Having worked in retail I can vouch for the confusion between the DS line and the 3DS. A lot of consumers literally have no idea if it's something truly new or just a revision.

But, with that in mind, the price drop made a pretty significant difference I think. Prior to the price drop the confusion made it look like one model was significantly more expensive than the other. Now the difference is far less, and it's a lot easier to sell people on the idea.

When I explained it to customers I'd always use the analogy of "The 3DS is to the DS what the PS3 is to the PS2", explaining the stronger hardware, new features, and most importantly the software differences. A lot of people on the fence only need to be told that the DS is compatible with DS only games, meanwhile the 3DS is compatible with those and all new 3DS games, and they instantly feel the minor price difference is worth the investment for the sake of future proofing.

Wii U will confuse people for sure, but a lot of it comes down to marketing and not just the name. Nintendo did a fairly shitty job of communicating to the mass public that the 3DS was truly something new and different. Even if they go with the Wii U name, the key is in the advertising and marketing, and especially launch games, making a distinct separation of the old Wii and the new one.

They seriously need to fire the console naming guys. Wii U sounds just like an upgrade to the Wii and not a new console at all. I think trying to piggy back on the "Wii" brand will backfire for Nintendo.

I get so sick of finding 3DS games put back on the shelves with the DS games instead of the 3DS game shelves, drives me nuts how little attention people have.

Hope Wii U name change is legit and sensible.

You could transfer DSi>3DS and now 3DS>3DS.
I'd personally be surprised if you couldn't.
