GTA IV street date (almost) broken

360 News | Some lucky Aussies get their hands on the title early.
The release of Grand Theft Auto IV on the 29th of April is a large event, for both the industry and Rockstar Games, even though retail copies of the title shipped to stores earlier this week Rockstar Games has enforced a strict street date of the 29th of April.

This hasn't stopped local retailer DVDCrave from shipping out several copies of the title early, with a few lucky Aussies getting their hands on Grand Theft Auto IV today, five days ahead of schedule.

DVDCrave has addressed the error on their front page, making the following statement on their homepage:

Quote:
Due to a shipping error three of our customers might well have received their copies of GTA4 this morning...

Please appreciate that this was an error on our part and that DVDCrave is committed to abiding by the official world wide street date of Tuesday the 29th.

The release of this game is a huge event, so please hang in there until the 29th as you won't be disappointed!

Rockstar Games has also confirmed for us that only a few people got their hands on the title, but we think it's a little more than 3 customers, with several of our forum members confirming they've received the title in the mail today.

PALGN contacted DVDCrave for a comment, but they simply re-iterated the message posted on their home page with no further explanation.

apparently dvd crave could get fined $70000 for every copy that tehy sent out :/ sucks for them.
I think this is very unlikely to be true; they may have breached a supply agreement, but the sanctions for this are more likely to be refused supply in the future. I don't expect that this would be enforced either as All Interactive Distribution seems responsible and they are probably somewhat immune like EB - publishers get pissed off at them, but they're a big customer that they can't afford to lose, so nothing happens.

At least, this is my understanding from operating an independent games retailer in the past.

yerthat is most likely, but i think the 70000 is more of a warning thing, they may prosecute them for 1 or whatever just so they are scared about doing it next time? thats what they did with eb bondi junction with time crisis 4

... i mean even if your not a gamer you would have had to have been living under a rock for the past 10 years to not know what gta was ...
A month ago I would have agreed with this, but a month ago I won a Nintendo DS lite at training for our new product through work, along with four other members in my group. Three out of the four didn't know what a DS was and my jaw dropped... For the last couple of years it's been a little big thing but you've just gotta be running in the right circles to know what's what I guess...

I got my Halo 3 the day before through a pre-order with Dstore and I can imagine the same thing happening with GTA4. They don't want their customers to have to wait for a major release like this and with a public holiday smack bang in the middle I guess delivery times can be chaotic...

I've got my three games ready to trade at JB on Tuesday for my copy!
Can't wait!!! icon_biggrin.gif
