I have an idea.
It's a rather multi-faceted idea, and I've decided the best way to implement it is via the use of MediaWiki software.
Unfortunately, my technical expertise doesn't really extend that far and, as with a lot of free back-end software, the website seems to be designed only for people who know what they're doing.
What I want to do is edit my own private MediaWiki site offline, with the eventual plan of uploading it to a third-party host for online distribution.
First thing's first, how do I get the MediaWiki software running on my PC? Is it as simple as downloading and installing it? _________________ My Photos

MediaWiki is a webapp that runs on top of a webserver, with PHP support and a database. You need those three things before you install MediaWiki. If you want to keep it private - depending on how your network is set up - it may be private by default or you may need a firewall to block incoming connections.
Here's their official install guide - with the detailed installation and configuration pages too.
If you want a straightforward Windows guide, have a look here
If you want to give Linux a try, Ubuntu makes installing it pretty easy.
For migrating to a public server later? I think exporting your configuration files and the database - then re-importing it to the webhost should be enough. You may need to make sure the database and MediaWiki versions are consistent between your setup and the webhost's though. _________________

Sounds like it might be simpler to just host the whole thing on the Internet from the start. Thanks Grim _________________ My Photos
