Microsoft boss says Wii gamers will graduate to 360

360 News | Once the novelty wears off.
Microsoft director of product management for 360 and Live, Aaron Greenberg, has suggested that the Nintendo Wii is mostly just a novelty device for parties, and that gamers will so want to 'graduate' to the Xbox 360.

"Everyone says that eventually the novelty will wear off, right? I think that a lot of the people that are buying that console today are not people that have generally bought consoles in the past, right?" asked Greenberg, in a recent interview with Gamasutra.

"You see they're not buying games on it, right? They're buying it, it's like something they break out when people come over, and it's maybe a fun thing, but it's almost like the same people that buy a karaoke machine, you know? They're not really buying it for games, they're just buying it as a novelty."

In addition, Greenberg doesn't actually see the Wii as a competitor.

"I think for us, we don't really see the Wii as a direct competitor, we actually very much complement the Wii experience. It's obviously clear that we're going head-to-head with the PS3 in this generation. I think what Xbox will be able to do as well as the Wii is grow the market."

Greenberg also praised the Wii, saying that the extra markets they have created will benefit Microsoft in the future, as gamers move onto other consoles.

"In this generation we're seeing record revenues for the US and globally for the business, and we're seeing more people buying and playing games than ever before, and the Wii is definitely part of that. And as they grow that pie, that benefits us too, because those customers are eventually going to want to graduate to an Xbox 360 experience."

Well gee Aaron.. you seem to be spoon feeding the 'cool kids' the social norm these days... you tell us!

Another poor example of trying to make a competitor out as the little guy and saying they are no threat or competition whatsoever..

Bottom line? If the Wii wasn't a threat, it would get absolutely no mention. Till that time, I will gladly allow my foot to "graduate" up Greenberg's ass in response to him stirring the sh*t pot.
This seems to be an EVER increasing trend. PR representatives making BIG faux pas that are alienating their market. Nintendo European VP of sales calling basically all virtual console users 'Geeks and Otaku'. Greenberg from M$ making all kinds of assinine statements. Hell look at virgin internets chief calling for the end of net neturality. It seems that all these big wigs are not in touch with their demographic.

While i did take all these statements with a grain of salt, i was QUITE offended by the fact that they COULD make these statements about THEIR consumers, given that WE provide their income (basically). This from M$ about 'graduating' is again offensive, as it shows little or NO background about who really games. Part of what made the Wii such a great selling console was its appeal to non-typical gamers, ie VERY little kids, women and casual gamers.

This was a factor of Games and Price. To say that these people will want to 'trade-up' to a Wii shows that Greenberg doesnt know SQUAT!

Honestly, who ARE these people?!

i think that rich...commenting on a brand thats been out for many years by someone who is only into there second generation of console...pff microsoft are too full of em selves and need a wake up call...the ridiculous amounts of cash nintendo are making doesnt seem to be getting the message across. come on m$ pull your finger out and realise the wii rocks...games arent all about graphics and shooting. btw i own all the major systems except nes (at the moment) icon_sad.gif and ps3 which im still on the fence about.

I concur. Spielberg's first game is a good one.

Also, just to settle a bet, are there any left-handed people with a 360? If you are, and you do, is the controller uncomfortable? Because i think it's a really right-handed controller.

How is it any more of a right-handed controller than every other controller in existence?

Take the Playstation controller. The Joysticks are lined up, so anyone can use the joysticks. I just think that the 360 controller , with it's "one higher up than the other" Joystick that is mostly used for movement, I just think that it may get a bit uncomfortable for lefties.

im a lefty and it makes no difference to me, its basicaly the same as any other controller and i "graduate" haha w***er from my 360 to ps3 and vice versa easily, but the wii is left hander friendly as it gives you the option. SCORE!!! icon_smile.gif

But are there any games that give you the option to switch movement from the left to the right joystick? I can't think of any, so regardless, you're still using your left thumb to move.

not sure, i have never looked for the option cause i dont feel i need it..all games have movement through the left side of the controller i think??? well on the 360 and ps3 anyway and that is what i have learnt to use...

start a poll and find out how many lefties there are here at palgn and find out what they think....pretty sure they just have to go with it icon_smile.gif

I don't know many "gamers" who only own a Wii to begin with - most of that crowd are friends I wouldn't even come close to calling "gamers."

I think all his points were very valid, i Dont think he was trying to say that 360's were better than wii's, all i thnik he was trying to say that was since wii cater to an almost different market, they have dragged many pepole who have previously not been interested in consoles (such as my sister, she now wants a wii) into the gaming industry. Then after these people play a substancial amount of games, they may well look into getting soemtihng like a 360 which caters for different games etc etc. Everything he said made perfect sense and things have been sidetracked really... and i dont thnik this applies to 'gamers' or whatever , i think this is just people in general

As i said earlier, i TOTALLY agree with this. But it shows a real lack of industry insight for him to be saying they will 'graduate' to the 360. All the markets the big N has tapped are the kind that would never have bought a console to begin with ie little kids, families, women, fitness nuts etc. To talk about 'moving up' is unrealistic and stupid.

Guy doesnt know squat and thats offensive. He shouldnt be talking for 'us' as gamers & should get out and see the real world

I disagree, the majority of Wii owners are familliar with the Playstation brand. Many Wii owners "graduated" from the PS2. Because of this I reckon when the PS3 gets cheaper, around $400, then we'll see a "graduation" to the Playstation 3. Simply because its got the name playstation branded on it.

I can see the logic behind that, as they get to use their previous library. I wouldnt say the playstation brand actually carries that much with these people. Especially based on cost of console and peripherals (see Dual Shock 3). These people only buy one console per generation as they are really a casual market. Hardcore gamers own 2 or all of the current gen consoles.

What these marketing people are missing is that the whole market isnt traditional hardcore or even casual gamers any more. We have just people who are just strait up casual users. These people are normally attracted to the cheaptes and easiests console. PS2 was the same last gen, cheap and ubiquitous console (it was everywhere), cheap and expansive game library and a sort of 'following'. This is what the Wii has tapped this generation.

Look at the number of cheap games for Wii compared to PS3 and 360. Look at what console 'non gamers' talk about. Look at install base, look at whats on the kiddies wish lists because their mates have it. If Nintendo drop their prices there install base will climb further as even more people will buy in.

The reason the install base isnt as big now is simply the way they handled manufacture, the lost the hype because they sold out. They are now pushing Wii fit and the same thing is happening. Gaming as a whole has changed. There are now two camps. Us, the hardcore, the TRUE gamers and casual USERS, who crack out the Wii fit or have singstar/guitar hero at a party.

Well I pretty much agree with what he's saying, I myself bought a Wii pretty much for the novelty of it when it was released, had fun with Wii sports for a while, but after that it was nothing but trash games being released. Then I bought an HDTV and an Xbox 360 and the Wii looked awful by comparison so I eventually sold it and haven't really looked back. Probably the only game I actually want to play on Wii is Super Mario Galaxy but it's hardly worth having a 400 dollar console for a single game.

Actually, as a long-time gamer whose Wii is the only next-gen console I own, I've got to say that I've noticed a couple of my Wii-owning friends contemplating the X360. I've thought about it as well, but not seriously. A big point he's missing here is that the Wii is great for gamers who don't have much time on their hands (the DS is even better). If I was ten years younger I'd be all over the X360, but it's the casual accessibility that made the Wii the realistic choice, and the X360 a kind of "If I didn't have more important things to do" fantasy.

when the wii first came out i was thinking it would be a novelty but although i havent bought one myself (i have a 360) i think it may have been a better choice because i have had soooo many problems with the 360. Also, wii owners, dont get a 360! If anything, get a PS3!
