Gears and Fable sequels get Collector's Editions

360 News | Microsoft entices with additional goodies.
As part of its media conference at E3, Microsoft dated two of its upcoming blockbusters, Fable II and Gears of War 2. Peter Molyneux's RPG will be landing on store shelves in October and Epic's third-person shooter will be available worldwide on November 7. In addition to the standard versions, fans will be able to purchase Collector's Editions of both Fable II and Gears of War 2.

The Fable II Collector's Edition will retail for $119.95, and come with a bonus DVD featuring developer diaries, a making-of video, concept art viewer and music from the soundtrack. The package will also include a Hobbe figure, five printed Fable II cards, a token card for the Archon Demon Door DLC and a trial card for Xbox LIVE.

Like the first Gears Limited Edition, the Gears of War 2 LE will come in a steel book case. The Gears 2 Limited Edition will include a hardbound book titled Beneath the Surface: An Inside Look at Gears of War 2, with a foreword written by Design Director Cliff Bleszinski, concept art and character profiles. The Limited Edition will also come with a bonus DVD featuring making-of videos and audio commentary, a Dominic and Maria keepsake photo and Xbox LIVE code to unlock a gold-plated Lancer Assault Rifle for multiplayer matches.

While you wait to battle the Locust all over again, head over to our recent Gears of War 2 preview.

I think I'll just stick with the regular edition of Gears 2 (not even sure if I'm getting Fable 2, nothing has impressed me about that game yet). The most enticing thing is the gold plated Lancer, and I'm not paying extra for that.

Does anyone know if Gears 2 will come with a 48 hour trial for Live? I won't pay for Live, but it would be nice to have a weekend on the multiplayer.

I'm definitely getting the limited edition of Fable 2 and might also get the Gears 2 limited edition depending on how much money I have at the time. The hardcover book is quite interesting to me.

The GoW2 special edition just sounds like your boring, basic SE, but the Fable 2 one sounds a little better, not the best though. I wish special editions were actually SPECIAL, not with a couple of movies off the internet.

Yeah, I agree. I mean, the steel case quite frankly is getting old.

Will get both no doubt since its usualy on a $10 or so difference from the standard edition, after price match of course.

oh and you are missing the S on Cliffy B's surname. Its Bleszinski.

I can easily afford Live, but I don't think it is worth it. I buy most of my games for PS3 and play them online for free. There are only one or two 360 exclusive online games (mainly Gears 2) that I care about, and I'm not buying a year subscription over one game.

I'm a sucker for tins so I'll probbably get both.

Them LEs seem pretty enticing. Added to the fact their sequels to some great games seems worth it for me.

chill man, just jokes. But im tellin ya since theyre both microsoft games theyll come with 1 month gold.
Lost odyssey did and its not even a multiplayer game. i lived like a half a year off of those free months.

I'm really liking the sound of the Fable 2 CE because of the Hobbe figure, its always great when they give something else besides a DVD/CD in a collectors edition.. Bioshock has to be my favourite so far - I love my Big Daddy icon_wink.gif Also Gears sounds decent enough to warrant a purchase so I think I'll end up getting both sets at launch.

Are there any games that don't come in a SUPER DUPER SPECIAL EDITION version these days? Its rather ridiculous.

I will definately get Fable 2 Special Edition, but will just get the standard of Gears 2

I cave in to anything that say "special/limited/collectors edition". Hell i even bought the Bad Company tin, all it had was 5 weapons early (that i didn't even use) and some bonus material i didn't even watch...

I'll definitely be getting SE/CEs of Gears 2 and Fable II. Both IPs hold a special place in my gaming heart.

Then I probably have to buy regular editions for my wife, cuz she'll want in on the action on her 360 (crossing fingers she'll be addicted to the JRPGs coming out in a few months) =p

What can I say, I'm a sucker for this stuff. It's not so much a case of 'Is it worth getting the limited edition' as it is 'Is it so bad as to merit avoidance.'

In other words I may as well get whatever the superior release is.

Wait - what happened to the Fable 2 CE coming with the 3 Fable XBL arcade games for free?

Did Aus get shafted again?

I've pre-ordered the standard both games using GAME's June trade-in deals at different stores, and both have stated i would not be able to change it over to the special editions (and pay the difference). I can live with that, especially in Fable's case where its $20 extra, but i still would prefer a tin version over the standard in GOW2's case.

I thought GAME allow you to cancel your preorder, then they credit you your preorder amount to use on something else.

I've done that at GAME (twice) when they had the similar GTA IV pre-order deal, but when i pre-ordered Fable 2 and i asked if i could put it towards a CE pre-order once its announced, they told me the trade-in values would revert back to the standard values of about $10 each if I was to put it on a different 'product'.

Same thing was said to me at the other store where i pre-ordered GoW2. They were actually advertising the CE version at the time, but the deal was only for the Standard version. I asked if I could trade in towards the CE version and then pay the difference in cash then and there but they wouldn't let me.

I can only guess its a new measure put it in place to prevent a certain hindu and other people exploiting their deals icon_redface.gif

do GAME keep a record of the way in which a Preorder is paid? I would think that your preorder just said that you've got it fully paid. Maybe their system is able to flag if a game has be preordered through a trade in promotion.

I know EB Games does not keep a track of whether a preorder deposit was sourced from a trade in promotion.

Maybe it is worth going into your GAME store and asking to check your preorder balance, then asking if you can change it to the Collector's Edition since you've now learnt what is in it, so you've changed your mind.

My GAME receipts just read "Trade-in: $99.95". The receipts they print and keep in their pre-order folders would have the trade details itemised.

Just got back from GAME and pre ordered the CE of Fable 2 for $99.95, its the same price as the standard edition. I asked if the price will go up and he said it might, but cause I pre ordered I will pay $99.95 for it. He also showed me the pack and it looks cool, trading cards, bonus DVD and figurine.
