Call of Duty 4 defeats Halo 3 online this week

360 News | Master Chief owned by Modern Warfare.
After the Xbox Live gaming charts have been repeatedly dominated by Microsoft titles including Halo 2, Gears of War and then Halo 3, Major Nelson has reported that one game has finally managed to break through the glass ceiling; and that game is Activision's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. It's the first non-MS game to top the Live charts, while Halo 3 had to settle for second place this week.

Here's how the rest of the chart looked:

    1: Call of Duty 4
    2: Halo 3
    3: Guitar Hero III
    4: Gears of War
    5: Rock Band
    6: Madden NFL 08
    7: Assassin's Creed
    8: Mass Effect
    9: FIFA 08
    10: Forza Motorsport 2

The Call of Duty franchise has always been extremely popular online, so it's no surprise that the latest version of the game with it's ridiculous amount of multiplayer modes has managed to get the most players for the week; it will be interesting to see if it remains more popular in the weeks to follow.

Thanks to mipac for the heads up.

As it damn well should be.

if only i could give you multiple +'s

how are Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect making it onto that list?
they don't have multiplayer components. (well, i know ME doesn't, and if AC does, i haven't found/unlocked it yet.)

^ I guess just cause they are damn good games.

And i'll take CoD4 over Halo3 anyday..

Perhaps the chart is just a list of the most popular games being played by users that are signed in to Live? But, if that was the case, it wouldn't be a true indication of which has more users actually playing the online component...

Hrmm, can anyone clear this up?

What have I done!?! Call of Duty 4 is on top. I shouldn't have stopped playing Halo 3, it's all my fault.

Oh well, all good things must come to an end.

These stats include every game that's played in an Xbox 360 while it's connected to Xbox Live, single player or multiplayer. It's hardly a proper indicator for most popular game as only 50%? of 360 players have Live and even then some people are like me and rarely connect to Live unless it's for multiplayer.

I'm on Live whenever I'm on Xbox. And in the last, 2 weeks, I have only played CoD4. Before that it was all Mass Effect and GH3.

Since getting the Xbox back online to make the most of my 30 Day Trial, I've only been playing Call of Duty 4 as well. Pity I suck. <_<

Hide in corners and just shoot them in the back.

And if all else fails, put on Matyrdom.

Martyrdom only really gets you when you are sloppy (and yes, it often gets me) icon_wink.gif
Halo 3 and COD4 are both good games though I do personally prefer COD4.
I do wonder which games have the potential to knock these 2 games off their perch for more than a few weeks?
I expect GTA4 to have limited MP and great SP, but Battlefield BC or Frontlines might... Hopefully R6Vegas 2 will have a good following too, and I think that Halo Wars and Endgame might even get a lot more ppl playing strategy games on 360.
