I have an idea.

It's a rather multi-faceted idea, and I've decided the best way to implement it is via the use of MediaWiki software.

Unfortunately, my technical expertise doesn't really extend that far and, as with a lot of free back-end software, the website seems to be designed only for people who know what they're doing.

What I want to do is edit my own private MediaWiki site offline, with the eventual plan of uploading it to a third-party host for online distribution.

First thing's first, how do I get the MediaWiki software running on my PC? Is it as simple as downloading and installing it?

MediaWiki is a webapp that runs on top of a webserver, with PHP support and a database. You need those three things before you install MediaWiki. If you want to keep it private - depending on how your network is set up - it may be private by default or you may need a firewall to block incoming connections.

Here's their official install guide - with the detailed installation and configuration pages too.

If you want a straightforward Windows guide, have a look here

If you want to give Linux a try, Ubuntu makes installing it pretty easy.

For migrating to a public server later? I think exporting your configuration files and the database - then re-importing it to the webhost should be enough. You may need to make sure the database and MediaWiki versions are consistent between your setup and the webhost's though.

Sounds like it might be simpler to just host the whole thing on the Internet from the start. Thanks Grim
