GTA IV sells better on Xbox 360 in Australia

360 News | A win for Microsoft.
Sales of the PlayStation 3 are creeping up to the Xbox 360 hardware sales in Australia, but it seems like software sales for the Xbox 360 are still rather respectable, with sales charts released by GFK revealing that the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV outsold the PlayStation 3 version.

GFK doesn't release exact numbers, so we're not sure whether there was a large gap or not, but with Grand Theft Auto IV selling out around the world, we're sure Rockstar will reveal official Australian sales numbers soon. Our full wrap up of the charts will be up shortly.

Honestly, I'm not surprised. The install base and a lower number of bugs with the game are probably the main reasons for the greater number in sales.

Meanwhile in Europe, the PS3 version has outsold the 360 version by 300,000 units.. Microsoft should have gotten in on that console bundle action instead of wasting millions securing exclusive DLC no one knows about.

I'm a little surprised the 360 version wasn't outsold here as well.. didn't Sony put out a press announcement a few weeks ago saying the PS3 was on the verge of overtaking the 360 here or something?.. I forget.

While not the announcement in question, I do remember this article from a while ago...

Insiders still say that Microsoft is set to role out a Blu ray Xbox with one leading European gaming publisher who has an extremly close relationship with Microsoft telling ChannelNews that his organisation has already been shown a new Xbox console and that Microsoft is still considering a Blu ray drive.
After reading that excerpt.. I don't think you should believe anything from that site.

360 still has a 70,000+ lead here (probably over 100,000 when you count 360s sold this year) so it's not really that surprising the 360 version sold a bit better.

Id like to see totals as while I ordered more in on the 360 for me store I ended up selling as many ps3 copies and still have quite a few 360 units sitting on the shelf.

That's one of the key things you can never take away from the 360, the console sells A LOT of software.

On launch night, we sold at least double the amount of PS3 copies of GTAIV as we did 360 versions.

However, during the first week of release I personally sold many, many more 360 versions.

Interesting.

Wouldn't that be because there are a large group of ps3 owners importing icon_annoyed.gif?

That's because PS3 owners are gamers, while 360 owners are leeches on the system icon_razz.gif

I kid, I kid.

Yea I think cuz a region free, uncensored and cheaper version was much easier to get on the Ps3 that a lot of users would've opted for that.

But the only people really importing as the "hardcore". Most "casual" gamers who probably don't know/don't care about the cuts would of just picked up the game from stores.

higher install base right now and a 'hardcore' gamer demographic makes sense to me, plus the 360 seems to always be a bit of a software monster when it comes to the big releases

I wouldn't say I'm surprised by this, but every place that I visited last week had at least 4-5 360 copies left, whereas I could not find one PS3 copy on the shelves.

It's also outselling the PS3 version in the US.

But larger install base = larger sales. As PS3 sales rise so will GTA4 sales, since many will pick it up along with the system. It's going to have a very high attachment rate.

I wouldn't mind seeing the ages of people who are playing it as well. I saw several copies get sold while I was at EB tonight, all of them were for kids who would be ten at oldest.
