capcom and the SOPA probbably doesn't, but a general SOPA topic would probbably get used.

Yes we should be worried, and Total Biscuit explains why quite well. This is worth a watch for anyone unaware of the implications of SOPA.

haha, reading that list of ESA members you posted Epic games was pretty much the only company on the list I gave half a shit about.

Looks like 38 studios and Trion have come out against it too.

Yes. Unlike other hilariously misguided US laws like the DMCA and the CDA, SOPA actually has international ramifications, due to the fact that it enables US-based credit card companies (i.e. all of them) to cut off funding to sites deemed "rogue" by the movie studios, without any judicial process.

Given what happened to Spanish website Rojadirecta last year, this is really bad for anyone who uses the internet. Of course, that's not the worst thing the US has done to Spain.

Right now, there are too many US politicians in the pockets of US corporations, and who are too willing to set laws that only benefit those corporations. US film studios are especially notorious for this behaviour in recent times.

As to what we here in Australia can do about it, the best thing you can do is to stop supporting US film studios: don't see movies at the cinema, and don't buy DVDs of US movies or TV series. It might seem like a small gesture, but if many of us start doing it (and start spreading the word among our friends and relatives) it's possible to send a message.

We can do the same with the video game publishers that support the bill, either directly or implicitly through their membership of the ESA. Don't buy video games from those companies.

You should also get onto as many of your US-based friends as you can and encourage them to get onto their congressmen/senators to explain to them why SOPA is such a hideous law.

Yeah that's gonna happen. This is pretty much asking the impossible, given about 80-90% of movies in most aussie cinemas come from Hollywood.

So should we extend that out to not buying US produced music? Video games?

I for one am not.

Pretty funny.

Boing Boing to go dark on January 18.

This is part of a greater movement, started by Reddit, of sites that will shut down for the day. You can find out more here.

Cory Doctorow wrote:
Even though a substantial portion of my living comes from the entertainment industry, I don't think that any amount of "piracy" justifies this kind of depraved indifference to the consequences of one's actions. Big Content haven't just declared war on Boing Boing and Reddit and the rest of the "fun" Internet: they've declared war on every person who uses the net to publicize police brutality, every oppressed person in the Arab Spring who used the net to organize protests and publicize the blood spilled by their oppressors, every abused kid who used the net to reveal her father as a brutalizer of children, every gay kid who used the net to discover that life is worth living despite the torment she's experiencing, every grassroots political campaigner who uses the net to make her community a better place -- as well as the scientists who collaborate online, the rescue workers who coordinate online, the makers who trade tips online, the people with rare diseases who support each other online, and the independent creators who use the Internet to earn their livings.

The contempt for human rights on display with SOPA and PIPA is more than foolish. Foolishness can be excused. It's more than greed. Greed is only to be expected. It is evil, and it must be fought.

So I've been reading a few articles on this. It sounds like the tide is turning against SOPA and PIPA now. The hearing got delayed until there is consensus. The White House issued a statement that seems fairly strongly worded against it, or at least limiting what it can do.

The internet may survive!

Most importantly, the DNS blocking provisions have been all but removed from the bill.

Here's a report on the White House's statement.

Wikipedia to join reddit's strike, will go dark on Wednesday.

That should make people sit up and take notice.
