Banjo gameplay to be 80% based on vehicles

360 News | Game set to be rather different from its predecessors.
Speaking in a live chat with several Rare fan sites, Rare's head of design Gregg Mayles has revealed that 80% of gametime in Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts will be spent with vehicles.

"I would say around 80% vehicles, but just a rough guess. Banjo gets in and out of the vehicles all the time, but the travelling is done in the vehicles. A lot of the tasks require Banjo to get out and either do something to the vehicles, put something in the vehicles and so on," commented Mayles.

The head of design was quick to point out that the game will still give players freedom.

"... once you play the game and realise the freedom the vehicles have you will forget that they are vehicles and simply a different way of having abilities, albeit ones that you choose and combine," said Mayles.

Mayles also revealed that he expects some fans will have problems adjusting to the gameplay changes, but he believes the changes are for the best. "I believe they make the old games look limited and very outdated," declared Mayles. "People are always afraid of change. But change for the better is great, which is what I believe this game to be. It's going to take time for people to get it, I know!"

No longer a day 1 purchase from me, I'll need to wait and see what initial reviews are like.. what a shame, this was Rare's chance to really prove they still had the stuff.

I still can't get over how godawful those vehicle designs are.

I revoke my wait and see policy.

I waited

Isn't the point of releasing this sort of information to the media during the game's development to build excitement for the game, essentially a precursor to a fully fledged marketing communications campaign. Rare, it seems, are engaging in a campaign of epic fail.

I've gone from apprehensively hyped for this game to utterly despondent.

People are just upset about the change. Rare has come out and said it so people will learn to accept it. Like the Nintendo Wii. When we first heard it everyone hated the name and wanted it to stay revolution but now it's fine.

I think a lot of people are upset because they're use to Mario doing the same thing for every game. Other than a few different themes the Mario games are all the same. Go to level, get star, repeat several times. That's it.

It's a bold move changing the core gameplay but if it's good then it'll be much better off and seperate it more from "a platformer like Mario".

Still interested. It might not be Banjo like, but meh, the gameplay still looks interesting - if it was a new IP we'd have no problem with it, so I'm still looking forward to it.

No, I'm upset because when I buy a Banjo Kazooie game, I expect a platformer, not a damn vehicle based game.

It's the same type of gameplay but in a vehicle. Some people make it sound like it's 'Banjo Racing' or something.

Still interested. Regardless of it being different to the originals, the things I've seen of the game still look enjoyable.

a lot people here are dissing the game becasue it isn't the same as the old banjo-kazooie

but you know, if you want to diss it by the fact that a vehicle based platformer is a bloody lame idea, then by all means, go ahead icon_biggrin.gif

Where's my pitchfork?

Honestly I had such high hopes for this game, but yet again disappointment. This seems to be the norm when it comes to Rare, once one of my fave 3rd parties reduced to a 2nd rate joke.

I see the outrage ready to burst through the floodgates.

What a dissapointment. Way to dig up your roots and grind them into paste, destroying the winning formula that everyone loved.

This has jumped off my must buy list too, hopefully they put out a demo and prove us all wrong and it's still a fantastic game. I'm happy to now wait and see.

What's this, the 4th topic now, not including 'unnoficial' ones?Ah, but whatever.Funny to see everyone changing their tune.Originally this was a trial and i was the lone juror holding out.Slowly, your all turning icon_lol_old.gif

'it's still a platformer but with vehicles' haha.Enjoy rare telling you what you want rather then listening to what you want.

Well now that my hopes for an immersive cartoony world are dashed, can anyone name any games coming out (especially on 360 or Ps3) that are like the Banjo Kazooie's & Mario 64's of old?

After seeing the gameplay video (not the new trailer) it raised my hopes a fair bit. This isn't supposed to be the banjo we played 10 years ago, they've stated that all along.

BS.

All this news about vehicles and crap has only hit us all in the last few days.

Extremely disappointed. I was hoping that the vehicles would only help to get to the hard to reach places or to minimise travel time to other areas but this is a huge blow to what I was expecting.

None the less, I’m still very interested in the game and despite all the negativity of late, the gameplay could still work and be fun albeit different to the original game.

Alright, I'm man enough to say.... Jibbs, Ugh, I apologize. You were right. I was wrong.

80% using vehicles is just plain insanity. It should be the other way around. Most people shudder at the thought of using vehicles in platformers so why did Rare decide to build an entire game based around this fact! It's almost like they are trying to run their company into the ground on purpose. If they did a simple poll on their website prior to designing the next-gen Banjo, I'm sure the option 'Vehicle based platformer' would have been dead last.

I read Rare are saying that 'Banjo needed to evolve' now. I can't see one reason to support that claim other then some insane producer deciding that platformers are a dead genre.

This is ****, i've just spent the last hour or so looking at upcoming games on all platforms and not only are there no good quality platformers coming out....but I actually couldn't find a single one! Nothing! Nadda!

How ridiculous? Back in the day platformers and shmups were our bread and butter and now all I see are **** shooters.....don't get me wrong I love shooters but I need some cutesy adventures every now and again too!

What a missed opportunity, Rare could've crafted a completely polished platformer of old with absolutely drop dead gorgeous worlds to explore but instead we get **** lego coconut-collectathon with retard the bear and dodo the bird! I wanna know the point or goal of this game? Why do they need to collect this ****? Is it to help them build vehicles so they can collect more **** and so on and so forth? That sorta **** doesn't interest me at all because there is no realistic goal to the proceedings, I need a journey or an adventure, this sorta mundane **** just seems like work or a chore to me. It would've been much better had they stuck to an original platformer style design/story and had Banjo and Kazooie exploring worlds to find parts to craft vehicles and depending on the parts you found or how you put your vehicle together would determine the path you took to your ultimate goal. Like have vehicles but only make it like 20% of the game. Like you find all these parts and the last few stages has you going to a workshop to put all these parts together and some parts you can only arrange a certain way e.g a propeller on the back will determine a boat type configuration or a propeller on the top would determine a helicopter type configuration, and from that point the rest of the stages would actually be water based or arial based....not completely but most of the stages towards the end you use your vehicle to traverse around, you still have to park it to explore caves or sunken ships or whatever and you store items and stuff in there but the game remains a platformer, the vehicles just help you reach inaccessible areas by destroying walls or going underwater or flying etc. Something with vehicular interaction would just be so much better. I really wanteded a cartoony sort of world where I could just take the game at my own pace, explore green hillsides, spooky graveyards all with next-gen graphics and quite frankly I haven't seen anything like that this gen. Mario Galaxy was awesome but it really needed that extra bump in graphics which the Wii is not capable of just to immerse me that little bit further. Kameo was awesome but changing to all these different characters puts me off a bit, I don't want too much variety I just want refined classics.

Maybe Rare will do another Conker someday, atleast I can hope for that because the chances of another Donkey Kong Country or Banjoe Kazooie classic seem all but dead.

This reminds me of how a big part of Jak 3 was vehicle based. It was by far the worst of the series.

I've only played the 1st one but this sounds quite ridiculous.
