Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and more announced

360 News | Guitar Hero 5, Tony Hawk and James Bond, oh my!
MTV Multiplayer are reporting that Activision Blizzard have announced several sequels to their key franchises at a Massive Inc. upfront, including Guitar Hero 5, a new instalment in the Tony Hawk franchise, a new James Bond title, a new racing title from Bizarre Creations, and perhaps most interestingly, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, to be developed by Infinity Ward.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is currently slated to be released in the US in their Fall, 2009, but no further details were revealed. However, some morsels of information about the other announced titles came to light, including the fact that Guitar Hero 5 will feature in-game advertising with chains such as Burger King. In addition, the new Tony Hawk game is being built on the promise that, "you’re not going to be playing this game with a controller in your hands."

Finally, a new original James Bond title will be released next September by Project Gotham Racing developers Bizarre Creations, who are also working on a new racing IP, described as Forza meets Mario Kart.

Yes ,because we all hate doing that >.>

I don't intend to buy the game but if they don't atleast give the option for the controllers to be used then they can get @$%^@#%#&@$#&@$#&%'d

Finally! I hate that developers assume that just because i own a gaming console i naturally want to want to use a game controller. they are ever so inconvenient.

(please note that this post contains high levels of sarcasm)

i love that they are trying to make the game so much more realistic. pretty soon we'll all be using not only a skateboard peripheral, but a skate park one too. then also a footpath peipheral to simulate the actual trek to the skate park. seriously, if i want to play a skating game with a skateboard like control, ill friggin skate for real.

So much petty cynicism.

Some people might, oh I don't know, really enjoy a skating game that uses the balance board.

In other words, "Skate's controls ***** us in the ******** so we're going to make some effort to beat them, but instead of copying them... we'll just copy Wiifit instead".

Problem is that all the impressions I've heard from the use of the balance board by Skate It on the Wii makes it sound quite hard to get right. If I play another Tony Hawk (which after skate. is pretty unlikely) I would want to be using a controller. Fix the damn game, not the controller. skate. was fine with a regular 360 controller, so don't try to look THAT far outside the box.

On another note, Yes please to MW2. Instant purchase.

As predictable as the sun going to rise really.

Yeah but make a new skating IP then. (is that what its called? ip) anyway, the whole point about tony hawk is precision, making massive convos, being able to hit insane 'lines' and get a combo of a few million etc. That was its only + over skate. Just its just going to turn into some awkward peice of S*** balance board s*** that will be a novelty. Project 8 is the last tony hawk game in my eyes. Although havnt played PG yet so i cant decide.

Ahhh. Just like the ol' skateboard/snowboard peripheral that came with tony hawks 3 on the ps2. That was THE most exciting thing i'd ever used! (im kidding, its actually still in the garage and i only used it once. icon_razz.gif)

COD: MW2.. Oh Yeah!

Another CoD is a welcome addition....

Didn't they learn from 007 racing from EA back on the PSX that a Bond racing game just isn't a good idea!

And Tony Hawk games have become redundant since Skate was released

I am so **** sick of cod.

Huge waste of 80 bones when i finally went and bought it, by the numbers crappy gameplay, xbox original gfx, shoddy hit detection(do headshots even exist in the cod universe?)and tension?Suspense? What? All i did the entire game was jump through a set of pre-determind hoops the developers had put in place for me to jump through, reach point A, triggers X baddies to spawn, kill X baddies, which triggers Z waypoint........rinse repeat.

I got suckered into buying that crap once, never again.

But it's pretty fun icon_smile.gif I've been waiting for CoD4-2 since i finished the first one.

With that statement, you have just described COD4 as well.

When I picked up Call of Duty on the PC waaay back, I thought....finally a mod which has heaps of scripted events. The game was solid but it was actually just quake or doom or any other fps but heaps of scripted events, some of them seemingly based on real skirmishes or confrontations but every single game in the series has been exactly the same....it's just Medal of Honor but more polished.

It pisses me off that this generic series time and time again get the sales and GOTY votes. I did buy COD2 cuz when that came out there wasn't much out on the 360 so I did it to keep myself busy. The game was solid but it was COD 1 but with different scenery. I also bought COD4 but it was mainly to participate in a bit of multiplayer gaming which I did for about 1-2 weeks but mates and I got sick of Counter Strike gameplay which we got sick of back when we had counter strike (no and i'm not talking source).

I know people will argue that every game ever made is just an extension of what came before it but Jibbs has summed it up perfectly, it's a game made of hoops, you jump through them at the developers pace, no deviation whatsoever and then you do it all over again, using the same weapons you had in counter strike, medal of honor and numerous other games that came before it.

Seriously people wonder why I hold the original Halo in such high regard and it's because of the cohesiveness of the whole experience, the weapons, enemies, voice acting, AI and especially the vehicles all felt like they were from the same world and you could interact and with any of these elements at any point in the game (if you see all the fan made videos you will believe the vehicles can basically be taken anywhere for some experimentation). Jumping into a banshee felt like jumping into a ghost but you could actually fly instead of just hover....it all just felt right, it did the 2 weapon thing, the recharge shield thing....both of which I had never seen in a game before. Imo it has done more for FPS than most people will realise. No game before it had such seamless vehicle intergration. Oh yea the physics....floaty and arcadey fun...that's what it was. Anyways COD has NEVER done any of this!! If you get to use a tank it's when the game tells you to, you can't get out of it, infact you pretty much just drive in a straight line following the other tanks or whatever script has been written for that chapter. I've never seen any awesome physics, infact lots of clipping is the order of the day in COD when you usually kill someone, whereas in Halo the dude goes flying and drapes himself over the landscape....which is not only awesome, it's write home take a phote sorta awesome!

Yet a majority of people love COD no questions, will buy COD no questions. It really comes down to the fantasy vs real world settings imo. The world has got so many Gomer Pyle wannabe's that no matter how superior a game, base it on a fantasy setting and it'll never sell as well as something based in real life. That imo is the problem with the world, wow i'm getting like major deja vu right now....anyways...actually that's all.

New Guitar Hero? Awesome. Let's hope their deal with Massive means that with the amount of in-game advertising to go up, that DLC prices will go down.

CoD4 was an average game at best. I'm glad I only ever borrowed it off a friend and never dropped down the $80~ required to get it. So I'm currently giving CoD:WaW a miss, and will do the same with CoD4-2 unless they churn out something really good.

New Guitar Hero, shock horror. Consumers aren't going to keep buying the game again and again each year, the sharp drop in sales for GHWT over GH3 shows that trend is already beginning. And also:

Uhmm.. yay. Because the already excessive advertising in-game wasn't enough.

On Call of Duty: MW2.. I'm cautiously optimistic. My only concern would be if Activision-Blizzard simply forced IW into making a direct sequel, which wouldn't surprise me.

Also at ugh's post.. I have to agree with the comparison of CoD to Halo in terms of scripted design. I personally wouldn't be as scathing towards the CoD series because of its scripted gameplay, since there is most certainly a place for it, but it's also nice when the exciting moments of a game are caused not by a simple trigger but instead by direct player actions. Deride the Halo series as much as you like, but there is something to admire in scenes such as towards the end of the Halo 3 campaign, where you take down two scarabs with whatever vehicles or weapons you please and in any style you like, contrast to say CoD4 where the thrills are delivered when the game wants to deliver them.

On-rails shooting sections are a staple of CoD games, and it is disappointing to see such failed vehicle integration in the series. Many other games have gotten this right, Crysis and Halo come to mind, where the 'battlefield' feels so much more authentic, probably because the vehicles are being controlled by actual AI, unlike in CoD games where they follow a straight path, maybe crash through a wall, then sit stationary until you fulfil your objective of planting some explosives on it or something.

it's strange - i always felt Halo was much more Doom-like than the COD games ever were.
mostly because of the whole 1 man against the universe thing that Halo has, whereas COD actually feels like a war, with comrades and the like.

and i guess personal preference, but i've always hated vehicle components of FPS games, Halo, COD, whatever... the only FPS game i've liked the vehicles in has been FarCry 1 (potentially Crysis, and FC2 i suppose, but i've not played them).
Huh, really? While it was well integrated into the game, I absolutely hated vehicles in Far Cry (and to an extent, Crysis). Handling just wasn't fun, and you virtually became a sitting duck in a vehicle, making it easier to move on foot.

I think the 'one man vs the universe' style of game is unfairly flagged as archaic when in reality it's necessary depending on the type of atmosphere you're trying to build. I certainly wasn't trying to imply that CoD is 'Doom-like' in its scripted design, but I hardly think Halo is either since you spend the better part of each game flanked by a squad of marines.

There are AI soldiers fighting alongside you in Halo just as there are in COD, infact they die and don't respawn like the ones in COD so they're not as superficial. Infact they display a much wider range of moves and AI scripts, the ones in Halo are dynamic, jump in a vehicle and they'll jump in with you, bloody COD team mates just run from one area to another based on whether you have passed an invisible line. They'll wait next to a door way untill you pass through this door way and that's all they'll do. In Halo they might grab a stray ghost or they might follow you wherever you go and they don't all behave like this, some might act like COD teamates and be completely scripted but other aren't which shows atleast a big of variety was injected into the programming instead of just 'cut n pasting' one comrades AI into another.

Also the enemies in Halo are as far from Doom/cannon fodder type enemies as you can get. You haven't fought a single enemy that has better AI than an Elite. The thing will duck, roll, strafe, flank, use vehicles, try and ram you with said vehicles, hide for safety and finally go berserk and kamikaze it when all hope is lost. I still haven't seen a single enemy fight for their lives, these Elite's might aswell be living breathing creatures as far as i'm concerned.

Whether you like vehicle components in a game or not, having it intergrated seamlessly into the game and not forcing you to use them (i've completed every part of the halo games without vehicles, much more challenging which is the reason I did it) cannot be chocked up as a negative against the game.

Amazing how little details like these escape people. Halo is superior to COD in everyway shape and form.

Look i'm not saying COD sucks, i'm just saying it's got that Wii effect, more casuals will play it cuz it's something that they can relate to and more testosterone fueled meat heads play it...for obvious reasons and then you have gamers which pick up the game cuz it's just solid further adding to the games sales. So nothing against COD, it's the market/demographics which make it what it is.

Ah yes! I forgot about this - CoD4 died for me towards the last level. Was playing on Veteran and was being utterly destroyed by enemy fire. Noticed my support guys were dropping right left and centre.. yet I still had all these soldiers supporting me.

Realised that as soon as one would die, a new soldier would pop out from behind a building, complete with a different name when you put the reticule over them. Each soldier would march over, fire 2-3 shots, and then die. Process would repeat itself. Completely killed any immersion I had at that point - what an easy way around having garbage AI. Instantly removed any motivation I had to protect my 'comrades'.
The "war revolves around the player" of Modern Warfare really hurt the immersion factor for me. It was insanely obvious in the last Marine level, where you jump through the 2nd story window down to the alley below and get into a firefight... the enemies wouldn't spawn until you jumped out the window, so even if you threw a grenade to clear out behind the fences etc in front of you, enemies would spawn there- places it would be physically impossible to be- as soon as you landed. Ugh.

i'm not saying it doesn't have it's place, but to me the friendly AI in COD was better than those in Halo. i lost count of the number of times friendlies would get in my damn way in Halo 3, or stuck on a pebble, or something useless. they were there (or supposed to be there) but they might as well have not been for all the good they did. in COD, you could go AFK with a group of allies around you, and they could take care of the enemy for you, in Halo, they had a worse hitrate than Imperial Stormtroopers, and would die just as easily.
(and i suppose the "revolutionary" features of Halo 1 didn't impress me, since i had seen them in other games before.)

like you, i'm also not saying Halo is a bad series - though personally i think it's vastly over-rated - but i do think the storytelling elements (cutscenes etc.) are absolute arse, the story itself is good, but the way Bungie tell it is shockingly bad, but they are fun games. there is definitely room for improvement in COD too, but personally speaking, i think COD was better.

but they're also different enough that they fill their own niches and moods, and i will be getting H3 Recon (or w/e it's called now) when that comes out too.
