Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned Preview

360 Preview | You'd better be getting a lot of boom for that buck.
Let’s face it. The content and episodes that have been promised for download across Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network so far has been a failed concept. We really should have seen it coming when the horse armour fiasco came to light, and the fact that games such as Mass Effect have only had one downloadable episode since its release at the end of 2007, despite the amitions and promises. Even the usually reliable Rockstar haven’t been able to deliver on time, as February 2009 is a lot later then August 2008. However, with the content being offered in their expansion, The Lost and Damned, they are looking to make up for it in a big way.

Expanding on Rockstar’s monster hit, Grand Theft Auto IV, the downloadable content for the Xbox 360 is due out on February 17th. While the game comes at a hefty price tag of 1600MS points, from what we’ve seen of The Lost and Damned, this might be justified. While it may be coming out slightly later than promised, the wait looks to be worth it. Whether you have finished GTAIV or not won’t matter, as you can start a new game titled The Lost and Damned.

The Lost and Damned seems to be more than just a downloadable episode, as the amount of content and story that are being promised are more than has been seen before from something that you can download from either XBL or the PSN. It’s more akin to expansion packs that are commonly seen amongst popular PC strategy games. The Lost and Damned has players taking the role of Johnny from the biker gang, The Lost. Johnny has been keeping things tidy while the gang leader, Billy, has been in rehab. However, Billy’s out and spitting all over the good relationships that Johnny built in his absence.

GTAIV seemed to be constantly reminding you of how to play the game. However, The Lost and Damned gets rid of the whole character building aspect normally found in GTA games and you’ve got most things that you want at your disposal from the get go. This includes safehouses, access to weapons and vehicles and the fact that there won’t be such a pressing need for money. Furthermore, your phone will already be full of contacts. This tries to back up the motif for the game, where it’s more about intensity and action, rather than the survival and subsistence of Niko’s journey.

This will never get old.

This is backed up in the missions, as the few that we got to have a look at were seriously hectic. One mission had us raiding a rival biker’s hideout on the basis of revenge. Armed with a grenade launcher, we proceeded in destroying just about everything that moved or had four wheels. This content also sees the return of on-rails missions. Being armed with an automatic shotgun while speeding across the motorways, chased by police cars and choppers was an amazing thrill. Thankfully, the sequences are dynamic, so repeating won’t be the same. Furthermore, there are checkpoints within missions now, so you won’t have to replay the ‘whole’ mission if you fail.

One of the interesting aspects of the content was how Johnny’s story was connected to Niko’s. Players may remember an early mission where Johnny met up with Niko and Playboy X to check out a drug deal. When it went sour, Niko and Playboy X escaped through the roof. In The Lost and Damned, you’ll play as Johnny and escape through the front door. If you were wondering, yes, that’s head on with the cops. It will be interesting to see how much of Johnny’s story will be incorporated into what we played back in April of last year.

Apart from the directional changes and additions, the game plays and looks essentially the same to GTAIV, though this is hardly a surprise. One of the minor tweaks has bikes being able to take bends at much higher speeds, as well as the addition of a team mechanic, where your gang will get better if they survive through the missions. Visually, The Lost and Damned is the same as GTAIV, though you may see things ‘differently’ as you go through locations that you didn’t go through before. The radio stations have been updated to be a bit more contemporary, as a financial crisis was mentioned during our play time. Finally, there will be some additions and updates to the multiplayer.

The Lost and Damned looks to be amongst the most sophisticated additions to a game acquired through either Xbox Live or the PlayStation Network. It’s quite reminiscent of the expansion packs that came in the months following the release of popular PC strategy games. Furthermore, it seems that you’re thrown straight into the action, with none of the stuffing around or 'character building' to get in the way, particularly when you’ve already done that playing as Niko. So as the first of two promised expansions (fingers crossed) set to release this year, it looks to set a high standard, not just for the GTA series but downloadable content in general.
Overall:
The Lost and Damned is promising to be more an expansion rather than a simple piece of downloadable content. And a very intense and action-oriented one at that.

I really need to finish GTA 4....

If the majority of the missions in this DLC are different to the ones in GTA IV I'll be excited. GTA IV's number one problem is that it has no mission variety, just 70 gunfights and 20 car chases. This on-rails mission in the DLC sounds good, like a return to the San Andreas glory days of amazing missions, but hopefully there will be more than one unique mission.

This sounds fun, unfortunately as a PS3 owner Rockstar doesn't want my money =(

I honestly don't see this being worth US$20 and god knows how much locally. I won't be buying.

@ grim-one. They want your money, they just wanted the millions MS threw at them more.

The real disgusting issue is whether bits were taken out of the finished game in order to charge more for the "extra content" later.

See the former Eidos staff members comments on this happening to Tomb Raider last yr. Allegedly they just took out one or two levels.

I highly doubt that they intended for a seperate section to the original game where you play as another character in a completely seperate storyline and then thought, oh let's rip out this side plot that has very little to do with Niko's progress and sell it as DLC later on, suckers. That doesn't seem that feasible.

I'm sure this content will be great but I feel Rockstar have missed the boat with how long this content has taken to arrive. If this had come out 6 months ago I think it would have sold more copies.

Obviously you didn't read all of the staff members comments. They already stated that yes levels were taken out of Tomb Raider Underworld but only because they couldn'y finish them in time for the games release and it wasn't an option for them to release the game late. The levels were not taken out of the game so that they could be released as DLC.

Well MS and their US$50 million in cash was what stopped Rockstar from bringing this and the next DLC to the PS3

I still think that this is only a timed 360 exclusive and well come to PS3/PC at some point in the future, but either way I won't be buying it. I was over GTA IV around the time I reached 50% story completion, the rest was a chore.

Meh GTAIV is dead to me.

They might have had it as a separate story arc, where Niko temporarily joins a biker gang. Having cut it from the original release (for whatever reason) they could have retooled it to have a new character.

Having said that... given the length of time it took to be released, it's unlikely =)

I'm going to buy this. I think a short burst of the game (10-20 hours) is exatly how it should be played. I dare say this will be more enjoyable the the actual main game. I found GTAIV to be way to long.

I reckon this will be a major hit for M$ and their DLC snag. I'd like to see a survey of ppl that bought the 360 version over the PS3 just for the DLC.

I really hope a future DLC pack sees Firefly Island's amusement park reopening. That would be cool as I'm a big Coney Island/Cyclone/Wonder Wheel fan & it would be great to cause some mayhem in a fictional version.

Maybe even have some countryside to do stuff in. I'd love to have some San Andreas type landscape variety in next-gen and while I'm sure the next game may well include this, it would be great if a DLC pack had a bit of forest, country town and mountain or something.

noticed today that it's on EB's list:
http://www.ebgames.com.au/Xbox/product.cfm?ID=13936

$35 for a code in a box (so you still have to DL the content, not like R&C:Q4B).
what's that, like 2200 points?

while i'm sure it'll be worth $35, and i'll still get it for that, i wonder if that's an indication of the XBL price?

it's more expensive cause you also get a poster and shit with that.

pc maybe, but ps3 doubt it, i cant see MS spending that much for a timed exclusive dlc, that just seems too crazy.
