My main problem was that I got caught... on the side of the battlefield I guess, and he spammed his Arte so I couldn't move :\
Looking for a reccomendation for a DS RPG; Played and beaten Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 3, KH358/2 Days among others. WOuldn't mind grabbing a DQ or FF4, but more after something less mainstream.
so... indie... :P
also have a PSP - but got VC2 and Jeanne D'Arc to beat on that. :P

^ Some DS RPGs I recommend:
1. Dragon Quest V : I can't recommend this enough, if you play one DQ game, make it this one. It's one of the crown jewels of the JRPG genre. Even non-fans will enjoy it.
2. The World Ends With You: I bought the DS for this game. Easily the best pure DS RPG that makes full and intuitive use of touch controls.
3. Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer: A RPG that feels like a pickup and play arcade game. Great for short bursts of gaming, immensely replayable (mainly cuz you die alot in it )
4. Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey: Shin Megami needs to be experienced, and this one is a pure Shin Megami title. It's a really mature and compelling game, and extremely addictive thanks to some Pokemon-like elements.
5. Might and Magic Clash of Heoes: Fun and addictive puzzle RPG _________________

Good recommendations Jahanzeb
I would also add Suikoden Tierkress. A pretty good rpg overall with interesting story and exceptional music. Probably the best music you will hear on the DS.

PALGN really needs a multiquote feature >____>
@Jahanzeb:
Will probably pick up DQ5 and SMT:SJ pretty soon. Is Mystery Dungeon like the Pokemon ones? Didn't like those at all :s
TWEWY is one of the best games on the system, really regret selling it :\
Will give MightandMagic a look too, I vaguely remember someone talking about it :s
@Scrav is that like the Suikodens on PSX/1? :3

I think Mystery Dungeon is a Roguelike? So more of a dungeon/survivalist type game.
One thing to consider about the Might and Magic game, if you have a 360/PS3, it will also be coming out as an arcade/PSN game in 2011.
The Suikoden game has similarities to the traditional Suikoden games, such as collecting 108 stars, but it is set in a different game world focusing more on parallel universe.

Also:
- Atelier Annie
- Avalon Code
- Contact
- Disgaea
- Front Mission
- Hoshigami Remix
- Infinite Space
- Luminous Arc(s)
- Mario & Luigi
- Nostalgia
- SMT: Devil Survivor
- Super Robot Taisen: Original Generations Saga : Endless Frontier
- Summon Night: Twin Age
- Other stuff I am probably forgetting
I guess I cheat, some of those aren't too RPG-ey (in a traditional sense... I was even going to pad it out even more by throwing in Rube Factory ), but I'm guessing that list might last you a little while.
Edit: Also I guess that's more of a list that I can think of of games that I enjoyed playing, not necessarily anything to fit your RPG fix. Just kind of off the top of my head. _________________

Yeah, but is Shinren a rougelike in that when you die it's like olol restart dudebro, or more like the Pokemon versions in that you just get kicked out of the dungeon you're in? :3
Oh, awesome, will grab it on XBLA :D

Might grab the PSP ports of Disgaea in that case, admeister. :3
Played a little Avalon Code at a friends. Heard Contact was a bit lousy?
Need to get Infinite Space and the M&L's, as well as Nostalgia. I own the first Luminous Arc, will go back to it after Rune Factory. Thanks for the list though, it's given me some good ideas on what to get :D

Yea Mystery Dungeon is exactly like that, if that doesnt sound like something youd enjoy. Then I'd narrow my list down to Dagon Quest V and Strange Journey _________________

It's definitely a love it or hate it game. Graphics are lousy (minimalistic if you want to be nice) and controls are clunky but the story and general idea behind the game are more unusual and definitely 4th-wall breaking. Personally I was frustrated enough to sell the game on as quickly as possible but other people find it to be one of the more original experiences on the DS. The game lets you attack sheep, that's always a plus in a game.
If you want to give it a go it should be pretty cheap to pick up. If your local JB has it they should have it for around $10, it always seems to be one of those stickered "bargain" games.

I agree. DQ 5 is an amazing game, and, dare I say it, I think a lot of people might have been left with a sour taste in their mouth from the 4th game, so they skipped the 5th, which is a downright shame. Even though it's a fairly simple game, it is still a whole lot of fun, and the monsters joining your party is so random that you never really know what will offer its services to you, and it does a great job at being very touching.
Hmm, I don't know if I would recommend Suikoden myself. It seemed to be great in a number of ways but it also has a number of little niggles that added up and ticked me off way more than it should have.
Keep in mind that the Radiant Historia game is coming out soon for the DS, so there's something that you may want to look into. I'm sure it will be a good game, but it's hard to know in advance. I admit that I keep on forgetting about it, but hopefully now I'll remember it when I write out a list of potential purchases in the future.
Also, something weird, don't know if it's relevant:
Square Enix Preparing Final Fantasy Type-0?
| Siliconera wrote: | It appears Square Enix has another Final Fantasy spinoff in the works. By searching Europe’s trademark database, we discovered Final Fantasy Type-0.
In addition to a trademark for a potential title, Square Enix filed a logo for Type-0 with "type zero" written in kanji. Usually, Square Enix just files a title like Nier or Tactics Ogre. Since Square Enix registered a logo too, this is probably bigger.
Square Enix’s 1st production press conference is just a month away. Perhaps, we’ll see Final Fantasy Type-0 popup there. |

If it does get released here, I'd recommend it if you like JRPG's. It starts off fairly simple and cliche - guy with amnesia is forced out into the world and uncovers the truth about himself. The plot is pretty deep and it contains memorable protagonists and antagonists. There are a lot of twists and turns, some of which I guessed beforehand but quite a lot caught me completely off guard.
The story is quite dark and has some thought provoking and confronting moments. That said it's not perfect, I've talked it up a fair bit but it (like any game) is not going to win over everyone. Others may feel that the plot was too convoluted and I agree to an extent. There are times when a lot of stuff is dumped in your lap but I prefer this to a game where the plot is non-existent or might as well be.
The soundtrack is awesome too. |
Aha, it got mentioned. This really is a love-it-or-hate-it kind of game, but as for me, this is my absolute favorite RPG ever. No, not good enough... this is my absolute favorite RPG ever. Eh, still an understatement, but this will have to do.
I've never played any other RPG which had this much depth (but some will just call it philosophical crap) with a story spanning over more than 10000 years. So yeah, I won't go on about that, I really wouldn't know where to begin.
I think the main reasons why some people dislike it are;
- As I said above, the story gets quite philosophical
- Lengthy cutscenes; about the same as those in Metal Gear Solid, possibly longer. They're unskippable.
- Slow textbox dialogue; the text appears rather slowly and there's no option to speed it up. I've been told this was done to make things more realistic, making the text appear at the speed a real person would speak those lines.
- Combine those 2 points above and use them in front of some tough boss battles. Yeah, you lost? Sorry, you'll have to sit through the cutscene again and again until you win the battle.
- Jumping sequences. So, the game has several areas where you need to jump around a bit. But oops, if a battle starts loading (which has a 1-second delay) the jump button won't respond and you might just walk off a cliff. Fun, fun!
- There are also plenty of people who say "Disc 1 was awesome, but disc 2 sucked!" It's not the developers' fault their budget got cut and they had to stuff all the remaining disc 2 content into a "85% story - 15% gameplay" package. I can understand why people would quit the game on disc 2, but I was so hooked on the story by then that I really didn't care anymore.
The reasons why I love this game are simple;
- Favorite story (even Xenosaga, which is actually a reimagining of Xenogears, didn't even come close to touching Xenogears. I do like Xenosaga as well, though)
- Favorite soundtrack
- Favorite villain (probably not who you're thinking, most people dislike the villain I'm talking about)
- Citan rocks!
That's putting it a bit too simple, maybe, but yeah... I don't think I'll ever play another game like that ever again. I last replayed the game a few weeks before Christmas last year, so basically about a year ago. I also have a translation of Perfect Works (Xenogears' massive plot guide) sitting on my PC if I feel like researching some details about the story again.
It pains when I think about the fact that none of the 5 other episodes were ever released... *sniff*

Wow the character designs are just... wow.
I second Strange Journey. If you've played any SMT game before then you'll know what to expect with the demon fusion and the like. SJ is a proper game in the SMT series though so it's really fleshed out here and you can recruit demons you fight in the dungeon to become your party members. It's like Pokemon in a way. There's also a deep story with a lot of text so it's quite immersive but at it's heart it's really a first person dungeon crawler. Speaking of which, I'd highly recommend the Etrian Odyssey series too. It's very similar to SJ but it's more traditional and a tad harder.
I think Contact is a successor to the Earthbound/Mother series? I'm not really sure but I've had Contact for a long time and haven't even played it yet. It doesn't seem like a bad RPG based on reviews.
I enjoyed DQIV immensely, in fact it's probably in my top 10 RPG's on the DS. I've been trying to track down a new copy of DQV for ages but have had no luck at all. I wish I picked it up from Mightyape when it was $26

Well the fact that Xenogears was never released in Europe makes it unlikely that it will come to the EU PSN store....Looks like I'll have to "import" them like I did FF8/9. _________________

I second the love for DQIV, and having played V, I enjoyed both titles to a similar degree. You could always try running the gauntlet of eBay for DQV, otherwise you'll probably have to beg someone to steal... err... borrow their copy.
One Dragon Quest game that shouldn't be overlooked though is Rocket Slime (it also has the advantage of being readily available still). It's more an action game, somewhat Zelda-like, with some stupidly fun battles between giant tanks thrown in for good measure. And you still get all the bad punning and humour of a Dragon Quest game. It's a very fun, if somewhat easy game.

Yeah, I doubt they'll add it to the European PSN. The game does have a somewhat decent fanbase in some European countries (which surprises me a little), but not even Xenosaga made it to Europe. Well, except for Xenosaga II, the game they altered so much in an attempt to please the more mainstream RPG gamers too. And then it seems they figured; "now that we've changed it enough, we can introduce the series to Europe with this revamped 2nd episode!" Result: epic fail. XSII is now (in)famous for being the black sheep of the series and not surprisingly XSIII was again not released in Europe (to think they even bothered adding a bonus disc with all of XSI's cutscenes to XSII's PAL release, only to let all that effort go to waste).
*ahem* So yeah, slim chances of Xenogears making it to the European PSN.

That was the one of the worst decisions I've come across. It was like releasing only Matrix Reloaded. Even though they included a movie version of the first game (why not just include the game?) nothing made sense.

I'm not myself, but I have a friend whom is a fan and I remember the title purely for how ancient that game is. I'm fairly certain that was (or was very close to) a PS2 launch title?
| Xernova wrote: | | *ahem* So yeah, slim chances of Xenogears making it to the European PSN. |
I wouldn't say never. There's been some serious murmuring of US PSOne RPG releases making a move to the EU PSN soon. I've heard Parasite Eve in particular murmured, but a stretch to Xenogears wouldn't surprise me. _________________

There's actually a few SRT games available in English, there's two GBA games, as well as a fan translation of Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden on PS1. Alpha Gaiden is a pretty good game actually, I'm playing it now. _________________
