Lots of new Gears of War 2 multiplayer info

360 News | Respawning characters and golf club action.
A Gears of War 2 preview in the upcoming X360 Magazine has uncovered a host of juicy little tidbits regarding the game's multiplayer component.

The most intriguing piece of information is that there will be multiplayer modes which feature respawning - however, these will play second fiddle to the traditional kill-and-you're-out approach of the first game.

Matches will be bigger than last time around, with ten person five versus five gameplay available. A dozen or so maps (including an aged Gridlock) will be initially available on release, though more will be sure to follow.

Game modes include Guardian, Wingman and Meatflag. Guardian is an altered form of assassin from the first game, where team member's will be able to respawn as much as they need to, provided their team leader isn't dead. Wingman lets two player's control one character - confusing. The intriguing Meatflag mode is a capture the flag type deal, except that the flag is a computer player who will roam around the map, killing all and sundry. Capturing the Meatflag involves downing him, then dragging him back to your team's base as a meatshield. Respawning will also be present here.

Since you're probably wondering what a meatshield is, it's a brand new move in the game that allows players to use downed enemies as a - get this - shield. A bit gory, you might say. When equipped with a meatshield, a player can only use a pistol, and will only be able to survive so many bullets before they start taking damage. There will also be some other moves you can perform on a downed enemy, including a melee attack depending on your equipped weapon (the Longshot will be used as a golf club, for instance) and a vicious face punch.

Players will now have the option to choose their spawning weapon, be it the Lancer or the altered Hammerburst. New weapons include the Scorcher flamethrower and Medusa, a new locust pistol. Grenades have been changed too, enabling players to use them to make proximity mines, while smoke grenades can stun any nearby enemies. Poison gas grenades are - shockingly - poisonous. Chainsaw duels are another new addition - get ready to hammer that B button.

Bulletshields will be a new option for the defensive player, which will act as movable cover. They will be indestructible, but players will only be able to fire a pistol when carrying one.

Dead players will be able to take screenshots which can be put online. If you're into that sort of thing.

In a nice little touch, the special edition might also come with an old photograph of Dom's wife. Nothing is guaranteed, mind.

Gears of War 2 is currently 65% complete, with Epic no doubt in overdrive to have it out in time for Christmas.

I really like the new game modes, some cool ideas in there. (Wingman, irritating as it sounds, is a whole new style of gameplay which could be pretty awesome).

Nice nice NICE, while I thought Gears 1 was a competent but not a omg-best-exclusive-evarr game, the multiplayer was sublime so I'm very pumped after reading this.

Screenshots.. awesome. Shame there are no replays but I wasn't even expecting screenshots.

Now all it needs is a 4-player co-op campaign.

Longshot = Sniper

Hammerburst is the automatic weapon similar to the lancer, except it shoots a small round of bullets and then pauses slightly before shooting again... it's used in the campaign a bit, but has to be picked up on certain maps in multiplayer.
