From the games I've actuyally played I list my GOTY as Skyward Sword and the runner up as Xenoblade. Having not played much at all of the other nominations I can't comment on any of them.

Eh, I say they're both guilty. Arkham City less so (another thing I'll go into later, specifically my enjoyment of the Riddler trophies), but there's no denying both have pointless filler content and running around. Arkham City is guilty on more than one occasion of *enter building, try to go forward, cant go forward for some reason, leave building, complete fetch/mini quest, re-enter building*, which is needless padding. As a whole though Skyward Sword's fetch quests are much worse.

Sure, there were staff departures and all, but I still find it surprising that the other game that got a 10 in 2011 didn't get a mention here.

Well Denny quit so I'm sure if he'd been doing one it would have made it.
Now I will never know if he will have mentioned LBP 2 as the biggest disappointment of 2011.

Well I've posted my thoughts in an earlier thread for user GOTY, but I've changed it slightly. If I had my picks on this it would've been.

Top 3:

Dark Souls: Undisputed king of the console generation and a beacon of hope for providing a rich and very challenging experience that's immensely replayable. I gave it a 10 for a reason and still hold to that very very strongly.

Witcher 2: The best Western RPG out there. Also, the best looking game out there.

Shogun 2: Immensely enjoyable game, very addictive and looks spectacular in panoramics.

Disappoint:

Battlefield 3: One of my reasons for upgrading was a terrible, terrible mess of a game imo. It is technically monolithic, but its gameplay just isn't..fun. Also, technical issues ahoy! I can't play competitive if a game gives me shitty netcode. Back to Quake for me.

Surprise:

Skyrim: Really amazing title, but I don't think it deserves GOTY. Has a lot of technical/game breaking issues on both PC and console which hold it back from being ultimate levels of God-tier, but nonetheless it was a spectacular title that I didn't expect to be that great, as I'm one of those Morrowind dudes that hated Oblivion because ctrl+C ctrl+V isn't my thing.

Honorable mentions:

Killzone 3 for awesome blockbuster FPS gaming + HOLY SHIT levels of visuals (best looking console game ever imo, the technical side is retarded in complexity).

Space Pirates and Zombies for being $5 and sapping 20 hours of life in a day or two because it's so awesome.

Crysis 2 for an enjoyable romp, even if I was very burnt by its lack of ambition and it being very dull as opposed to Crysis 1's spectacular vision and destruction.

Deus Ex because conspiracies.

And finally Quake Live. Because 10 years of playing you and I'm still not bored.

EDIT: oh yeah and that Serious Sam 3 game was pretty sick.

I'll grant you that Arkham City is occasionally guilty of sending you around the map to fetch items, etc, but I think Rocksteady does an admirable job of contextualising these tasks and making them somewhat organic to the story. Most of these instances require Batman to go and collect an upgrade for his suit, or disable signal blockers (?) or whatever; while most gamers can see these tasks as a bit of 'padding', I don't think I really mind, given that I never really feel like I'm just treading water for the sake of game length.

With Zelda, I felt like I could see Nintendo straining and heaving to lengthen their game and justify their otherwise-empty environments by filling them with 'tear'-collecting and other nonsense.

I don't mind a 'fetch quest', but the developer had better do its best to at least try and disguise the fact that its sending you on an errand.

Frozencry I think I love you..... I very much like bf3 but share the 'disappointment'. And speaking of indie titles as space pirates and zombies, I think there really needs to be an Indie game of the year. The developers spend so much of themselves to make these <$20 dollar games and honestly they compete extremely well for time till bored. Its a shame dungeon defenders couldn't get 50 million development budget and 150 million advertising budget (because everyone seems to be such a pain, those figures are completely made up and I'm just making fun of MW3 for being MW 1.02)

As i side note I'm glad none mentioned MW3 for GOTY even though it is the highest selling game of all time, unlike when the Sims reigned godlike status. Stats don't mean anything icon_biggrin.gif

Those are ones I completely disagree with, actually. Pretty much everything involving that goddamn robot was pointless, but I loved the tear collecting and it is, in my opinion, the first time 3D Zelda games have gotten 'stealth' sections right, given I hated tear collecting in Twilight Princess, and the fortress sections of Wind Waker and Ocarina of Time.

2011 was a wicked year in gaming, so many top tier titles. 2012 has a lot to live up to, and with the titles scheduled for release this year it's looking like another big one.

I am still only halfway through playing enough of the games of 2011 to have an honest, complete list. I picked up Batman, SR3, Dead Island and Driver SF in the Steam sale and I can safely say that Saints Row 3 is probably the most fun game I played all year securing it in my top 5 and Dead Island RULES.

What a year. Seriously.

Couldn't stand the thing.

It wasn't even on. That's how terrible it is.

Also, he walked past a 3DS box in a store and it gave him a migraine and made his bowels evacuate.

Actually it was the E3 presentation last year, seeing the picture of it on the screen made my heart stop for a minute and a half and I needed CPR.

It was on, playing Street Fighter 4.

** THREAD HIJACK **

Re: 3ds - it was time. I got it the week before the price drop at the price drop price. I wanted pilot wings having enjoyed the n64 version. The 10 GBA ambassador games were the deal sealer. UK imports/EB sales = good value. My current collection: Mario 3d land, Skylanders, Rayman, Rabbids, Pirates Caribbean, Spilinter Cell, Ghost Recon Dead Alive, Ocarina of TIme and Tales of the Abyss. 11 "good" games and thanks to sales the average price for these was maybe $35 each.

The ONLY problem I have with it is region locking. Devil Surivior 3ds is a wish list item. When the (inevitable) 3D-dual stick-S is released I'll import a US version to overcome this.

** ON TOPIC ** - Maybe mario is the only 3ds title that is a potential GOTY contender, but overall the 3ds is good value....

The 3DS smashes the hand held market but aside from super mario lacks those 8+ out of 10 games that are needed to sell a console. I bought a 3ds pretty much so i could play pokemon without charging my DS every 2 hours... I got the US version as well as i knew eventually region locking would mess me up and new releases are like 45 dollars on my door step in 2-4 days.

The problem with the 3DS at the moment, especially when talking GOTY, is that there's nothing remotely original on it. The biggest games on there are either remakes (OoT) or have been done half a dozen times before (Super Mario 3D land and Mario Kart 7) without really changing the formula. Sure, they're still fun to play, but I'd like something with at least a bit of originality to be game of the year.

Agreed. But original can be a tricky term in gaming. I'd call a game like Demons Souls original but is it? Is a stale RPG with a new never before seen battle system more original?

Maybe 3DS GOTY 2012 will be Layton vs Wright icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif I can only hope.

Yes? I don't think any game has ever handled multiplayer in the way Souls did.
