NBA 2K9 Preview

360 Preview | Giving you back your b-b-bounce?
NBA 2K9 arrives from 2K Sports on October 10th, and by all accounts look set to maintain the standard of accuracy and realism the series is known for, but it's the host of new features which Visual Concepts has managed to cram into this year's release which has us most excited by the prospect of bouncing our balls again.

For example, in a rather interesting divergence from the usual structure of online play in sports games, NBA 2K9 allows full five-on-five competition over Xbox Live or the PlayStation Network. Of course, this means that each player is restricted to a single avatar and must co-ordinate and co-operate with other players to achieve victory and play effectively.

There's got to be more to life than throwing balls through hoops...Nah.

In accordance with the series' mandate for realism and authenticity, players will also be able to quickly push past opponents who seek to block them, with both actions being completely controlled by the player. In addition, players can even grab hold of the jersey of the player trying to push past, slowing them down and denying their evasion. Do this repeatedly, however, and the referee will call foul and blow his whistle in your sweat-soaked face.

The reward for playing well, co-ordinating your team mates, and conducting yourself in a sportsman-like manner is manifested in the form of a 'Team 2K' rating, which will proudly (or shamefully) announce to the online community your integrity, or lack thereof.

That is one impressive dome.

In addition to these promising new features, Visual Concepts and 2K Sports have also implemented new ways to share customised players and interact online. Titled '2K Share', the mode will allow gamers to download, upload, and rate the created players that they browse online, derived from the reliably-thorough list of options, settings, and sliding bars the 2K franchises are known for.

Ultimately, those customised characters will look quite impressive, with nicely-detailed models sporting impressive textures and eerily-convincing facial feature animation. The crowds too have seen an overhaul, and now react with visibly more realism than any prior game in the series. The lighting engine is robust, and overall the game satisfies with respect to all the small details which sell the simulation. For graphics-junkies, NBA 2K9 should more than satisfy, and on the audio-side of things the title will be no slouch, featuring the contributions of reporter Cheryl Miller, analyst Clark Kellogg, and Kevin Harlan providing the 'colour commentary' (identities who might actually be familiar to some...possibly).

Aside from the exciting prospect of enhanced online features and improved presentation, basketball fans can also look forward to the reliable mainstay features of the series, including the in-depth Franchise Mode which has itself been the subject of refinements and added functionality - and it is this overall attention to detail and fleshing out of features that should make NBA 2K9 an enticing prospect for basketball afficionados when it sees release in just a couple of weeks.
Overall:
NBA 2K9 does not appear to be a reinvention - but looks to be a fleshed-out and refined iteration of a reliable franchise. It's unlikely to convert people who shy away from sports sims, but fans should not be disappointed.

Eh...looks like shiny version of the last generation franchise. No thanks.

It's hella improved over 2k8. You need to look up some comparison pictures of players. They got a new 5 console vs 5 console mode. You can even use dirty tactics like grabbing onto another players jersey to slow them down (only if you mange to not get caught by the refs or else it's a foul, as mentioned in the article). Just like players do in real life. icon_smile.gif

Also, no mention of the '2k Insider'? It's similar to Live's DNA 365 feature but instead of constantly changing habits and confusing everyone on a daily basis, it will be to boost or lower stats for players who CONSISTENTLY play to a certain level. So if a rookie who's rated 80 overall etc starts playing like Jordan for most of the season, they will boost his ratings rather than basing his performance from a few good games or if he's a total bust and ends up playing like Kwame Brown through the season you will see his ratings go down significantly. So it will be an "update when necessary" type of thing. The 2k Insider will have his own website, blog and everything and will actually listen to what people have to say about ratings or whatever.

The best part about this is that they will CHANGE and ADD new animation packages to players through the season. So if a player starts dunking like Vince Carter in his prime, they will give him a more fancy dunk package. If a player starts playing like a Globetrotter, they will give him some new ball handling animations (I just realized how not-so-PG that line was). I mean, you can already change dunk packages, sig styles, basically everything for OFFLINE play, but I was referring to ONLINE play, where you can't change a bum player rated 65 to a 97.

I swear, no offense to PALGN but maybe I should have typed this article. I've been checking out everything to do with this game for a LONG time.

P.S. I'm joking about that last part - I'd be too lazy.

Cheers for the info.

That video looks awesome! The actual gameplay is looking more and more like a real basketball game with each iteration. I played 2k8 to death and am eagerly awaiting this one

Oh, there are plenty of videos... watch this one below, I cream myself over the highlights footage at the end of quarters and during dead balls, where they highlight a player. Like if someone has 10 assists, they'll comment on it and start showing some of their assists in a highlight reel during the dead ball (out of bounds etc).

Also this one... check at 3:00, Wade shows a cool falling animation when he gets fouled. Seems like they have the commentary turned off for this video.

I wasn't going to go for the game this year, but it is sounding mighty good. Might have to see how I'm going with games come NBA season.

If only the 2K series had the FIBA rosters that NBA live has. That's the only other reason why I'm even considering buying NBA Live as well this year.

I am so going to buy this, I have always found the 2K series of the NBA to be superior to that of the EA version being NBA Live.

However I did download and play NBA Live 09 demo and found that to be quite promising.

This video's already got enhanced players. There's no way Zach Randolph can block ANYTHING

Nice joke but jokes aside, Zach is one of the worst shot blocking power forwards ever (I would have said defense if defensive rebounding wasn't counted) but the shot he blocked was a horrible overambitious shot by Devin Harris that deserved to be blocked by anyone. icon_smile.gif

Anywho, I played the demo which is pretty good. The jaggedness of the PS3 version is a bit of a worry, I hope they do/did something to smooth it out for PS3 users though I changed my TV settings to ease the pain (still looks better than Live 09 overall IMO). The difficulty setting would have been set to easy, so it's not too hard to score but the game is looking good and does play slightly different to 2k8 even though overall it's roughly the same game.

They have added a ton of new animations for when people foul, for when people block, for when people steal... now you can't suddenly stop and swipe if you're running with the aggressive modifier (turbo) button down, instead you do a running swipe. They've also seemed to quicken the move for drawing charges in most instances.

It's looking good.

On a side note, did anyone catch that NBA Live 09 is forcing people to pay for their Dynamic DNA service if you buy the game used or if you rent it out? Apparently you need a code to use the feature. They've packaged it in as a little print-out inside the case. So if you don't have it, you have to pay $20 USD to use the service. Supposedly EA is doing this to stamp out piracy but I'm sure it's just to boost their sales as it would make a new copy of the game cheaper than a used copy (considering that people want to use the feature, which I'm sure all people playing online would). Still, the NBA Live 09 demo didn't impress me enough to buy it anyways. 2k have stated they have no intention to make people pay for any of their online service in 2k9.

can anyone explain to me why the presentation of the starting 5's never seems to make its way into a game?
I don't know but I can't say that I've thoroughly enjoyed it in any games that have previously tried it. They've either come off really boring or just nothing like in real life.

I think its in major part to not having all or any of the real life PA announcers to make it sound truly realistic. Live 09 has the same old pathetic announcer as they did 10 years ago, 2k9 has a few that sound authentic to real life but still miss out on a lot.

I really hope 2k added it in for playoff games at least, I know they said that the championship celebration is much longer now than in previous games and is meant to be something to look forward to.

Brought the game yesterday. I haven't played a basketball game sine NBA 2K7 so I'm a little so in being able to do what I want. All the post moves seem alot harder. Also, when a 7-footer stands next to the basket, I expect him to dunk, but most of the time they lay it in, defense or not.

There are a lot of problems with 2k9, though they are supposedly patchable as a developer was on the 2k site earlier today to take questions and comments. It's mostly on the online side of things and a lot has to do with server stress.

Though, personally I would never buy the PAL version unless it was unavoidable. They never patched 2k8 for PAL gamers (or if they did, it was many many months later when it was too late) when they patched the NTSC versions within a month or so of release. Lucky I always buy the NTSC version.

I would be very scared right now to own a PAL copy of this game, who knows if they'll ever release a patch for this years PAL release. Still, the game itself is meant to be really good.
