Ikaruga hitting XBLA on Wednesday

360 News | There's also new content for Poker Smash, if you're interested.
It's been hinted at for a long time, but Microsoft has finally confirmed that Dreamcast and GameCube shooter Ikaruga will be appearing on Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday, April 9th.

If you've never heard of it, Ikaruga - from the boffins at Treasure - is a wacky vertical 2D shooter, heavily influenced by manga. Its claim to fame is a unique polarity system, where players must switch the polarity of their ship depending on the enemy in order to maximise damage. It's a tricky little thing to get the hang of, but there are massive high scores to be had. We reviewed the GameCube version way back in 2004, and thought that it was pretty good.

As usual, multiplayer over Xbox Live has been incorporated into the game, with both online and offline co-op options available. And, as you can see from the shots in the media panel, there has been some minor upgrades to the game's visuals. If you want it, it will set you back 800 Microsoft points.

Also coming to the Arcade on Wednesday are two new content packs for Poker Smash. The Environment Pack has a few new action mode environments, while the Puzzle Pack has a whole bunch of new, uh, puzzles. These ones will only cost 100 Microsoft points.

Co-op? Save replay function? Totally sweet. I know where my dollars (or points rather) are going tonight.

got ikaruga on the cube - easily one of the best vertical shooters ever made. the light/dark polarity switching adds an entire new level of strategy to the genre, elevating it well beyond the usual "learn patterns, dodge, shoot, repeat" **** (not that there's anything wrong with that). awesome visuals too, can't wait to see it in HD.

now, where can I buy a wall mount that pivots so I can twist my TV to portrait/vertical orientation with ease?

Not a huge fan of Ikaruga (or other Treasure games for that matter) and already own this on Cube but I wouldn't mind seeing what it looks like high def.

I'll be grabbing this one, missed out on the cube so it'll be cool to finally get a chance to play it.

Tried the demo last night. It was fun, but I don't think I'd ever get good enough make the most of it. It's one of those games I'd rather watch than play. Some of those vids on youtube make me scoff at the skill required, but damn are they impressive!
