GTA IV street date (almost) broken

360 News | Some lucky Aussies get their hands on the title early.
The release of Grand Theft Auto IV on the 29th of April is a large event, for both the industry and Rockstar Games, even though retail copies of the title shipped to stores earlier this week Rockstar Games has enforced a strict street date of the 29th of April.

This hasn't stopped local retailer DVDCrave from shipping out several copies of the title early, with a few lucky Aussies getting their hands on Grand Theft Auto IV today, five days ahead of schedule.

DVDCrave has addressed the error on their front page, making the following statement on their homepage:

Quote:
Due to a shipping error three of our customers might well have received their copies of GTA4 this morning...

Please appreciate that this was an error on our part and that DVDCrave is committed to abiding by the official world wide street date of Tuesday the 29th.

The release of this game is a huge event, so please hang in there until the 29th as you won't be disappointed!

Rockstar Games has also confirmed for us that only a few people got their hands on the title, but we think it's a little more than 3 customers, with several of our forum members confirming they've received the title in the mail today.

PALGN contacted DVDCrave for a comment, but they simply re-iterated the message posted on their home page with no further explanation.

I feel kinda sorry for DVDCrave. They're probably in for a world of hurt, and all they did was fulfill the wishes of three gamers.

Three. That actually makes me laugh out loud icon_lol.gif

The first thing I thought when I saw this article was "people still use IE?!". *sigh*

Congrats to whoever got it early (I'm waiting till May 1st at Big W anyway when they drop it to $84.. even then, maybe not, I want to actually finish GTA III, VC and SA first).

I'm still shocked at how DVDCrave could get it so wrong - they deal with pre-orders all the time, and they break the street date for GTA IV. Crazy. Considering they've sold out of GTA IV pre-orders and such, and it's the biggest game launch of the year, they would have a nice big stack of copies ready to send out on the 29th.. I just don't see how they could have stuffed up.

There is more where that three came from.It appears(using this forum as an example) anyone who ordered the game as an in stock item(in other words ordered it only a few days ago) have received the game, while others who have had it on preorder have been left waiting.

Now, most of the time dvdcrave keep inexcess of 50+ ciopies for new release titles and if this 'error' occured to people ordering the game as in stock and available......well.I'd wager that's at least 50 happy lil vegemites.

I think it's simply a case of someone uploading the standard edition of gta4 without adding the 'to be released on the 29th' tag and people picking orders being unaware the game was never meant to leave so early.

um ..... yeh, that probably it lol

im still using IE6!

I wouldn't be surprised if DVDcrave intentionally did it - especially seeing as the result of it would have given them massive word of mouth.

btw - good detective work jibbs

DVDcrave have been known to ship games early so that buyers get their copy on release date instead of waiting, I guess they shipped out a little earlier due to the public holiday.

damn anzacs!! but yay anzacs!!

its just DVDcrave taking a risk....but it was going to backfire more then likely one way or another!! either by customers getting the games early or late, with some getting it on the day (or most) ANZAC day just messed it up here in OZ.

Was it just me, or did everyone who saw the photo look straight at the corner to see if the person who took the photo was silly enough to still be logged in >.>?

Why would that be silly? You can't get into trouble for breaching a contract you aren't a party to.

I think it's just more to the fact that the person wished to remain anonymous and that we would all stumble upon their dirty little secret. icon_smile.gif

Makes sense as there seem to be quite a number of lucky people who have GTA IV, and I don't think DVDCrave had that many copies up for order (pre-allocated that is).

Regardless of who the shipping fault was due to hopefully dvdcrave don't suffer for the error too badly... i mean even if your not a gamer you would have had to have been living under a rock for the past 10 years to not know what gta was and with all the hype and advertising all over the place you would think the people responsible for (not) sticking to street dates would realise the importance of this title.
all i can say is someones definitely going to get the sack over this! icon_smile.gif

I don't mind waiting for the proper street date, but I gotta tell you that it's a bitter pill to swallow when you have the thing in your hand and the manager realises what the sales assistant is doing and snatches it away mid transaction. icon_sad.gif

Oh no! Tell me that didn't really happen! That is almost too painful to imagine.

If that had happened to me, I'd have had to be dragged out of the store kicking and screaming, 'I'll be back! I'LL BE BACK!!!'.

On Tuesday I'd imagine.

I'm fairly sure that dStore uses All Interactive Distribution for their fulfilment as well, so that seems to be the common link between them and DVDCrave.
