So I thought I might copy the RPG thread and give Adventure games their own little haven to live in. Like the rpg topic, this is open to any adventure talk, news & announcements, collections and showing off and being awesome.
I do try to keep up with all the adventure news through a few sites, mainly AdventureGamers (awesome site), so hopefully if i'm not too lazy I can relay some of the news for people to read.
Everything from point and click to first person exploration to educational slideshows, the Adventure Game genre is I think one of the most unique genres out there and definitely needs some more attention.
I will start with some games I think are some fine examples of the genre.
1. Toonstruck
One of my favourites, cartoonist Drew Blanc (pun intended I imagine) is thrust into a toon world inhabited by some of his own creations. You have to save Cutopia from the evil plans of the main villain Count Nefarious.
2. Machinarium
Released in 2009 to critical acclaim, Machinarium is one of the most interesting games to hit the gaming scene in a long while. Everyone needs to play this.
3. Sam and Max: Hit the Road
Probably one of the most iconic games in the genre. The quality of the game is undeniable and the music, art, difficult puzzles and excellent writing make it one of the best you can play.
4. Twinsen's Odyssey
An adventure game with added action and platformer elements this game sometimes gets excluded from the genre. But to anyone who thinks that, I have one question for you: Shut up!
5. Beneath A Steel Sky
A futuristic adventure game set in a large, self sufficent city run by evil. Mixes mystery and dry british humour to create excellent atmosphere and one hell of a game.
6. & 7. Broken Sword 1 & 2

Some great games brought to us by the people who made classics like Lure of the Temptress and the aforementioned Beneath a Steel Sky. Both games involve murder/mystery plots that are some of the most captivating stories I can remember. And what's better is that the first has recently been re-released on wii and ds, so there are no excuses not to try one.
8. The Dig
A scientific group are sent to space to destroy an asteroid are instead teleported to a distant alien planet which they try to escape from. The seemingly deserted planet creates an intensely mysterious atmosphere, and with a story crafted in part by Steven Spielberg you know it's going to be good.
9. The Neverhood
A fully clay-mated adventure game with some hilarious puzzles and characters. A true classic that everyone should have a go at.
10. Maniac Mansion
As far as I can remember, the first Adventure Game I played as a child. A great game that can be passed a number of different ways depending on your chosen characters. Great music, great setting and interesting puzzles.
It'd be great if some of you adventure fans could join in with the topic, maybe show off some of your favourites. _________________

I've only played a handful of your list and not actually completed any but no Monkey Island in your top ten?! OMG
There's also the classic Sierra games: Police Quest, Space Quest and King's Quest (did I forget any series?)
More recently - I think TellTale are doing a good job at reviving the genre singlehandedly _________________

Yeah, there are a few things I would liked to have put in there, but then again it's not really a top 10, more of a GOOD 10 list. _________________

I did miss another great Sierra game - Leisure Suit Larry! They've driven it in to the ground lately but the original and its initial few sequels were hilarious.
Just thought of another great adventure game - can you guess it?

Can't say that i've played it (looked up the quote) but I currently have it coming in the mail. I've heard the name thrown around a lot, once the other week on Big Bang Theory, so I might have to give it a shot.

Never played that one either so I can't judge it, but it seems more like an rpg on first glance? It is welcome if you think it is an adventure. _________________

I love this genre! I am still spewing on the fact I missed out on the Machinarium pay whatever but that will be in my list of games soon. I'll list games that is significant to my love of point and clicks! Here is my short timeline
Beneath a Steel Sky
First game in the genre I played and finished. Found it many years ago in a PC magazine, I think it was PC Users. I had to start a new game many time because I totally stuffed up and didn't save properly.
5 days a Stranger
Found this in a PC magazine years ago too. Even when I played it years ago, I didn't know it was made by an Australian citizen, none other than a popular Aussie Video Game critic Yahtzee. Also, its free!!! [link]
Sam and Max Hit the Road
LONG TIME after BASS (Beneath a Steel Sky) and 5 days a Stranger, I picked up Sam and Max Hit the Road (last year in fact). This made me love this genre for ever and ever and ever. I got the LucasArts Classics bargain bin title but I played it on the SCUMMVM DS emulator and finished it during my spare time at uni.
Grim Fandango + Full Throttle
Because I loved Sam and Max Hit the Road, I hurried to the game store and picked up Grim Fandango and Full Throttle, sadly they ran out of Monkey Island. These games had help me love this genre even more!!!
Telltale Games
Sam and Max (currently on Season 3 ep 3)
Strongbad Season 1 (soon)
Monkey Island Season 1
I know I'm slow in gaming but when I heard Sam and Max Ep 4 was free, I played it even when my computer was laggy and I loved it! . In fact, I then got the full season and played it with a really bad lag, that was dedication, lol.
Re-release of classics point and click
Monkey Island 1
Monkey Island 2(playing in the future)
Broken Sword 1
Broken Sword 2-3-4 (playing in the future)
The Dig/Indiana Jones/Loom (Steam Adventure Pack, playing in the future)
I have Broken Sword 1 DS game to thanks for making me loving the series. Also, without the help of Digital Distribution, I wouldn't have gotten Broken Sword 2/3/4, Monkey Island 1/2 and more LucasArts Classics.
What I want to get in the future
The Longest Journey/Dreamfall
Machinarium
That's my point and click gaming history in a nutshell. I am hoping to play even more titles, classics and new in the future.

Awesome Thread, I used to own a copy of Neverhood... I think I sold it for $5 when I was a kid...... "GOD DAMN IT!!!!" Its like worth over $300 now haha
No The Longest Journey Love?
This is in my top 5 favourite games of all time, it tells just the most fascinating and complicated story.
It would be nice if funcom pulled their finger out and started working on the third game... _________________ http://bencadphotography.com/

Not sure if this counts as all the pics here are point and click games as far as I know.
Probably don't have enough time to put up any pics but Heart Of Dearkness is an awesome one. _________________ Welcome to the internet. Where any joke can turn into WWIII.

Why hasn't anyone mention Zack and Wiki : Quest for Barbaro's Treasure for the Wii or is that not good enough for this topic _________________ Currently Playing : Atelier Iris 2 (PS2), Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii), Legend of Heroes : Trails of the Sky (PSP), 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors (DS) and Final Fantasy XIII (PS3)

Haha yeah. It's not the original though, it's in one of those collections and is on a CD luckily.

Woah $5, dang, its worth about $70. The Neverhood is probably an uncommon game when it comes to adventures though, some are insanely rare and sought after. Some of the rarest are Alice: An Interactive Museum and Cosmology of Kyoto and I have yet to see a complete copy of either pop up on ebay for the past year.

I used to dabble in adventure games...
Little Big Adventure urgghhh...
Leisure Suit Larry 1, 5, 6 were AWESOME.
I'm gonna get Beneath a Steel Sky next - i've heard alot about it.
I have to say though I really don't like Phoenix Wright - i played without a FAQ (as I do most games) and oh my goodness this one time i was on a train and I was stuck and I must have been in the same spot clicking everything for 3 hours... the story is alright but geez it just goes on and on!!
This is one instance I prefer western games to japanese games! _________________

Also, what I feel belongs in that list;
Day of the Tentacle
Monkey Island (1 - 3, originals)
Grim Fandango
Indiana Jones
I don't play adventure games any more, but damn, the old ones were true classics.

So much win in this thread.
My personal favourites have already been mentioned: The Dig, Grim Fandango, Sam & Max, Day of the Tentacle.
I think it's great the genre's seeing a revival with Telltale Games, as well as the Sherlock Holmes series from Frogwares (the best entries of which are The Awakened and Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper). The Phoenix Wright games are more Graphic Novel, but the Investigations spin-offs are showing a trend towards making them more adventure game-like.
There are also some free Doctor Who adventure games being made by the BBC, with Charles Cecil (the man behind Broken Sword) producing. So far, they've been nothing special, and in fact incredibly easy. The latest game, or 'episode', was pretty terrible in that it took place in only two rooms, and had only about two puzzles from memory. _________________

Blade Runner was an awesome adventure game. All the good ones have already been mentioned so I'm not going to say them again.
The Tex Murphy franchise was also pretty good - especially the later ones w/ the FMV. Sure the acting was bad but I liked it. Bad Mojo was also an interesting take on the adventure game and the art style was pretty cool too. _________________

It seems everyoen has their favourites, and given how many different ones there are, it is not surprising. Here are some others I think deserve a mention.
Conquest of the Longbow: The Legend of Robin Hood
Goblins 1,2 & 3 and Woodruff and the Schnibble of Azimuth
Quest for Glory
Sanitarium
Gabriel Knight
Orion Burger
Both Phantasmagoria
Rhem
Freddy Pharkas
Indeed there are so many games that are excellent in the genre. If anyone thinks games deserve a mention, please let us know of them. _________________
