How much will you pay?

I've noticed that the price of games in Australia has been a bit of a hot topic in recent times. I'd like to take a step back and ask a more general question regarding value. How much are you willing to pay for a new release game that you want? What are they worth to you? This includes both retail and online stores inside and outside Australia. Do you have a set limit, or decide on a game by game basis? I've added a poll to this thread so that we can get an idea of just how much the average gamer will spend.

Personally, I refuse to pay more than $60 for a new release game. That is my limit. Any more than that, and I feel that it's too expensive. I've only made one exception to that rule this year, which was for Uncharted 3 (I payEd $68). That's only because it's Uncharted though, I know it'll be worth every cent.

Edit: Sorry, I meant to add an $80-$90 option. If you would have voted for that, let your voice be heard in the thread.

$60 is my absolute limit unless it's a special edition that I really want. This means that I never buy games in Australia unless they're been marked down considerably. You can get two or even three brand new releases from the UK for the price of one new release game in Australia. It's annoying having to wait for games in the post but in the end I think it's more than worth it.

I want to support the local retailers but until they stop ripping off the customers (it's not entirely their fault though), it's not gonna happen.

Being a predominantly pc based gamer these days I usually buy all my games via digital methods such as steam and key selling websites. I paid $56 for bf3 limited edition, got to play it 3 days before it came out in AUS and had it within 30min of buying ready to go.

That being said, $56 for me was pretty darn steep considering in the past 3 months I bought deus ex HR limited ed for $45, legit us key; warhammer space marines for $36 something, legit us key; and a few more. The last game I bought a physical copy for was dead island, but that was because it came also with the turtle beach headset which I was looking at getting anyway.

Games these days fall in value so quickly, unless its something like gt5 and call of duty which actually help their value pretty darn well, imo there is no point in paying top dollar even though many bricks and mortar stores are doing new release games ~ $79-89 and a bit less for pc these days for console.

That being said, I can understand digital downloads isnt really an option for many people who do not have a crazy download limit or just like having game boxes sitting on the shelf.

For PC games, usually $50 or $60, as it's easily gotten at that price for a digital download. But for a console game, up to $110 I guess. Usually I try to only pay $80 or $90, but I paid $110 for Battlefield 3, cause $20 isn't all that much more. If I want a game, I'll pretty much pay whatever price I have to.

I'm an absolute sucker and will pay ridiculous amounts for stupid inane shiny stuff.

I think 120 was the most I ever payed for a game and then I felt ripped off and traded it in and bought two games for the price. (It was fallout 3, got PoP and Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts instead, much better deal IMO)

For just a regular new release, I'd easily go $100 if I wanted it. The last time I did that was for the AU PAL release of Xenoblade. For collector's editions, substantially more than that, again if it's something I really wanted.

I don't really have a lot of interests outside games that are a real financial drain (having a car is my only real expense), so I have a bit of leeway with disposable income. In the past when I wasn't working or living from pay to pay, I'd just forgo new releases altogether.

I pretty much only buy new releases from the UK now, so I guess $60-$70 is the highest I'd go. For handheld software it's probably $40-$50.

If i buy locally in store, my ideal price is $79.... but i will pay $89 if i am desperate enough.

If i am happy to wait for a physical copy purchased online, i will pay up to $60, or $70 depending on the site and method of delivery (usually only pay up to $70 if/when i order from play-asia and use fed ex delivery).

Digitally i will pay up to $50 for a title, again depending on how desperate i am.... i could pay more. I purchased Fifa 12, NBA 2K12 for a few dollars more than i initially wanted to..... but i'm happily playing them .

I am laughing - having purchased the pc version of Sonic Generations for a fraction under $30, when Steam wanted $49.95. And the game is being sold for $79 - $99 in various retail stores.

I'll pay just about anything for a special edition that I really want or if I want something day 1 (though try to stick to about $80 for a vanilla version).

To be honest, if I can wait a few weeks for a brand new game from the UK, I find I can generally wait until the game falls under the $30-$40 mark before I invest, which is what I do for probably 70% of the games I buy.

Ya know now that I think about it, I don't really shop around. I buy all my games from the Game in capalaba because they have really fucking top customer service. And yeah I guess I'm prepared to pay a little more for that.

As far as digital distribution goes, I'm paying no more than $50 AUD for a AAA title (and hence, I hardly buy DD). For games online, I try to buy AU versions as long as there is a saving after postage (and the wait time isnt long).

For a new release on a console I won't pay much more than $50, and I'll only pay that much if I think it's going to sell out pretty fast and get really hard to find. Otherwise I wait until there's a sale or price drop. Handhelds my max is probably $30-35, which is around RRP for most handheld games in the US. There's a reason I import almost everything

If I like the game (whether it be new release or something old), then there is no real price I won't pay.

I am however more dictated by the collectability of a game and am willing to shell out more on a game if it happens to be a collector's edition or has a limited number run.

The most I've paid for a single game is $1200 and the thought has crossed my mind to offload that same price two more times, but I've had to hold back...*cough* girlfriend *cough*

Well seeing as there is stuff all places to buy games here and I am impatient and don't like having to wait for ordered games to get here, I happily pay up to $120 for PS3 games.


PSN games are different.For some reason I don't usually like to pay any more than about $16 for a game.

It depends on the game.

If the game is a downloadable, I resent paying more than $10, unless it's on iOS, then I will pay only $3.

As for full retail games, unless it's a "must have day 1" game (this year there has been only a couple: Portal 2 and Uncharted 3) then $65. For "must have day 1" games, it's more like $80. However, if I have received a gift card for my birthday/Xmas I'm willing to pay a bit more, using said gift card.

If the game is more than a couple months old, I won't pay over $40.

I guess mine would be $40-$59 for handheld or $50-$68 for home console games. I purchase most of my games from UK/US but I will get it locally if the game is my favorite game or they offer preorder bonus that I really wants to have.

Anyway, I still prefer to import game from UK/US. Recently, I purchased Deus Ex (PS3) that only cost me £16.94 so it's around $26 in Australian Dollar. If I had purchased it locally then it would have cost me around $68-$88.
