Halo 3 Heroic Map Pack goes free

360 News | Log onto XBL tomorrow to get it free.
While we have all been busy scoffing our Easter eggs this weekend, the crew at Bungie has announced that they are giving Xbox 360 gamers something even better than chocolate - free Xbox Live content.

For those Halo players who haven't already scooped it up, tomorrow will see the Halo 3 Heroic Map Pack being snapped up for free.

The pack includes the maps Rat's Nest, Standoff and Foundry, and was originally only available for the tidy sum of 800 Microsoft Points when it debuted last December.

Bungie's Luke Smith reminds gamers that "as of the April playlist update, the Free Heroic Maps will be required in Ranked Big Team, Social Big Team, Team Slayer and Rocket Race playlists."

He reiterates that the inclusion of the maps to these playlists is "to give players more options with the map rotations and by including a high population playlist like Team Slayer, we hope that the maps will permeate through the Community, resulting in more games played on these maps in Matchmaking"

Awesome news, I might have to think about investing in Halo 3 again soon.

I hear MS crying for more people to play Halo3... Unlike CoD4, if people are playing Halo they are doing it on the xbox, whereas Call of Duty could be on any platform. I don't think MS feels too threatened by the PS3, but this seems to be a measure to maintain their userbase.

And, shamed as I am to say it, I shall probably answer the call. icon_razz.gif

Not for online MP, mind you, but my friends enjoy Halo3 splitscreen, so why not take advantage of a few more maps? icon_smile.gif

Except for you know... It was assumed from the beginning (like the Halo 2 maps) and maybe even announced then that this map pack was going to be free.

Yeah it was announced that the maps would become free eventually. I think that Bungie wants to make map packs free from the beginning, but M$ want to cash in a bit first, hence they charge in the beginning and then make them free.

They've done it sooner than the Halo 2 maps though. I think it was about six months before they became free. This time it's been just over three months.

I guess with the new map pack coming out, they want to show the love as much as possible... bless em!

Sorry, seems I didn't express myself properly. I'm not bagging MS or anything, and I know that the map pack was probably going to be free. I'm just saying the timing was convenient, and makes good business sense, from what I can see.

MS sees this as a good opportunity to increase Halo 3's online activity, and the timing is perfect as it strengthens the 360 userbase just prior to GTA4 coming out. I read an article today that intimated MS was scared that GTA4 could swing the console war in Sony's favor; I'm not inclined to give that article much credence, but it does make sense for MS to pick now more than ever as the time to keep 360 owners happy.

And happy I am, believe me icon_smile.gif My friends are gonna love these maps icon_biggrin.gif

The new pack comes out April 15.

yes from the very beginning they were going to be free before the legendary maps came out, most people actually thought it would be a week or so, but its like a month, so it kinda did comeout a bit early icon_rolleyes.gif

with so many more people with access to foundry, there are going to be some awesome maps

^Speaking of foundry, does anyone know what exactly the new capabilities are? I've had a look around, but my googling skills are obviously failing me, I seem to be searching for the wrong stuff :/

It's not free for me?...... still says 800 points!
Yeah, same here, both my friend and I looked and it was still listed as 800 points last night. May be its 25th US time?

Well it's free now I'm downloading it icon_smile.gif

to play, or to download...

I heard that Bungie or M$ had some kinda problem and so they weren't released at the right time, but they're up now...

A bit of patience = free maps for Nismo. Works for me, then.

Although whether I actually fire up the game to try them or not is another matter. I have to say, I'm quite over Halo's multiplayer these days and I haven't even tried Call of Duty 4 yet...

I cant believe some suckers actually paid $12 for some maps one month early. Theres like one good map.

I am confused, shall I get this or CoD4 maps?
I actually paid for the Heroic Map Pack only used it in a few custom games and thats it.

yer the heroic map pack was apparently a real let down. i
dont thnk anyone should waste the 700 megs of download limit on this.

The Legendary map pack is sounding better... especially Blackout... I always loved Lockout in Halo 2, and a direct remake would be fantastic.

I got the Heroic pack early and it was a bit disappointing. Foundary is a fantastic concept, but should have been included in the original release, not as an extra. As free maps though, they're fine.

My mates and I played our first game of Grifball last night and it was really good fun! Highly recommended to any who are looking for something a bit different.

Technically it is only a 470mb download Blink.
Gotta wait till next month though. I used all my usage.
