Undertow for free next week

360 News | Microsoft delivers on its promise of a free XBLA game
With Xbox Live suffering from several problems over the Xmas break, Microsoft recently announced that they would rectify the situation by giving all subscribers 'a free XBLA game'. They didn't announce what game it would be or when it would become available, only promising that more details would be given soon.

Well, details have come, and it turns out that the aquatic shooter, Undertow, is the free game that Microsoft has chosen to give to all Gold and Silver Xbox Live subscribers. It seems however, much like the recent freebie Carcassonne, that if you already own Undertow, there will be no free XBLA game available to you.

"Marc Whitten announced that all Xbox LIVE members (Gold and Silver) around the world would have access to a full Xbox LIVE Arcade game to download free of charge. We’re pleased to announce that beginning next Wednesday, 2:00 a.m. PST through Sunday, 11:59 p.m. PST, Xbox LIVE members worldwide can download the full version of the recent award-winning Xbox LIVE Arcade game, Undertow."

The game features a single player campaign as well as multiplayer co-operative and competitive play for up to 16 players over Xbox Live. Normally it costs 800 Microsoft Points, so hopefully Microsoft's apology will be accepted by those that couldn't get their gaming fix over the holidays.

obviously change the number for Au/UK members.

It's a shame the free aspect is time limited.

On the plus side it should have a large online player base after this. icon_wink.gif

I thought the demo was pretty good. It's the kind of game I'd want to play but would hesitate paying money for, so in other words, this is perfect!

Well this is a title I normally wouldn't have picked up but for free I cant complain

Sweet! This is one of the games I was going to buy next time I got myself some points - so works for me!

Hot damn. I almost bought that earlier in the week while I was suffering 'gaming depression'. Sucks for those who already own it.

Indeed it does suck. And just after I got someone to trade the online achievements with. icon_rolleyes.gif

True, I'm sure I've got the number somewhere, I've called Xbox support a few times now. I'll let you know how I go.

Edit;
After 20+ minutes on the phone to Xbox I got my 800 points back.

It's a pretty crappy game as far as XBLA goes, so not really.

They should have just given us 800 points or something. Then everyone would be happy.

I'm pretty happy with that.Afterall the downtime wasn't that bad i didn't think.

Well, I was away during the downtime, so no negaivity from me icon_smile.gif

At least they acknowledged that there WERE errors. Some companies don't even go that far.

Downtime didn't affect me either, so thanks anyway Microsoft. icon_smile.gif

Yeah, and at least it's a decent game there giving away for free. Not some crappy chump game.

I wasn’t really affect by the downtime so this great news for me and also for all Xbox owners with XBL. I was thinking about buying this game now that I have MS points, good thing I didn’t. But this game looks quite enjoyable

sounds like double Kudos is in order for Microsoft then.

1) giving compensation when they don't have to (show me where in the XBL agreement it says that XBL will never suffer errors or downtime.)
2) giving compensation to those who've already purchased the game.

good show.

So when do we get this? Its Wednesday and it's still costing 800 points.
Is Wednesday 2:00am really Thursday 2:00am? Because Wednesday 2:00am has come and gone.

Im downloading it now.

I was effected by the outages. I had to re-earn a gold medal I earned in PGR4 because I lost my connection at the end of an event. A mate of mine also couldnt sign up for Silver account.

I got my 450 achivements or something back just by connecting online and popping in Mass Effect. Hmm I will download this game tommorow and see how good it is.

Is there any way to like, 'reserve' this game since my Xbox is dead, or do I just miss out?
^ If you still have your hard drive you could download it at a mates place if they have a 360? I remember last Christmas I missed out on Mehrunes Razor or what ever it was called for Oblivion for free and that majorly sucked - so feel for ya icon_sad.gif

Been playing a bit of Undertow and I've been really enjoying it - the graphics are really good and the gameplay is great. If I had played the demo before this I would have purchased this title in a instant.

I downloaded it and played it last night. I have to say, it's quite fun, but I think it would be better if you could keep your upgrades in between stages for campaign mode at least.
