Gears of War 2 sells two million units over launch weekend

360 News | Did that really surprise anyone?
Microsoft have sent out a press release today revealing Gears of War 2 sold more than 2 million units across the globe during its opening weekend. The game launched worldwide on November 7, exclusively for the Xbox 360.

To celebrate the milestone number, Microsoft were also kind enough to release a few interesting facts. Apparently, more than 1.5 million people logged into Gears of War 2 on Xbox Live and ranked up an impressive total of 15 million hours of gameplay, an average of 10 hours per player. This has set a new record for concurrent Live players. The same group also collectively unlocked more than 19 million Achievement points.

Before you rush off to beef up your gamer score card, why not take a look at our Gears of War 2 review?

yeah, it has to be admitted that the achievements for gears 2 will be WAY easier than gears 1, mostly because of the new seriously (unless campaign kills counted as well in the first one...)

then again there are more collectibles this time, and they don't stand out as much...

The achievements needed to change. Gears 1 actually changed the way people changed online, for the worse. It's much better now and the new *seriously* will still take people a LONG time to achieve.

IT didnt change the way people played, it encouraged people to run out and fight for new weapons instead of camp

But will it outsell the original?

A lot more competition this time around for it on all fronts.

Regardless, the people that are spending time on Live are probably waiting for a match. A laggy match.

Loving Gears2 and especially Horde mode, but the wait for a public match is getting beyond a joke...
I just hope it is because people are playing mainly the campaign mode at the moment and soon there will be a flood of players looking for matches...

That said, barrett is right. When Gears1 was released, there wasn't much competition around like there is today...

Multiplayer matchmaking is a big mistake with a game that is renound for host advantage and lag online. With GOW1 online players could pick and choose a lobby based on ping for a good connection and an even playing field. With global matchm aking this is unavailable and players are forced to endure laggy matches. This format poses big problems for an international minority who are outnumbered by US players who dominate host. This also once again makes me laugh when I read the Microsoft Xbox Live motto "Play anyone, anytime, anywhere".

Off topic, not that I know if there is one here, but as you are all gamers and Australian I thought this may be of interest. As we all disagree with the current OFLC saga with banning games etc. this little tid-bit caught my eye recently http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/10/22/gears-of-war-2-too-violent-for-germany-and-japan/ It seems we get away with some things and are deprived of others. Another fine example of how crazy our ratings system is.
