just finished Let the Right One In, which is the novel the film was based on.

there are some differences, but by and large, the film got it pretty good - well, the Swedish film anyway, i haven't seen the US remake - and the differences that are there don't really have much relevance to the story.

the only thing it did clear up though, was the scene where Oskar looked in to see Eli getting dressed.
i understand why they didn't include the explanation in the film, but it made *that shot* rather "wtf?" when they could've simply had him looking in, and that be it. i really don't understand the reasons for it's inclusion in the film.

the other differences mostly involved Hakan (Eli's "father"), but did also contain some more exposition on the bullies, as well as the police officer who made a presentation to Oskar's class at the very beginning of the film. (he's essentially the person investigating the murders.)

it does suffer the same kind of stuttery language that some other translations suffer from (specifically the Millenium trilogy - so perhaps it's a swedish translation issue...) but if you're a fan of the film, i recommend tracking down the book - it's very good.

I finished Ransom for English, I'd recommend it, even though the first 30 pages are grueling at best.

Also currently reading Fight Club for funsies, and Richard III for the opposite of that

Island by Alastair Macleod.

I must carry on (that or fail English), but I urge you, PALGN: save yourselves and don't read it.

The experience could be surprisingly closely emulated by having an old man wank all over your face while reminiscing about his childhood and muttering "THE BOAT", much in the same way that Samus would awkwardly mention "THE BABY" in Other M.

For the ultimate real experience, make sure that when he's finished up he rants about how the face-wankery was a deep display of his feelings for you. At this point, you can either make a bad pun about how in fact it was non-penetrative, or you can agree with him and and purchase the sequel.

No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy. Really excellent book, came before the film did. It has its own unique style, at first I was like "wtf? grammar fail", but it grows on you almost straight away. Probably one of the best books I've ever read.

After struggling with Naked Lunch but loving Ginsberg, i've moved onto Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer. I really loved Everything is Illuminated, plus he is married to Nicole Krauss (who is an amazing author), so i foresee good times ahead.

I'm reading Dracula at the moment. Didn't realise it was written in the form of compiled letters, journal entries and newspaper clippings. Makes for an interesting read.

I've got Strain next on my reading list by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan and I believe that it's the first in a trilogy. Again it's about vampires, but I doubt they'll glitter as Del Toro is on the job

After reading Carrie I started on Homicide by Ed Burns executive producer and head writer of the brilliant show The Wire (I'm watching it for the 4th time right now). The book is a recount of a year that Ed Burns spent with a few detectives from the Baltimore homicide squad. Following them around with arrests, bookings and everything in between.

I haven't read much but the book bears a striking resemblance to the atmosphere of the show (The Wire, not Homicide the show although that would be a given). A funny nod from the book is the recurring name Jay Landsman who was one of the detectives that Ed follows during his time with the homicide squad and the Sergeant in the homicide squad in The Wire (he portrays the Jay Landsman in the book). The real Jay Landsman is also recurring character on the show except he goes by the name of Dennis Mello.

I'm sure that reads horribly.

One of our thursdays is missing.

Kind of a little wary finding out that Thursday wasn't actually the protagonist of this one instead it's the fictional thursday from the books.

Still great story so far, full of the little things I love about Jasper Ffordes books, the fourth wall leaning meta stuff. Like the occasional typo from likes to licks when they're around a character who gets words mixed up and they're worried it might be infectious. Or the full page formatted to look MS DOS boot page on your computer when they have to reboot book world.

Loving it so far. If anyone hasn't read the Thursday next series you need to get your shit on that.

I'm reading Guns, Germs and Steel. Feels like a very important book but it's written like a philosophy essay and far to ponderous for my taste. Not sure I'll finish it as I have the basic idea already.

Currently reading The Hunt for Red October, it is pretty cool given the first Jack Ryan story I read was Executive Orders, not ideal but it does make every further book I read more of an "epilogue" if you will. It's quite an intriguing way to approach a series
