Rockstar comments on GTA IV edits

360 News | But still doesn't confirm which changes made.
After nearly a week of silence, Rockstar Games has released a media statement commenting on the cuts made to the Australian release of Grand Theft Auto IV. The full statement can be found below, but one notable omission from the statement, is the exact details of what content has been cut from Grand Theft Auto IV. The full statement provided by Rockstar Games is as follows

"The Australian version of Grand Theft Auto IV was rated by the OFLC in December 2007 as MA15+. Unlike the US and Europe, Australia still lacks an R18+ rating for video games and as a result many games are edited for release in Australia, including most previous Grand Theft Auto releases. While there are some minor differences between the Australian and US/EU versions, they are not significant and we do not believe they take away from the level of scope and detail that make GTA IV such an incredible experience. We would not release the game in Australia if we believed these differences compromised the quality of the game in any way. We strongly support the OLFC and will continue to work within their guidelines; however we believe the government needs to bring games in line with other media by introducing an R18+ rating, or edits to games will continue to be necessary. We encourage consumers to let their politicians know that they support an R18+ rating for games."

Rockstar cuts my game, I cut my purchase from Australia.

It may well be the governments fault, but I'm not going to pay more and get less no matter "how small" the cuts are it's too bad.

So what of this rumor that it is just one extreme cutscene cut?
Well here is the confirmation people have been waiting for (and dreading).

I will be placing my pre-order with a UK or New Zealand based online retailer tomorrow. Although there is a chance I won't get it on or just after release day due to a high volume of orders, it is better than paying $120 for a kiddy-safe censored version. I WILL NOT support censorship regardless of how minor the edits are, especially self censorship. Rockstar lied to us a few months ago when they said it would be uncensored, this has caused me to dramatically delay my overseas order and effectively increase my chances of not getting a copy from the earliest shipments.

Once again Australian retailers and the Australian industry miss out.

Good day.

Im getting my limited edition still.. cos i want it on xbox for the exclusive DLC. i may end up buying a PS3 US edition.. but im strapped for cash atm and will wait till i see it cheap/decide if its worth it or not.

PS, I have emailed the OFLC requesting the classification report for GTA IV. This should give us some incite as to what kind of content is in the game. i.e if you can pickup hookers in the game the report will say so, if not it won't.

Since Rockstar don't have the balls to tell us what has been edited......Ahh whats that saying? If you want shit done you gotta do it yourself.

Nice that they made a statement but still not happy that they won't tell us what was changed. If it was just a single cutscene I'm sure they would have no problems telling us about it. Something like that won't stop people from buying the game as we can just watch the offending scene on Youtube. Maybe Rockstar aren't saying anything so everyone gets pissed off at the Government for not having the R rating.

Hopefully the DLC doesn't come out for another 6 months or so. I'll just pickup a cheapish copy when it does get let out. In the meantime I'll just spend $75 on the PS3 version.

So are we sure that the NZ or UK version of GTAIV will work in aussie 360s?
I thought I read somewhere that they may not..
YES EU and NZ are PAL, same as Australia. Only NTSC MAY NOT work.
Dude for the millionth fucking time, there are only THREE regions in the video game world! PAL, NTSC & NTSC-J. Australia, UK, NZ and plenty of other countries are PAL, therefore yes it will work without a shadow of a doubt.

Could they region lock PS3 versions that are uncensored?

while yes, only one game i know of has been region restricted on ps3 ,so very doubtful

^And thought was region locked because the movie that came on the game's Blu-ray, was not rated in every country. I'm sure the PS3 version will be region free.

Personally, I don't care about the removal of something small (I know that things like drink driving have not been cut), and I'll be loving GTA4 on the 29th.

I cant remeber what site I saw it on but there was a list of features in GTA IV that were sensative and we being tested by the british classification board that they had on their website but quickly took it down. It was the same old stuff we're used to in GTA games.

I guess with games becoming more realistic the same old stuff becomes more offensive?

I'm disapointed that they still wont release the exact details of whats changed, which means being this close to release they're concearned that it could seriously effect sales in this region and if that is the case you really got to wonder what is missing...

I hope all this nonsense doesnt effect how I feel when playing the game when it hits our shores. The OFLC and developers not coming good on their promises have ruined the fun factor in games before and this is one game I wouldnt want that happening too.

It was this site (well this site had the story, it may have been carried on other sites too).

I would cancel my pre order but I am getting my copy nice and cheap. If it's dodgy enough I can just sell it and order it from overseas that said I'm not expecting to much to change, maybe just a few cutscnees a little blood that's all.

Which game?

\/ icon_confused.gif I have the US Stranglehold CE and use it on my AUS PS3.
While I question the quality of the package, it definitely works.
The movie has no fast forward/reverse and I found the gameplay frustrating when drinking while the story was boring when sober.
tbh I think I spent longer watching the film than playing the game. I enjoyed the film

^ Stranglehold.

Well that explains why the special edition maybe sold out...obviously the Australian package would contain the cut version of GTA IV, which cos it only 1 country, they wouldnt have made too many of them

I'm so tempted to switch my preorder deposit to MGS4... but I am worried about two things:

1) Not being able to play it day one icon_wink.gif
2) Whether importing will affect the online functionality(multiplayer or DLC)

Canceled my pre-order last night, which was nice because as it turns out I'd put more down on the pre-order than I'd thought... so it was almost like free money icon_smile.gif

Just swapped my preorder to Metal Gear Solid 4. Was thinking about buying the US version from PlayAsia, however any DLC that comes out on the OZ store would not work on it, but would on the PAL/UK version.
