Gears of War 2 bargain round-up

360 News | What you really want is a price war.
Gears of War 2 is officially released on Friday November 7, and to celebrate we’ve compiled a list of specials across Aussie retailers. To start off though, we’re going to explain the different versions that are available.

As many of you would know, there are two versions of Gears of War 2: a standard edition and a collector’s edition. The standard edition retails for $99.95 and is just the basic game. The collector’s edition however, retails for $119.95 and features a Making of… DVD, a 48-page book containing art and character profiles, steelbook DVD case, and an Xbox Live code to unlock the gold-plated Lancer Assault Rifle for online play.

With that out the way, the standard edition is the cheapest at JB Hi-Fi, who are charging just $74. In case they run out of copies or are closed for stock-take, then Big W is the best alternative at $76.84. JB Hi-Fi also happens to be the cheapest place to pick up the collector’s edition, along with GAME, with a price tag of $99. Alternatively, Dick Smith stores are charging just 78 cents more.

With so many great games being released lately, it’s understandable if you simply can’t budget for Gears of War 2. Fortunately, a few retailers are offering trade-in deals. Again, JB Hi-Fi is arguably offering the best deal – head in to your local store and trade-in three Xbox 360 games and you’ll walk out with Gears of War 2 Collector's Edition for FREE. As usual though, we recommend you take a peek at their exclusions list (.pdf file). Finally, EB Games are offering the standard edition for $19.95 when you trade-in two titles that are on their eligible games list.

the dick smith catalogue has the collector's edition listed as the same price as the standard, which is in contradiction to their website, and apparently a typo.

but who knows, someone might price-match anyway.

(EDIT: link to the catalogue page online.)

As I said in the Gaming Bargains thread in Gaming Talk, Dick Smith have the right to not honour the price and there have been a few reports from forum members who have asked their local store(s) about it and they said they won't do it for that price.

That said, it will come down to who serves you. You might get away with it and you might not. With other retailers, they may ring up Dick Smith and double check the price or they won't think twice about it.

For those wondering, I haven't mentioned it in the article because I don't want to make any promises or cause false hope. I am however, happy for anyone to discuss the misprint and mention if they got EB or whoever to price match.

Thanks for the price round-up Joesph.

I believe JB are now doing a 'Trade 3 get it Free' on the Collectors Edition of the game.

Actually, GAME are doing the standard at $79 and the collectors at $99 =) Well.. in WA anyway.

hope the GAME at Hornsby is selling collectors for $99.

Can anyone confirm that it's $10 down $10 off for all preorders at DSE? I thought it was, but can't find evidence on their website.

Okay, thought the FREE was for for standard only. Thanks Charly and Eggy

Will update to include GAME's prices, thanks.

Qbert, DSE should still be doing the $10 down $10 off deal.

Cheers for the heads up Joseph. That means only one pre-order got past me at that price.

Wow that's news to me. I've been totally zoned out at work this week but for some reason thought the trade deal was for the standard. O well...

The best way to get the limited edition is to convince EB to price match DSE's $79.78 price as well as there $10 down $10 off pre-order deal.

That's what I did and now I have a fully paid $69.78 copy of the LE and I'll be getting the EB exclusive pre-order COG Tags when I pick up tomorrow.

Does that mean that both standard and collectors editions are tradeable against?

It looks that way because both collectors edition prices and standard prices are on that trade promo.

They denied me standard fable because they only had the Collectors on the catalogue, but this time it looks like they mention it both under the trade section

Harvey Norman had a better pre-order deal than EB though, you get the Marcus action figure which is way more impressive than some cog tags.

Will have to get them to price match Dick Smith for a better price though.

Got EB to match the DSE catalogue today for the LE. Couldn't see any reference to $10down-$10off on their catalogue (aside from WOTLK) anyway.
