A cheap imitation of this thread, just as with the Xbox so too is the GameCube ten years old.
Ten years of shitty third party support, software droughts, and purple handbags. And it was awesome.

10 points for whoever can name all those games.
Although I don't see any love for Tales of Symphonia or Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance up there. _________________ Currently Playing : Atelier Iris 2 (PS2), Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii), Legend of Heroes : Trails of the Sky (PSP), 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors (DS) and Final Fantasy XIII (PS3)

Absolutely loved the Gamecube, it was my favourite console at the time. So many good games, it was severely underrated, half the people I talked to hated it without playing it.

Yeah Gamecube was a very very good console and at the time I loved it to death. I wanted it to cream the PS2 and Xbox at the time. Seeing it die was painful to watch. Kind of like the 3DS.... _________________ Shin J Leon.

Still have a list of games I've been meaning to find and play eventually (along with my other backlogs) of the following:
Killer 7
WaveRace : Blue Storm
Lost Kingdoms 1/2
P.N.03
Baten Kaitos/BK Origins
Skies of Arcadia
Luigi's Mansion
Looking back though, there a somewhat sizable amount of good->great games, which unfortunately, were extremely limited in run

The GameCube was amazing.
I bought the console solely for Super Smash Bros. Melee. I had five good mates who all owned it, and we had been playing together for a few months, but it was getting to that point where I needed to practice at home so I could keep up with them. I can't even begin to imagine how many hours I put into that game, we literally spent entire weekends having tournaments and were still playing regularly right up until Super Smash Bros. Brawl was released.
~
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker was one of the next games I picked up for the system. I loved pretty much everything about the game; the cel shaded art style, the sense of exploration - I was probably one of the few people who actually liked the sailing in the game.
I think the story was also the strongest of the series. It had twists I didn't expect and characters that I actually grew to care about. I especially liked Ganondorf's story in Wind Waker, and come on, his katanas were fucking awesome.
While nostalgia does not allow Wind Waker to overthrow Ocarina of Time as my favourite Zelda game, it definitely secures the number two position.
~
Then there was Metroid Prime. Exploring Tallon IV remains the most memorable and atmospheric experience I have ever had in a video game. The world truly felt alive and was littered with so much history to uncover. The game also managed to convey an absolute sense of solitude; I was completely alone throughout the adventure and it allowed me to relate to Samus and walk in her shoes.
I still remember how I felt the first time I wandered into the Phenandra Drifts and was blown away by the scope and the beauty of the area. Or when the power went out after acquiring the Thermal Visor in the Research Core and Space Pirates appeared and started attacking me out of nowhere. Perfection is truly an understatement for Metroid Prime and it remains my favourite video game of all time.
~
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem is another GameCube game that resides in my top ten of all time. It is also one of the most unique games I have ever played. It had an engrossing story and I loved how everything started to come together as you played through each characters' chapter.
The combat was intense, with a variety of spells and physical weapons to use. The main draw of the game, however, was the sanity system. When the character you were playing as would come across a monster, their sanity would decrease and various effects would begin to occur. The sanity effects were unbelievable. The world would distort, the walls would bleed and I remember how creeped out I was the first time I noticed the statue of the head that would turn to watch you as you passed it in the hall.
I'm still hoping for a sequel, which has been rumoured for years.
~
There was so many other high quality games. Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes was my introduction to the Metal Gear series, and made me fall in love with the franchise. The remake of the original Resident Evil is probably THE scariest game I have ever played. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance was fantastic, although I still think the 2D sprites from Game Boy Advance games is a much better look for the series. Paper Mario, Battalion Wars, Pikmin, killer7 and Luigi's Mansion were also amazing.
The Gamecube was also THE multiplayer console of choice. I've already mentioned how much time I spent with Super Smash Bros. Melee, but there was also F-Zero GX and TimeSplitters 2, which kept my friends and I entertained for years.
~
There are still a few GameCube games that I'm yet to play, most notably the big RPG's of the system, Tales of Symphonia and Skies of Arcadia. It's good to know that I still have some of the systems best games left to enjoy! _________________

I still have my spice orange Gamecube packed away some where. I loved my Gamecube, had some really awesome titles that I couldn't part with.
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 2 - This made me want a Gamecube, when I first played this in a videogame store when I was holidaying in Hong Kong, I simply had to have it.
PN03 - Loved the Vanessa character design and the game was quite unique, with the whole dancing and shooting thing well ok not so much dancing more like hip gyrating. I kinda really hoped that this series would continue.
MGS: Twin Snakes - loved it back on the PS One days and had to play the remake with updated graphics, re-done voices and the cut scenes that was done by one of my favourite directors (Ryuhei Kitamura) was a must buy.
Resident Evil - the series shifting to the Gamecube, Zero, Remake and Four. Love the series and the Gamecube I thought really bought more life to it with the gorgeous graphics at the time.
Then of course you had all the awesome Nintendo IPs, Super Mario Sunshine, Wave Racer, Winder Waker, Metroid Prime, F-Zero, etc. _________________

Oh Benza, you lovable troll.
Gamecube didn't have the biggest amount of games, but definitely had the BEST games of that generation. Quality over quantity. _________________

It was fine if all you cared about was the Nintendo Exclusive titles.
And yeah they were pretty great. shame my faviourte series of the last gen was Prince of Persia though, try find the first or third one for gamecube, fucking impossible. Even the day of release there were only like 2 copies of PoP 3 on the cube in the entire CBD. That shit is fucking absurd.
It was the gen that really cemented that
A: Nintendo didn't give a shit about releasing games for the Australian audience
and
B: Nintendo didn't give a shit about giving their fans a chance to play any non exclusive games. _________________

Yeah I totally agree with you on points A and B. I bought an NTSC Cube as well, even though that cost me around $200 I reckon I still came out on top by importing games. _________________

I have all three Prince of Persia games on the Gamecube, PAL format. I didn't even realise the third one was released in Australia until a workmate was selling it second hand.
Terrible support, but strongest library. WTG Nintendo. _________________

Random game trivia: Sands of Time was ported to the GameCube in it's entirety by only one guy, because UbiSoft didn't want to invest in a full team. _________________

Yeah I ended up getting all three after much scrounging around in the second hand bins. I've still never managed to find a copy of Beyond Good and Evil for it, so am stuck with a PC copy that hates my Nividia video card and won't render water propperly.
I remember the precise moment when I gave up on Nintendo was the release for Second Sight, in retrospect a nothing in gaming history. (For those that don't remember it, a game made by the devs behind Time Splitters, third person shooter about a guy with psycic powers) and I was fucking pumped for it. Loved time splitters 2 and was rabbid for the chance to play anything else by them, confirmed online it was deffintly going to be released on cube in Aus, saved up my money, release day and fucking zip. There were about 20 copies ready to go on the PS2 shelves another 10 for X-box, nothing for cube. In any store.
I mean hell, even looking through peoples faviourte games lists.
I have never seen a copy of PN:03 in my life. MGS: Twin Snakes I only managed to score by finding a second hand european copy in Game traders by complete fluke. Killer 7 barley exists, Skys of Arcadia is another game I've never seen a physical copy of.
I mean you can have all the fucking amazing games in the world but that means jack shit if no one is able to actually buy the games and play them. _________________

Is it up to Nintendo to release third party games though? And come on, it's not like we can't just order from the UK. Is/was it that much of a pain? _________________

Nintendo are partially responsible for shit like that, but given Codemasters were the publisher it ultimately would have been their call (though Nintendo could have tried to step in) not to publish in Australia. There was a PAL release of Second Sight, but you had to import to get it.
The missed third party localisations were probably result of the GCN bombing in Australia. It's Nintendo's worst selling home console and did pretty terribly here, and a lot of third parties probably felt there was no point investing in shipping to a small market. Hell, the GCN and original DS sales were (as far as I'm aware) what caused Harvey Norman to go on their whole "we wont stock Nintendo products" vendetta. _________________

For a kid in high school that's parents wouldn't let them use their credit card online. Yeah it was that much of a pain.
And it's not so much up to Nintendo to release third party games, more the fact that it was a major problem with the console. (Although I'd say that Nintendo's relationship with third party companies might have had something to do with it) _________________
