Mirror's Edge to become a trilogy

360 News | First one still not out yet.
Mirror's Edge isn't even out yet, but Owen O'Brien, a Senior Producer at DICE, has revealed that the company is already planning two sequels. That would make it a trilogy, then.

"The story we're telling at the moment is kind of a trilogy, a three-story arc," O'Brien said in an interview with AusGamers (via Eurogamer). "I think there's a lot of scope to take the story in different directions, or maybe tell someone else's story. But certainly for these first couple of games, it's all about Faith. It's all about her experience in the world."

At his early stage, he obviously wasn't especially forthcoming with details, but did mention that a level editor for the first sequel was in the pipeline.

"Creating a level editor is a skill in itself, and that's a lot of work. And if we do it, we want to make the level editor as easy to use and intuitive as the game is. And that's going to take us quite a lot of time. So that's something we're looking at for the sequel."

While we're waiting for that, the first Mirror's Edge game, starring the nimble Faith and her rad parkour moves, will be out for the PS3 and Xbox 360 next month.

i was hoping that it'll be one neat game with a satisfying and conclusive ending like Portal. Seeing that it's a triology, the ending is probably going to be not as good.

I also groaned.

But oh well. If it ends up being good as a stand alone, we can at least wait and see what the sequels are like - and otherwise ignore them (similar to how I ignore the Matrix sequels)

While I agree about the first games ending most likely being anti-climatic (which I hate), I think it's good news. Mirror's Edge looks awesome, and if it plays how it looks, I'd welcome sequels with open arms. I'm not going to get my hopes up too high, however. We were promised Heavenly Sword would be a trilogy, and look how that turned out icon_cry.gif

I can't remember the last game that declared it would be a trilogy before it was released ever living up to the hype.

This is disappointing.

i just hope this game won't drag on, because at the moment, it is looking a bit like Portal, with all the puzzles and thinking to do. In too much doses, it can be off-putting.

That's dumb.

I'm pretty sure that'll be the case (the game will be short). There's only 9 chapters/levels that can all be replayed to do speed runs (to earn Trophies/Achievements) so I reckon it'll definitely be 5-10 hours at most.

Developers really need to start focusing on their games standing alone, even if they'd like to do a trilogy.

The best trilogies always start with something that feels like it could stand alone. The plot needs to not leave too many holes. The game needs to feel "finished".

Maybe this is what they are doing, but if I get to the end of Mirror's Edge and find that the story is inconclusive as far as I'm concerned the developers failed, at least in the story department.

Make one game. If it takes off and deserves a sequel, then start making more.

Portal is getting a sequel. If the game is good, I don't mind. My one concern is that this is an EA product, but for some reason I trust DICE to do something cool with this one. I've enjoyed all their games so far (the only EA products I've bought).

I also found Assassin's Creed's story to be one of the best stories in any game I've played, despite it being far from concluded.

I don't blame em for it, but shouldn't they wait to see how the first game goes first?

Although do **** want that level editor.

Trilogy Smilogy.

For a game with such a groundswell, set to be a hit with gamers - a sequel is inevitable. Games are not made anymore, franchises are.

I wince whenever I hear this trilogy stuff, mainly because its untrue. George started the trend with Star Wars. There was no grand plan, just a cheeky idea. Lets cut through the marketing BS. Its pleasing to hear that DICE have the scope and ideas to build on something that already looks AMAZING.

If the story suffers for such intent I will be displeased. Open endedness is a cop out. If a smattering of unanswered questions are picked up, expanded on and in-turn pose more questions - we have a holy trinity brewing.

Lets hope this doesn't turn out as ME pt I, II and III.

I, for one, am glad. Mirror's Edge sits at the top of the pile with Skate 2 and Prince of Persia for games I'm looking forward to... I hope it plays great. And I hope I get to play three damn fine games. I hope.

Trilogies and Franchises have been around a lot longer then Star Wars.

I mean **** look at Lord of the Rings. Started off as just a story about a hobit looking for gold, ended up with the **** of the Samarilian.

Sooooo this is going to be a 5-10 hour adventure with EA purposely cutting up the intended game in order to maximise the profits?

What? They've always said it's going to be a short game.

i realise this is mostly subjective, but:
Mass Effect? (used the "A New Hope" method of starting a trilogy. if it had flopped, it's self contained enough that people who did enjoy it won't be p***ed off.)
Assassin's Creed? (used the more controversial "cliffhanger" ending, which just simply p***es people off.)
Beyond Good and Evil (likewise cliffhanger, but didn't initially look like it'd get finished.)

or do you mean once the trilogy was completed?
in which case, i can't think of any true trilogies off the top of my head.
Metal Gear Solid is probably the closest, but that allegedly didn't go into trilogy (in 4 parts) mode until after MGS1 was completed. (supposedly 2 was written with 3 and 4 in mind, but also kept contained enough that they needn't have continued, if sales let them down.)

however, i agree mostly with the sentiments expressed here.
even if a game is developed with the intention of creating a trilogy (or whatever), i'd prefer if the games were still self-contained. at least for the first part.

Trilogy = Bad/Unfinished story = saved myself $100.

Kind of like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy, yeah Trilogies suck.

Way to jump to conclusions.

This post makes good sense. Games developed with sequels or trilogies in mind either show the level of confidence in the producer, or their level of ego (Dyack?). It's a fine line.

I'm hoping Mass Effect forms an episodic trilogy, where each story is self contained, while remaining in the same timeline (much like the Metal Gear Solid series).

im not against them thinking ahead for the game, but i kinda would of liked it to be a secret until after the game had been released. i dont know why, but yeh i really dont know where im going with this.....

Technically LotR, and I believe Hitchhikers Guide (could have just been the tv show), had six parts each.

Metal Gear Solid was the third game in the series anyway. Metal Gear was meant to be a stand alone game, but Kojima made a sequal to it after some other guys butchered it (Snakes Revenge, ugh) then revived the series 8 years later, but if the series had ended anywhere between there the stories would've been conclusive enough to be called the end to the series.
