Prototype coming in 2009

360 News | May be more than a year away.
A listing by US retailer Gamestop ignited debate this morning that Sierra's upcoming game, Prototype has been delayed until 2009. It's not unusual for retailers to provide placeholder dates for games, but Sierra has confirmed that this delay is true.

"Sierra Entertainment and Radical Entertainment have made the decision to shift Prototype to launch in 2009," a company spokesperson said. "Since its announcement, Prototype has been regarded by many as groundbreaking and taking the open-world genre in new directions, and in the simplest explanation possible, we need more time to deliver the game the team initially set out to create."

The delay may be a blessing for the multiplayer mode though, "As we've stated previously, Prototype's multiplayer development was never 'off the table' but rather under evaluation and on hold," a spokesperson said to IGN. "Now, with the updated 2009 timing, Prototype multiplayer is still on the table for evaluation, and further details will be revealed down the line."

Hopefully by then, Australia will have R18+ and the game won't be censored here.

Yea wishful thinking (@ r18+ rating)...

Judging by how ambitious the game is this can only be a good thing. Hopefully the end product is very solid cuz this looks awesome imo, like a cross between gta, crackdown and the incredible hulk.

I think they might have considered 2008 was alreay too cluttered for sandbox games. I mean there has alreay been GTA IV, then we still have Saints Row 2, Infamous (although only on PS3 so it wouldn't hurt 360 sales), Mercenaries 2 etc etc. Delaying to 2009 was probably a wise move.

I can't really disagree with this decision, since the latest trailer gave me some doubts as to the gameplay. It was looking far more like DMC or spiderman 3 than I'd hoped (ie - combo moves, stringing attacks together in midair, random "powers" like flying).

I'm all for the sci-fi, but it was starting to cross into the realm of fantasy.

Hopefully the delay will set them back on track to deliver what I am hoping will be GOTY material.

I guess you could say it's still a "prototype" hahahaha

I think we're all wishing for this to happen D:

It'll be nice when it happens though, so that this and every other game in the making doesn't have to be the proverbial square plug in a round hole when going through the OFLC's hoops of fire.

Still sucks that the game is another year off. Better late than unfinished. A repeat of Wind Waker wouldn't be a good thing for a game like this.

This is a bit left field but i reckon that the team got their hands on GTA and knew just how high the bar had been raised. An extra year in produciton and mabye they will come close.

Meh, as long as it takes is fine with me. This sounds like an awesome game, and if rushing it removes multiplayer or some of the coolness from it... it'll just feel rushed.
