Official Banjo-Kazooie 3 plot, gameplay detailed

360 News | It really does sound rather unique.
After much speculation following the recently leaked screens and game details for Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Microsoft and Rare have issued a press release this morning explaining the plot and gameplay mechanics.

According to the press release, the game starts off by introducing The Lord of the Games (otherwise known as LOG), a being who claims to have created every game in existence. Having grown tired of the squabbling between Banjo and Gruntilda, LOG one day arranges for the arch-rivals to have a showdown, with the victor winning the deed to Spiral Mountain. Being the creator of all games, LOG builds different worlds to hold the contest’s challenges in, and now Banjo must complete them while Gruntilda tries to stop him.

As we reported yesterday, in the game players will need to build their own vehicles to travel across land, sea and air. Apparently, this will also give Banjo new abilities to progress through the game, so instead of learning a new skill at a pre-determined point, the player will have complete control of when, how and what they learn. This also plays a crucial part in LOG’s challenges, as while there will only be one goal, your choice of vehicle and tactics will decide how you accomplish it.

In total, there will be around 100 different vehicle parts to collect, which range from engines and wheels, to springs and egg guns. Players will be able to fashion the parts into vehicles at Mumbo’s Motors, where there are a variety of options that will let them create anything from simple trucks to flying saucers. If you’re not keen on this feature and want to dive straight into the action, there will also be a range of pre-built models available for purchase, via musical notes which now serve as the game’s currency.

In case you’re wondering if this is a platform game, Rare have made it clear there will be lots of puzzles and exploration involved. However, they seemed to have focused on the vehicle and customisation elements of the game. Interestingly, it was also mentioned that there will be online and local cooperative and competitive multiplayer, but it appears it will be in the form of side challenges rather than the main game.

Finally, a few returning characters will be Mumbo Jumbo, Bottles, Captain Blubber and the Jinjos, while newcomers will include Trophy Thomas, Piddles and the Gruntbots, Gruntilda’s mechanical army. Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts is expected to be released this year, around the Christmas holiday period.

For a platformer, the amount of focus on this vehcile stuff is troubling.

'it really does sound rather unique'

lol nice, i think if the rare exec went onto to say 'don't buy this game, it will be terrible and is nothing like the banjo you know and love' you would still put a positive spin on it and the forum community at large would still say things like 'i have faith in rare!'

It's over guys. Why must modern day platformers have tacked on features like vehicles and weapons and magic? The original banjo was such a breath of fresh air on the platformer scene at the time, and that's a big call because everyone and his dog was releasing a platformer at the time.

All we ever wanted was banjo+super pretty gfx and god forbid some platformer genre innovations. This 'wacky' mix of vehicles and spare parts and dumb **** is all filler junk, rare should have trialed that crap with a new IP, instead they've taken the beloved banjo franchise and done this to it.All the people still saying 'don't over-react, she'll be right, trust rare yaddda yadda' are just trying to ignore the elephant in the room.

I concur. This vehicle stuff customization stuff sounds like a mild distraction, but really BK was expected to be M$' answer to Galaxy. it clearly will not be. Anyone who's played a platformer knows vehicles and other types of gameplay from platforming are more of a hindrance then anything.
I'm a lot more disappointed now then I was before. Rare has fallen on it's own sword yet again.

Out of curiosity, what did everybody think of the introduction of vehicles into the Jak series?

I don't think it breaks a platformer at all. Vehicles themselves sure do look like rubbish, though.

3 Banjo articles in 3 days? pretty confusing (and irritating), Palgn. I can never remember where the conversations have left off.

I'll admit I'm a bit worried about this, but best wait and see, it better still be banjo...

What happened there? icon_confused.gif Are they trying to minimise the damage the vehicles are doing now?

That's why this article is marked 'official.' It's not uncommon for leaked material to have a few inaccuracies.

Most people arn't saying to trust rare, just to wait untill more then a couple of screens and some vague details are released. If they start releasing trailers that are nothing but racing and **** then sure. But for the lack of details we have now claiming that the game is **** is just a little premature.

Nice work pointing out the Jak series, the vehicle additions actually added a fair bit to the game. I remember doing all those races across water and mowing down enemies and they were alot of fun.

But like you say the vehicles in this new BK are looking pretty rubbish. Hopefully they wont destroy the main gameplay elements of the game.

Regardless I'll be picking this up just to find out.

The official trailer is about 90% vehicle action.

That must have been the wrong link. I didn't see a Banjo-Kazooie game there icon_eh.gif

WTF, that trailer was terrible. What have they done to Banjo Kazooie icon_sad.gif

I liked the trailer, sure it's nothing like the original game. But for anyone who's never played a Banjo Kazooie game before it looks like it could fun. Cause you know, the game is actually aimed at kids as opposed to die hard Rare fans who'll be pretty much in their 20s now.

I didn't mind them as much as most people did. They did feel rather unnecessary in Jak 2, but they seemed to fit OK in Jak 3. Don't ask how, it's been years since I last played... But yeah, I really didn't feel they detracted from the game at all.

Banjo 3 on the other hand seems to be going a completely different route to the Jak games. In J&D, the vehicles were basically tools you used to get from point A to B. Judging by that awful trailer, vehicles in Banjo 3 are going to play a much larger role. For one thing, you actually create them, à la the gummi ship system in Kingdom Hearts. And then it seems you're forced to use them to perform all kinds of activities... oh boy. This just keeps getting better and better.

Wow, i tried to not post again in a banjo thread and come off all 'negative nancy'......but i just saw the trailer. Wow..........speechless.

The abundance of vehicles, the HUGE maps(which are a bad thing, they pretty much confirm you'll be playing the majority of the game in some sort of vehicle simply to traverse the maps/levels), the cheesy rock midi playing in the background, the lack of anything remotely banjo-esque(i think i saw one music note and besides the intro tune NO indication of banjo's unique sfx or music are to be heard).....wow.

I honestly can't see how this could get ANY worse.Maybe if we see a screeny of banjo in a white hood lynching a minority then maybe.....but failing that this is ground floor, bargain bin, appealing to the masses(ooh vehicle and explosions+rock music=radicool LOLZ!) junk.I think i'll be door knocking soon collecting on the many bets i made that banjo would turn out bad; i'll be starting with you dances.Don't pull the curtains and hide under the couch, i know your in there.

icon_eek.gif Is the hate justified yet? I wonder if Nintendo will have something to say about that 8 bit Mario?

nikack: The problem with it being nothing like the original games is that it's part of a series. If this was a new IP, no worries. But for all the fans of the previous Banjo Kazooie games, they're basically trashing it. Unhappy fans is not what you want, and I for one am disgusted. Any hope of me getting a 360 just went out the window.

Gameplay Footage

I don't mind the look of it so far from what little we've seen, though a little more nostalgia would have been nice, Banjo's panting noise is awesome.

Though it's very different to the original Banjo's, I'll still give it a go because tbh it looks pretty enjoyable.

I was a HUGE fan of the original BK games on N64, played them like a religion, but that doesn't mean I'm going to disregard this game as an instant failure.

I'm not giving Rare a chance but more or less the game. Rare already put a smile on my face with Viva Pinata, and Kameo as well though a bit less. Don't see how this one wouldn't, even if it is so different from the originals.

That gameplay footage is slightly less awful looking.
But its gonna take some getting use to. I'm officially going to quit
my bitching and back off my reaction until its actually out.

That gameplay vid wasn't too bad actually. It does a much better job of selling the concept than the trailer did.

I guess I'm going to have to reserve final judgment until I actually get some hands on with the game... which would make perfect sense. Time to wait on that demo.

But the reason the majority of us loved the Banjo series so much is because it was like playing Mario but with an adult humour twist. Whilst the platforming side was arguably kiddy, visiting a character called Pawno (amongst numerous other things) was not.

Yes I'm aware of that. But look at movies aimed at kids, there are always adult humour twists in them, it makes easier for parents to go see them. It's similar for video games, as a parent you're supposed to be keeping an eye on what your kids are playing. The more aged humour is there to keep the parents amused and maybe might get them to play the game. Banjo Kazooie was a kids games when it was released and this one will be too, it's just that the original players have grown up.

At least Rare is mixing up the formula a bit, as opposed to just changing the way things are controlled. Sure it's not the same as the original, but if you want that why don't you just go back and play the original? I'm reserving my judgement as to if this game will be good or not when I get my hands on it in some shape or form as opposed to discounting it completely because it looks different and has new things.
