GTA IV sells 8.5 million

360 News | That's a lot of copies in about six weeks.
According to Kotaku, Take-Two has revealed that they have sold 8.5 million units of Grand Theft Auto IV since the game's release on April 29, 2008.

In its first week, GTA IV sold 6 million units, which results in $500 million of net sales. Take-Two obviously expects the sales to continue, as they have shipped 11 million units to retailers. We love it when they provide shipped and sold data. With 8.5 million sales already notched up, Grand Theft Auto IV is one of the most successful game releases of recent times.

Thats what good marketing and hype can get you. Great sales. Not to say GTA4 isn't good, but it was most certainly overhyped and didnt deserve the perfect scores it got from sites like IGN and Gamespot.

Sadly even better games like MGS4 will not sell anyway near that amount of copies.

Just out of interest, who hold the sales records, and what are they?

It's certainly no surprise that GTA4 has done this well though. In the famous words of Zoolander, Rockstar is "so hot right now that it could take two poops, wrap them up in tin foil, put fishhooks on the end, and sell then to Queen Elizabeth as earrings."

Not much of a suprise, no, but for a not-as-brilliant-as-they-claimed game it's fairly impressive. Darn hype.

Well GTA IV definitely sold like hotcakes. I wonder how long it'll be before GTA V is in the works, or will they go to another substory after the 2 episodic content the 360.

IMO, its an overhyped game. They sacrificed fun for realism. Where's my flying car cheats and my going around being stupid? Its more of a sim than anything else now.

The dialogue in this game kinda goes like this: (From Kotaku)

Quote
Niko: Woe is me. Violence is all I've known my entire life. I just want to get a job, settle down and work!

Random gangster: Kill this guy for me

Niko: Will I get MAHNEY?

Random gangster: Sure

*later on*

Niko: The violence, it never ends

Random, yet different gangster: Kill this gu--

Niko: Will there be MAHNEY

Random, yet different gangster: Sure thing

Niko: I will sort this problem out for you

*Much later on, Niko is a millionaire*

Niko: I need the MAHNEY. Give it to me
Not saying its a bad game, just saying it's too hyped.

You kidding taco? The story has been great for me atleast so far, especially some of the decisions I have had to make have been great, really makes you think about who is the darker shade of gray thing. Of course you also may be tempted to sway one side for financial reasons, but I don't care much about money in this game.

I agree it doesn't deserve a perfect score, but I think it's sold a lot of copies based on its own merits. I'm really enjoying it myself and I didn't even like GTA3 at all.

I think it had TOO many elements to be quite honest, like the whole girlfriend thing (Though the sex scenes made me laugh), the whole internet business, tv shows etc.

I wanted a game where I could just run around a city and do ****, knowing that there was nothing else that I could or would want to do, except shoot people and speed in a cop car from 15 agents.

It's interesting I don't really go back to GTA4 much, though I still go nuts on GTA2. Killing rampage's don't seem to fit into the GTA4 universe, and even when you do go a little crazy it doesn't feel exhilarating. Hell, if it weren't for multiplayer I don't think I'd ever go back to playing GTA4.

I don't think that this game has sold too much, it's just that some people seem bitter that other great (or better) games haven't sold as well as they should have.

Whichever way you look at it (overhyped, hype-justified)most people with very different gaming tastes would agree that it's a strong contendor for game of the year and was a quality polished game.
