Valve hopes to keep TF2 content free for console users

360 News | Console owners still waiting on new maps.
In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Doug Lombardi, Vice President of Marketing at Valve Software, has reiterated Valve's stance on extra content for their games. In particular, Lombardi addressed Valve's intention to release extra maps for Team Fortress 2 as free downloads for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 owners.

Most importantly, Lombardi spoke of the new maps that have started to appear on the PC version of the game. "The maps will come to the console versions. There's a bit of work that makes sense for us to bundle them up and release them as packs."

When probed whether that still meant they would be released as free content, Lombardi said: "Oh, for free, definitely, as much as we can. You know, we don't have full say over that, but we have some say over how that works... the gamers play the game, they want to keep playing the game, so we've collected their fifty bucks at the start, and once they're in the park, they can ride any ride they want in the park. So, for us that's been the philosophy."

<3 Valve.

This is slightly off-topic, but there's an interesting chat with some Valve guys about how they came up with the Orange Box achievements.

They really do have us gamers in mind when they make games, their eyes aren't set on the big bucks, and for that they have my deep (yet manly) love.

I suspect that releasing stuff for PS3 for free isn't much of a problem, UT3 supports this (AFAIK) but no doubt MS see this as an opportunity to scab some more money off people who shouldn't have to pay (especially since they'd already be paying MS their live subs).

it'll be great if the psn store houses the extra content for free.
