saying something you're putting your name to is "kinda like *insert title of successful film here*" is a bucket of wank..

Die hard 4.0 was.. not great, and i've only heard lousy things of the underworld movies from those who've seen them, and lord of the rings really doesn't seem like a good comparison to aim for, wrong genre, wrong feel. are we going to have a first movie where they just walk around for two hours?

Idiot. This is going to die, and die hard now. It's a film based on a game, and he seems to think it'll become a trilogy? RE films worked because they can stand on their own merit, they're just zombie flicks to those who don't know RE. With Gears, what casual is going to be interested in some random muscley dudes beating down on ugly muscley dudes? It's far too niche.

I agree. This will most likely tank, especially when Wiseman states that he's not even going to focus on the Locust Horde. (read here: http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/18660/Len-Wiseman-Gears-of-War-to-Be-a-Trilogy-of-Movies/)
Isn't that what Gears is all about?
And referencing it with the likes of Lord of the Rings? Please!

I quite liked Die Hard 4 - to me it was better than Die Harder and Die Hard with a vengeance ...
Underworld was good too - cant say the same about Underworld evolution.

I think Wiseman can make a good Gears movie - Kind of like a Saving private ryan meets War of the Worlds... .

As a Gears Fan - I am relishing the thought of a trilogy - however I just want to see it made right.

I will never ever understand this constant need for everything to be a movie. Successful book? Make it a movie. Game? Movie. Comic book? Movie. Never mind that the movie is never ever as good as the original, nothing is anything until it's a movie.

And even worse, everything has to be a trilogy now, too. One movie is completely unnecessary, but somehow three movies is super necessary.

And then there's the fact that these games already are movies. Gears of War is just a pastiche of action movies, and thus isn't even unique in the world of video games. When you turn it back into a movie it loses whatever slight measure of uniquity it had to begin with.

Obviously it's all about money, but video game movies never gross very high. I can't imagine why the combination of hack director, cast who can do no better and unoriginal premise is so enticing to producers.

Nothing could be worse than Uwe Bowl, Anderson or McG directing Terminator.

lets have a 300/sin city/ scanner darkly style CGI blood bath sponsored by Jack Daniels and Winfield and make a chest thumping **** action film. IMO that would be the only way to make a Gears movie and it would be good mindless fun please don't let them take this seriously it needs to be a dumb action film with lots of roady cam and chainsaw kills.
