Grand Theft Auto OFLC report out

360 News | A run down of the mature rated content in GTA IV.
Tipster Mick M has sent through a copy of the Australian OFLC report for Grand Theft Auto IV. Rockstar still hasn't confirmed what exactly has been removed from the Australian version of the game, but the report does indicate a little bit about what IS in Grand Theft Auto IV.

There are some spoilers in the report, as well as some references to coarse language, so those with a faint heart or those who don't want to know a little bit about some of the extra details of Grand Theft Auto IV should look away now. The first part of the report describes some of the violence to be found in Grand Theft Auto IV.

Quote:

VIOLENCE

Violence is relatively frequent and strong in playing impact.

During the game, the player (as lead character Niko Bellic) is required to undertake various missions, mostly involving criminal activity, in order to develop contacts, make money and protect his cousin Roman. These include pick-ups and drop-offs, killing / protecting various people, stealing, racing, chasing, eating, drinking, going out and dating. A number of tasks involve drugs (for example retrieving a stash of cocaine for a dealer) and violence (for example, rescuing Roman from a kidnapper).

Violence includes hand to hand combat (basic punching and kicking) and more regularly involves use of various weapons. These include knives, baseball bats, a nightstick, pistols, machine guns, shot guns, rifles, grenades and rocket launchers. The player is able to use these weapons to inflict injury on other participants which results in frequent blood spray. Blood spray occurs as victims are attacked and is also depicted on objects such as floors and walls. Blood pooling occurs under bodies that are shot at after death however no post mortem damage (such as decapitation or dismemberment) is possible. These is also infrequent blood splatter on the camera lens as the player manoeuvres their way through missions involving killing.

A less frequent example of violence includes the ability of the player to set an enemy alight causing them to burn. The victim is shown flailing and on fire before they fall to the ground. Bodies remain as long as the player lingers in a particular scene, however after this, they disappear.

As the violence is relatively frequent, causing blood spray and injury detail, the impact is strong.

The report then goes on to describe some of the language in Grand Theft Auto IV. We censored out some of the more mature language.

Quote:

LANGUAGE

Coarse language is frequent. Aggressive and/or strong coarse language is infrequent.

During the game play the characters are heard to use "f*ck" language, primarily in a naturalistic tone but occasionally in an aggressive manner. This, coupled with the infrequent use of the word "c*nt" (as well as some visual use written on a strip club wall) creates an impact which is strong.

The report then goes on to elaborate on other matters regarding Grand Theft Auto IV.

Quote:

OTHER MATTERS CONSIDERED

In the majority view of the board the game contains drug and sexual references, which although moderate in impact, warrant flagging at the MA15+ classification.

These include a cut scene (with no player interaction) where a drug dealer is depicted implicity, then explicitly, snorting lines of white powder (implied to be cocaine) from a table and the involvement of Niko in various missions dealing with drugs.

Further, there are sexual references which require flagging at the MA15+ classification. These include a cut scene at the beginning of the game depicting a woman in lingerie whipping a man in his underwear, tied to a bed and the general ability of the player to go on 'dates' and have sex with a 'girlfriend', to pick up a prostitute and have sex with her and the ability to attend a strip club and pay for a lap dance.

This part of the report confirms players will be able to pick up prostitutes in the game.

Thanks again to Mick M for the report.

I'm guessing it was drink driving that was cut then?

Edit: Wait, the report says drinking is in the game. What the **** did they cut?
didnt think of that oh noooo hope not.

Wait, cut scene as in a sequence with no player involvement to advance the story etc or cut scene as in they cut it from the AU release?

cut scene with no player involvement.

Well, Blood, Alcohol, Prostitution, are all confirmed, giving strength to the rumoured scene deletion, but Take 2 denied that today:

They confirmed that the statement currently circulating is not correct, and any rumours that have come from it are just that - rumours.

Hold on, so what was said about the uh, weapon insertion cutscene being removed is untrue?
Supposedly yeah, though the scene was discussed prior to the rumour about it being removed from our version of GTA IV, so I'd find it hard to believe that it would get through nder an MA rating... icon_confused.gif

Guess we'll find out soon enough.

ahh man it sounds like not much could of been cut then! im really hoping its just a cutscene now.

AWWWW They must of cut out being able to play as Mitch and Benno from palgn icon_sad.gif .

Must have been something really graphic in nature then... That transcript seems pretty full on for MA15+

It seems like everything I thought would be cut has actually made it through so it's hard to imagine what's missing. It also looking like all the gameplay made it through intact which is comforting to know.

If Take2 is saying the earlier 'gun in the ass' rumour is false, then my only guess is that it's a cutscene of some other nature. The curiosity is killing me but I'm thinking we won't know for sure until someone does a comparison in some unofficial capacity. And that won't be until after it's release.

Sounds like its not as bad as we all first thought?

Lol, I can see it now.

*Niko leaves the pub drunk, reaches for car door handle only to find it wont budge*
"I'm afraid I can't let you do that, Niko"
"Who are you?"
"Why Niko, don't you recognise your own conscience? I'm here to teach you that drink driving is BAD"
*Niko blows his brains out and starts out sober at a hospital*

They will allow drinking, but not driving, in an effort to prevent drink driving.

Side effects of this will mean many missions will be impossible to complete in the Australian version, but at least it won't be sending a message to our citizens that it's A-OK to drink and drive...right?

I don't think drink driving would be something the OFLC would disallow, considering its something that features on your regular episode of Home and Away.

Not that I watch Home and Away...

Arrgh, slow down guys. Why do people always feel the need to cry foul and drop everything at the latest bit of completely unfounded speculation. That's all it is right now, speculation.

There has been NO confirmation that drink-driving has been pulled from the game so there's absolutely no reason for a kneejerk reaction. People who acted this way with the last apparent bombshell are probably regretting canceling their local preorder's right now thanks to the NZ debacle.

Keep a level head and just wait it out. There's still 2 weeks for someone to shed some light on this.

Regardless I'm not going to regret importing my copy of the UK for cheaper. Although a week's wait will be a bit of a pain in the ass.
